mrmondo··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2018)
Infoxchange | Melbourne | Systems Operations Engineer + Systems Operations Lead | Onsite | Full-time

We're a non-profit that develops and hosts a decent number of web applications that are used heavily throughout Australia by other NFPs, NGOs, Government Departments and communities.

Modern Ops Team that works closely with developers, we automate all-the-things and CI/CD everything we possibly can, very rewarding work with a team that's been long engaged in the DevOps scene. If you're in Melbourne - you've probably seen us talking at local meetups more than a few times.

mrmondo··on Show HN: Deploy a Go Lambda to Ping a Site in 20 Seconds
Much nicer example I think and no AWS tax / lock-in.
mrmondo··on Ask HN: I'm writing a book about white-collar drug use, including tech sector
I can answer any questions you have around Modafinil and Armodafinil over a 4~ year period. If that’s of interest to you free to contact me via DM on twitter - @s_mcleod
mrmondo··on Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+
How did Samsung it was a good idea to round the glass edges of a screen to the point that it warps displays colour & creates glare from indirect light?

It looks to be as big of a problem as on their 8 which I’ve observed people experience frustration with.

mrmondo··on Signal Foundation
I’m really hoping OMEMO makes it into Openfire (XMPP Server) and Adium (XMPP Client) sooner rather than later, we current use OTR but OMEMO is objectively superior in every way I can see.
mrmondo··on BPF comes to firewalls
Really please to see BPF making further progress, well done and thank you to those involved in the implementation, testing and review process across the various projects involved.
mrmondo··on A 1700-ton telco building that was relocated while running in 1950
That somehow makes it even more special in my mind.
mrmondo··on Ask HN: What has HN given you?
1) News of new and potentially disruptive products and ideas.

2) The opportunity to read to insightful comments rather than always being sucked into flame wars. It’s not always the case but it’s more pro-constructive feedback and commentary than reddit, forums etc...

mrmondo··on A 1700-ton telco building that was relocated while running in 1950
Did you know about the story / history behind the building before visiting the area?
mrmondo··on A 1700-ton telco building that was relocated while running in 1950
Faninating story, I first heard of it while listening to the latter part of linked 99% Invisible podcast episode.

There’s some information on Jorge Matute Remus the engineer who designed and ran the building move on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jorge_Matute_Remus

mrmondo··on Intel Expands Bug Bounty Program
Yeah I wondered that too, probably comes out of a different budget so they can manipulate their finances to manage their perception. It also stinks of trying to appear socially responsible with a hint of ‘not our problem’.

What ever happens to those (alleged) ex-intel security / testing employees who left or were laid off as Intel management pushed for sales over stability?

mrmondo··on MPEG-2 Patents Have Expired
My god, that website is dreadful, not just poor / dated design but no TLS/HTTPS with a login form!

It's Sharepoint... and it looks to be proudly developed by https://sharepointexperience.com

mrmondo··on Email is your electronic memory
As always Bron & teams - so happy with your take on this and proud to be a Fastmail user and advocate.

-Sam.

mrmondo··on 3D Color Print
Very neat idea - but trust HP to incorporate a disposable, proprietary ink system with a product like this.

Reminds me of the infographic comparing the cost of HP's black ink to other liquids, the next most expensive shown (at half the price of the HP black ink) was human blood: https://thumbnails-visually.netdna-ssl.com/ink-costs-more-th...

mrmondo··on Meltdown-Spectre: Malware is already being tested by attackers
Not replacing them, but MFA and good identity management is a start.
mrmondo··on Daily Facebook users drops for the first time in US
I moved my account to Ireland (in a somewhat improperly researched attempt to force them to delete my data due to Ireland’s data retention laws), waited a month or so then scripted deletion of all the images and posts on the account, changed all details and disconnected it from everyone and everything, then waited a week or so ‘deleted’ the account.

