mrmondo··on I'm a creep. I'm sorry
'Asking out co-workers is a huge no-no' - to me this feels almost anti-humanist to the point where business is truly more important than our own lives, our being, our existence and our own free will. There is a massive difference between asking out co-workers and sexual harassment.
mrmondo··on Show HN: EverydayCheck – A minimalist app to help you form new habits
Neat! Any chance of an offline version?
mrmondo··on Show HN: StackImpact – Python Production Profiler: CPU, Memory, Exceptions
Not to mention their laggy as anything JavaScript website, I love what you can get out of new relic if you try but you have to pay a LOT of money and you have to accept that their product has become slower and less user friendly over the past three years.
mrmondo··on A new approach to text rendering
If it does, I'll reconsider using it. I truly can't stand JavaScript 'apps'.
mrmondo··on Twist – Mindful Team Communication
Hi, is there an offline / self hosted version available? Like many ops teams we wouldn't want a lot of our conversations and attachments etc on public / shared hosting.
mrmondo··on Google Will Stop Reading Your Emails for Gmail Ads
Too little, too late IMO
mrmondo··on The Calibre Content Server
So glad about this, it always looked terrible on any Macs as it wasn't really designed with 2.5K-5K screens in mind.
mrmondo··on The Calibre Content Server
I've used it for years and love its features but yeah the UI and processing always felt heavy like a java app but as someone else noted it's not java - it's python so I suspect the laggy of slowness in the UI might be a side effect of python's single threaded / GIL performance issues. Python can be fast, especially for scientific work but in my experience - I get annoyed by python apps more than other interpreted languages such as Ruby as it often seems to peg a single core to 100% whenever I'm waiting for something to finish processing - again I'm sure it's the way things are written more than the language itself as such but it seems it makes it hard to write python applications that make efficient use of modern multi core CPUs. (I host a lot of Python, Ruby and web apps written in various other languages).
mrmondo··on New features you can't use unless you are in Python 3
No one should be using CentOS 6 in 2017, if you think python is your problem and you're running CentOS 6 you need to take a good hard look at your platform.
mrmondo··on Tails 3.0 Released
I can't honestly say I've seen a 32bit computer in what must be nearly a decade now?
mrmondo··on Show HN: JavaScript regex tester for macOS
"It's free - what are you waiting for..." seems kind of, creepy?

Also, what's the value in having this in JavaScript?

mrmondo··on PCIe 4.0 will be twice as fast as today's slots
I'm actually more interested in any latency decreases and improvements to direct CPU/memory access that may be included in the new standard.
mrmondo··on Dasung Paperlike Pro: E-Ink Monitor with HDMI connector [video]
I was an early backer of their last USB based monitor, it is truly useless - very poor refresh rate, highly overpriced, poorly written drivers, clunky construction and the list goes on and on.... it ended up as quite a large waste of money.

However, I do hope that the new version will succeed, I love reading on eink screens and I truly wish I had a decent, high resolution / DPI, fast refreshing eink display that would take DisplayPort and 'just work'.

mrmondo··on Show HN: “Statements and State”, the next chapter of my book on interpreters
Hey that's neat that you rolled your own build for your needs though.
mrmondo··on Show HN: “Statements and State”, the next chapter of my book on interpreters
Ah I see, if you use Jekyll or Hugo they will generate the feeds for you so I'm assuming it's something else?

Personally I've found that RSS is more popular than ever, especially in the tech space as the number of news sources available these days is so large partly due to the number of individual blogs out there and services like feedly along with wonderful apps like reeder.

mrmondo··on Show HN: Strukt – a visual shell for tabular data
Looks really interesting and really pleased to see it's a native app and not javascript in a web frame, thanks for taking the time to start this. The price is quite high though - do you have a demo?
mrmondo··on Show HN: “Statements and State”, the next chapter of my book on interpreters
Thanks for taking your time to commit to this, I was wondering if you had an RSS feed rather than the email subscription option? I tried a few feed readers and couldn't discover RSS or ATOM feeds present. (Although I may have missed it as on my phone at present)
mrmondo··on Kubernetes by Example
Yes I'm aware sorry was on transport so wrote a short reply. What I was relating to was Open 'Cloud' platforms and the presence of RedHat and their support / contributions.
mrmondo··on Kubernetes by Example
Totally agree. Heading to the Melbourne Openstack conference right now actually!
mrmondo··on Tad, a tabular data viewer
Good summary, thanks for the tldr;

+1 for the comment about Electronic/Javascript, also don't want to start a flame war heh.

exploratory.io looks really neat, it's a shame about the pricing and I'm not quite sure if it's a native app once you purchase or if it's an in-browser online-only app, because if it's online only 1) I'd be worried about uploading data to a 3rd party and 2) The internet in Australia is _terrible_ so uploading / downloading larger data sets might be painful.

Hey, congrats on putting this out, one small thing: Homebrew is showing v0.8.3 as the latest version however v0.8.4 has been released (probably an easy fix), also I was wondering if there were plans to make this a native / non-javascript app?
mrmondo··on Intel Announces Skylake-X: Bringing 18-Core HCC Silicon to Consumers
Very glad to to see the clock speed didn't take a drop for the extra cores however still no ECC is disappointing to say the least.
mrmondo··on Slap – A Sublime-like terminal-based text editor
Yeah it looks to be javascript... so, well that's that.
mrmondo··on How to Report a Bug to Microsoft
I feel your pain and too don't want to talk about it, the problem is the software 'corporates' think they should be using isn't what they should be using due to people in non-technical roles making technical decisions.
mrmondo··on How to Report a Bug to Microsoft
I used it a lot on Outlook for Mac and it's still dreadful software, I could give long list a problems with it but I have to just lump it in with the quality I've come to expect from Microsoft, regardless - from the 50 odd feedback reports I provided, I never received a link to a bug report or any thanks for testing and reporting on their (expensive!) software and 5 years later it still performs terribly, uses an excessive amount of network activity when idle, fails to properly render HTML, inserts bloated HTML junk into emails, crashes, misses basic features, leaks memory and wastes screen realestate.
mrmondo··on Malicious Subtitles Threaten Kodi, VLC and Popcorn Time Users
Interestingly running VLC 2.2.4 on MacOS 10.12 and checking for updates returns 'VLC 2.2.4 is currently the newest version available.', obviously I downloaded 2.2.5.1 from videolan.org but still odd.
mrmondo··on Turning Off GitHub Issues (2016)
Issues are very important, how you handle them is more important and that includes acknowledging the difference between discussion / decision making and bug or feature implementation.

People don't get burnt out from people discussing / proposing fixes or improvements, they get burnt out from not having the time or support to fix / implement them or from to much concurrent work and context switching.

mrmondo··on GitLab 9.2 Released with Multiple Assignees for Issues and Pipeline Schedules
Thanks for all your amazing hard work guys and gals, really truly appreciate all the effort that's been going into making GitLab releases faster, reliable and all the new features that have been coming out, especially around Issues and CI.

I upgraded our dev and then prod environments not after the announcement without a hitch.

Keep up the good work!

mrmondo··on Windows 10 Enterprise ignores various privacy settings
Scary indeed, I've noticed that a Windows 10 'Pro' VM I have at times seems to reset or change privacy / security settings. A first I blamed myself for doing something silly without realising it affected these settings or installing some software that changed them (which is a little scary in itself) but then I realised it was after windows update had run, every few months privacy or security behaviour would change.
mrmondo··on Screen sharing comes to Slack video calls
Ok, well I'm willing to bet that's the problem then.
