mrmondo··on Open Source REST API for SpaceX data
Perhaps, I’m 30 if that helps.

In _this_ context it sounded very derogatory, as if they had nothing better to do and were just doing something likely useless or some such.

mrmondo··on Open Source REST API for SpaceX data
Bit harsh wording wise, but yeah I totally agree that’s a rough description of a community that made something neat.

Oh I didn’t know that, thanks for the link!
mrmondo··on Google Public DNS turns 8.8.8.8 years old
It’s obvious for some people (perhaps the OP, yourself and myself for example) it’s not obvious or obvious that it’s even an option to the majority of people.

I personally try to advocate for good privacy education at places of work, study and play usually with a combination of a) the naritive / context, b) Provide simple examples (of why it probably matters), c) Explain with metaphors, and d) Give some simple advice where possible.

It’s not a perfect strategy but I think it does noticeably help lift the awareness bar.

mrmondo··on Google Public DNS turns 8.8.8.8 years old
Absolutely agree, ideally we’d all be using DNS-over-TLS, however I think but DoH(S) is a ‘good enough’ alternative /if/ you trust the company running the servers.

Google I have essentially no trust in at all anymore (or maybe ever), Cloudflare I trust to a ‘reasonable’ degree; by that I mean I don’t believe they would (at the and leading up to the time of writing this comment) sell identifiable user data from their 1.1.1.1 DNS service and they have a very high technical skill level when it comes to internet security especially with regards to routing and network metadata. However it’s still not ideal or even slightly close to perfect security and while I’d trust Cloudflare over Google in a heartbeat - like anything that could change and better options that are also easy to use may (will likely) pop up.

Please try to be polite and stay away from nasty comments (especially when you’re not providing evidence based arguments).
mrmondo··on Google Public DNS turns 8.8.8.8 years old
I’m almost certain it is, even in the link you posted they use unversed language to state they DO store not just your information but also your personally identifiable (!) information:

> “Google Public DNS does not PERMANENTLY store personally identifiable information.”

You have to be very, very careful with services like this especially when it comes to Google, Facebook and Microsoft (and the companies they own), they use weasel wording in documents like this almost all the time and it’s clearly with intent to /seem/ as if they’re good citizens rather than to _prove_ that they are.

mrmondo··on The pfSense Book
Similar experiences +/- scale, crazy realibility while immediately applying security / important updates when available.
mrmondo··on The pfSense Book
‘Windows 7’... doesn’t mean much to be honest, if that OS didn’t corrupt its filesystem it’d crap out on its poor kernel or registry design and regardless why would you run a presumably important routing system on the same hardware you thought was suitable for ‘Windows 7’ (rhetorical).
mrmondo··on The pfSense Book
Sounds like you had some unrelated hardware issues TBH. I always run either decent quality fanless i3 or quad core celerons (yes I know, friends don’t let friends buy celerons but some recent models have been good bang for buck) for low impact deployments and always a cpu that supports and deployed with ECC memory for high impact / risk deployments because... ECC matters.

Regardless, easy to blame a routing OS for commonly poor quality hardware.

mrmondo··on The pfSense Book
A great resource for an excellently flexible and rock-solid reliable platform.

Have been running pfsense and pfsense clusters for many, many years and had practically nothing but ultra-reliable success stories.

mrmondo··on Is Apple Really Your Privacy Hero?
I came to the comments to suggest something very similar actually, either from Facebook or Microsoft. That is a great article (The Submarine) and is one of the sources I was considering linking to as well.
mrmondo··on PIN number analysis (2012)
OK, interesting point and taken on board, I've updated my comment to be more sensitive to the point you've raised, thank you for your feedback.
mrmondo··on PIN number analysis (2012)
Am I the only one that gets annoyed by the use of 'PIN Number' which is 'Personal Identification Number Number'? It annoys the !@#%$ out of me!

It works great too, here's my GTX 1080 MSI 'Gamer OC Edition' running as an eGPU from back in 2016: https://i.imgur.com/jZgugWO.jpg
mrmondo··on Why restaurants became so loud
Although young, I've found this a real problem. Many places have terrible acoustics and I totally disagree that making them better (maybe not great) is expensive - there's many simple things you can do to make a huge difference.

What I struggle with is hearing the conversation with the person across the table from me, what has actually recently helped is running a device with iOS 12 (beta) and using AirPods (https://www.engadget.com/2018/06/05/live-listen-ios-12-apple...) - it actually works pretty damn well, I just feel like a bit of a jerk wearing ear buds while dining / having a wine.

Shout out to you Sid for remaining so engaged in the community in a constructive, science backed and transparent manor as the company has grown.

mrmondo··on Youtube-dl: Command-line program to download videos
Seconded.

YouTube while it may contain a lot of video of content is really actually pretty poor product IMO. Lots of buffering, lots of ads, the apps have terrible UX as does the website and now that google is becoming less and less trustful (some would say always were but just becoming more evil with more data) I welcome video content hosted elsewhere. I really like Vimeo not just for the performance and video quality but I also find the interface quite good to use, it would probably need some adjustments if it were to take on the amount of content YouTube has.

mrmondo··on Youtube-dl: Command-line program to download videos
Could not agree more, especially as it’s a tool I use multiple times a day and I don’t think it’s ever failed me.
mrmondo··on Ask HN: Low-maintenance alternatives to Gmail?
Very happy Fastmail user here, it's great (and fast!) to use, I've _never_ noticed any outages, calendar always just works, search is excellent, it's device and OS agnostic and the organisation makes massive contributions to open source and mail related communities.

Interesting to see it has a 170W power supply - that’s a lot of energy!
mrmondo··on Open Source SVG Icons Library – Vivid.js
Isn't all of IE at something like 3% market share these days? If so, is it worth holding back web development for such a small user base?
mrmondo··on Your GitHub Alternative
Fair enough, there were a lot of radical UX changes early on but we’ve never had a problem with stability / reliability, by comparison we see a number of Github outages over any given year - to be fair that’s on the hosted product but I would most certainly not want to run Github ‘enterprise’ - it’s a VM image with MySQL and a bunch of other less than desirable technologies.
mrmondo··on GitLab sees huge spike in project imports
Complete and utter FUD, this is not the way GitLab operates - more importantly they are from the core an open source and transparent organisation that values both equally.
mrmondo··on Your GitHub Alternative
Indeed, nor was LinkedIn, Yammer etc... there is no ‘new’ Microsoft - that’s the same old marketing spin they use every decade to try and make themselves seem ‘hip’ by blaming previous employees rather than changing their ugly business model and lack of ethics.
mrmondo··on Your GitHub Alternative
I agree that bitbucket aka shitbucket like all Atlassian products is a POS, but GitLab is far from unstable? We moved to GitLab (self hosted) and it’s been nothing but incredibly reliable for our 120~ people organisation and we use it heavily for mission critical code control, CI/CD and internal Wikis, if it was even slightly unstable - there’s no way we’d still be using it let alone raving about it.