That was about 5 years ago (and it was a great life decision IMO) but - people say they still see me popping up on their feeds with my (fake) birthdate, memories (which I was untagged or had privacy settings disallowing me to be tagged in) and other weird things.

I’ve been careful not to mistakenly log in once which I fear my bring the account back from the dead and I’ve also kept an eye to make sure there’s no identity theft / fake account going on.

I don’t trust that company one bit, I’m glad I left but I don’t for one second believe my data’s actually been deleted.

While I truly hope something open source and decentralised gets momentum, I still truly love twitter - I get a lot out of it and I’ve met and networked with a lot of great people through Twitter.

mrmondo··on Google Cloud Platform Opens Region in the Netherlands
Part of me really wants this to be called the nether region... </joke>
mrmondo··on Gemnasium acquired by GitLab, the future of version control is built-in security
Congrats to both GitLab and Gemnasium teams, both truly fantastic products I’m very proud to use!
mrmondo··on Microsoft disables Spectre mitigations as Intel’s patches cause instability
FWIW - I took it as a somewhat rude reply but hey it’s the internet so no big deal.
mrmondo··on Microsoft disables Spectre mitigations as Intel’s patches cause instability
I did not, and do not lay any blame, I only provided context to the prior comment.
mrmondo··on All Your IOPS Are Belong to Us: Case Study in Performance Optimization (2015) [pdf]
This was my first thought, kernel 3.x is more than a little dated now and there is a huge amount of IO performance and latency related changes that have been incorporated since the 3.x days.
mrmondo··on Microsoft disables Spectre mitigations as Intel’s patches cause instability
FYI - The “dude” from Amazon worked for Intel for 8 years before joining Amazon UK just over a year ago.
mrmondo··on Linux Kernel 4.15 Released
Nice also to see:

  You can do
  cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/spectre_v2
and if you don't have a compiler that supports the retpoline mitigations, you'll get:
  Vulnerable: Minimal generic ASM retpoline
because only the assembly code (not the C code) will have the retpoline mitigation. So keep that in mind.
mrmondo··on Boring Flamethrower
Musk: “I know it’s a little off-brand, but the kids will love it”, this guy never ceases to crack me up!
mrmondo··on If you multitask, so will your team
While I agree if the meeting is important - often one can’t help but be dragged to meetings that are run poorly.

Or situations where ones input is only valuable for a limited period of time or around a certain subject matter.

If it’s an hour long meeting and management or project managers have organised it - chances are I’ll have my laptop with me and I’ll be getting things done.

Of course I don’t turn up with my laptop open, not only would that be rude it would also be presumptuous as to the quality of the meeting.

However, if the content of that meeting turns out to be fluff - I’ll be working on being productive rather than watching slides of information that could have been emailed.

mrmondo··on Webpack 4 Beta released
Indeed, it does also feel like the JavaScript community or rather JavaScript related projects seem to be more attracted to emojifying blog posts, release notifications etc... while perhaps a bit informal it’s probably not the end of the world however perhaps indicative of a combination of excitement of the developers involved and some slight lack of maturity.
mrmondo··on Apple prepares macOS users for discontinuation of 32-bit app support
Been beta testing this for quite some time, if anything it’s getting worse. The performance of outlook and word is abysmal, random crashes, high CPU usage under no activity and the list goes on.
mrmondo··on Apple prepares macOS users for discontinuation of 32-bit app support
Word is truly dreadful, not just to use but the code it generates in each document is a mess, it’s no wonder there’s so many formatting problems in docx files.
mrmondo··on Apple prepares macOS users for discontinuation of 32-bit app support
Glad to see the last of the old 32bit legacy go, of course the good thing is if someone did want to run some ancient software that’s 32bit or even 16bit you can still spin up a VM of a legacy OS that can run those binaries.
mrmondo··on Curry spice turmeric boosts memory by nearly 30%, eases depression, study finds
I was not expecting to be linked to what appears to be properly conducted science based trial. As others have noted the sample size was small at 40 people which just leads me to looking forward to a larger scale controlled study.
