mrmondo··on GitLab sees huge spike in project imports
While I highly doubt that, GitLab is Open Source - Github is not Open Source.
mrmondo··on Scrum disempowers developers
You pretty much too the words out of my mouth - I was talking with someone about this just yesterday. I suspect that when interfacing with 3rd parties that are over-burdened with inefficient processes it means that he/they have to stoop to their level and dumb down their production line to work with said party.
mrmondo··on Winds 2.0: It’s Time to Revive RSS
I also highly recommend Reeder for both iOS and macOS, it’s absolutely brilliant and it’s an actual native program not more of this JavaScript in a web frame bloat/slothware.
mrmondo··on How to Fix “ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR” on Google Chrome?
Was wondering the same thing. Just seems like a points grab.
mrmondo··on Fonts for Complex Data
Im fairly sure it was typography.com is notorious for tracking your movements around the Internet, obviously this is common behaviour from web font providers but I seem to remember this group being especially intertwined with ad tracking *citation needed but currently walking and typing!
mrmondo··on Sublime Text 3.1 Released
Really? ST3 has had almost daily dev releases leading up to 3.1 and before that it was at least once a week.
mrmondo··on Sublime Text 3.1 Released
Interesting you say that, in the dev shop where I work practically all the devs and ops people use sublime text as their editor of choice, I think there’s a couple that use vim.

I don’t believe there is any trustworthy evidence that closed source software is more stable than open source software.

mrmondo··on Go's New Brand
While I don't really 'care' about the logo of a programming language per se, this makes 'GO' look like a courier / delivery company to me, it also seems a little odd that both letters are the same case.
mrmondo··on Controversial New Milk Shakes Up Big Dairy
"There is no current scientific evidence that A2 milk has nutrition and health benefits beyond regular milk"

- Greg Miller, chief science officer at the National Dairy Council in the U.S.

mrmondo··on Tell HN: My best productivity hack
Ha! Never considered that, thanks for the interesting feedback.
mrmondo··on Tell HN: My best productivity hack
Yeah, it didn't need new all new Aircon but we got the Aircon techs in to look at it and they're changing where the inlet vents are located and adding an additional unit of separation into the ducting.
mrmondo··on Tell HN: My best productivity hack
> I bought a CO2 monitor.

We did the same, it's very noticeable, what we sometimes do is cover it and if people are feeling drowsy only then reveal it so we could be sure it wasn't a placebo (it wasn't).

I hacked up (I'm not a programmer!) some code to log the data to CSV, which I then presented to the business as a case to change our aircon system: https://github.com/sammcj/airqualitylogger

mrmondo··on ZFS on Linux: Unlistable and disappearing files
My thoughts exactly, while the RHEL kernel has lots of backported patches - it's by no means complete or near current.
mrmondo··on Western Digital WD Black 3D NAND SSD Review
Not to mention that Sandisk’s reliability and firmware was (is) a great measure better than Samsung’s - which has more than its share of problems and scandals.
mrmondo··on It's time to head back to RSS?
I agree with those that say RSS never went away, for the last 10 years or so I’ve noticed my dependence on RSS grow and it’s critical to my keeping track of news across a number of blogs and websites. I wrote a shitty little blog post on it last year: https://smcleod.net/thoughts/2017/09/22/return-of-the-rss.ht...
mrmondo··on People are downloading their Facebook data and the results are terrifying
That is an excellent thread indeed, thank you for the link
mrmondo··on Show HN: Kodex, a code editor for iOS with multi-caret support and more
When I’m oncall I often use my iPhone / iPad if I need to make changes to puppet automation code or similar.
mrmondo··on Jeffisms
Try Firefox or Safari, both seem to render fine to me on both latest stable versions of iOS and macOS.
mrmondo··on LG Releases WebOS Open Source Edition, Looks to Expand WebOS Usage
Glad to see this happen, Web OS on my late 2016 LG TV is actually very, very good. It offers far more advanced video configuration than any other TV I’ve seen and the OS is very fast (nothing at all like using those dreadful TVs with android running on them).

One thing that does seem rather odd and somewhat worrying is that it only builds on Ubuntu 14.04(!) and:

> “We strongly recommend you NOT to use Linux virtual machine on Windows or Mac OS for building webOS OSE, as it may cause unexpected issues.”

mrmondo··on Jeffisms
Seems to display / render fine on my iPhone X (Safari), what browser are you using?
mrmondo··on Astronaut’s DNA No Longer Matches His Identical Twin’s After Year Spent in Space
While I think it’s important to disagree with news that might be less than factual and better yet - think with a skeptical mindset, I think it’s rather anti-intellectual to blanket misleading or factually lacking news as ‘fake news’.
mrmondo··on New Raspberry Pi Model B+
Yeah, although adding usable wireless is a big bonus - I wish it had 2-4GB of RAM and I wish you could put the USB ports into gadget mode like you can with the zero, but preferably at least two or more ports that can work with it. Also - I’m really disappointed there’s still no GbE.
mrmondo··on Tandem – Decentralized, cross-editor, collaborative editing
Looks neat, the only thing putting me off is that it requires nodejs and there’s no way I’m installing that pig of a thing on my workstation.
mrmondo··on SAS is on the brink of something
Yeah I thought - Special Air Service or SaaS
mrmondo··on Tell HN: Slack decides to close down IRC and XMPP gateways
What a depressing, disappointing move.

An already closed ecosystem is making itself further insulated from open culture and competition.

This further solidifies my position of avoiding the product.

mrmondo··on Show HN: Retweet disabler/enabler
Is any further information available about how the app works before I authorise it to act as me on Twitter (change my profile, post tweets etc...)
mrmondo··on Launch HN: Tarjimly (YC W18 Nonprofit) – Realtime Translators for Refugees
I too love the idea (and the story behind it).

But... the fact the it uses (or even can use) Facebook Messenger is enough to put me off recommending it to anyone or even really sharing news of the product.

Facebook not a company that I'd trust with data about me or those at risk.

Regardless, congrats on the launch, the landing site looks great too!

I'll keep an eye out for updates on alternatives to Facebook Messenger.

Keep up the good work!

mrmondo··on Eight Years On, Google Fiber Is a Faint Echo of the Disruption Promised
I’m not disagreeing (or agreeing) with you, but your comment did make me wonder if Google truly is less bureaucratic than (all / some) governments. For example back in NZ where I grew up sure there’s bureaucracy throughout the government - but it does seem like they deliver a _lot_ more than Google is capable of and across a far more diverse product range (e.g. from fibre to the home to universal healthcare etc...), interesting thing to think about and if nothing else it highlights to me just how poorly run most google products must be given their flop rate despite their enormous wealth, amount of data on people and their reach.
mrmondo··on A UI Experiment with the iPhone X’s Front-Facing Camera
As it does me, who are they to say what I hate? I most certainly don’t hate the ‘notch’ - I couldn’t care less about it other than hey - I’ve got some extra screen real estate on either side of the speaker and cameras so that the clock and indicators don’t have to cut into application space.
