mrmondo··on When Microsoft's eBook store closes, your books disappear too
Hey, thanks for your reply, I appreciate it.

I’ve used deDRM a lot in the past, but it doesn’t work with the latest DRM on (I think AWZ3 files) - but perhaps it’s been updated since I last checked about 6 months ago or so.

mrmondo··on When Microsoft's eBook store closes, your books disappear too
I REALLY don’t agree with giving Amazon money (ethically) but I am a hypocrite and end up buying a lot of ebooks and audiobooks from them, I do my best to back up the files using calibre but I‘m sure they could lock down devices / files using DRM and their latest DRM incarnation is very hard to remove. I try to buy DRM-free ebooks and audiobooks whenever possible but I think mostly due to market domination authors and publishers end up at least mostly exclusively providing content via Amazon.
mrmondo··on Addition Font
I suspect there is something wrong with the font then, perhaps have a look at the console (app) to see if there are any logs related to the warning and log a bug with the fonts creator?

For reference IBM Plex (Mono) fonts that I’ve been using since release do not have warnings and work perfectly, however when I re-encoded them to add ligatures it turned out there were errors with the fonts, macOS warned me and I ignored the warnings, then I noticed higher than expected CPU usage from apps where I had enabled the modified fonts incorrectly.

mrmondo··on What Citrix is doing with Xenserver
Bit of a surprising comment - Xen is very widely used - even all of AWS is Xen (I believe), are you perhaps thinking of XenServer (Citrix's OS / Distro based on Xen)?

If you do mean XenServer, well - yes some large places are still using it but it's definitely dying out after they proved very slow to deliver new features then put a restriction on free / open source users as of 7.3 onwards that prevents clusters great that 3 hosts rendering mostly useless.

XCP-ng (https://xcp-ng.org/) is a fork of XenServer which is picked up where XenServer left off and is doing a lot in a short period of time (IMO) to add new features and build / support the community.

mrmondo··on New Zealand banning assault and semi-automatic rifles
Yeah fair enough too - it isn’t tech related, while political I feel it’s more social but certainly not technical.
mrmondo··on New Zealand banning assault and semi-automatic rifles
Oh, strange - I wonder why? (mods feel free to message me so I can improve future posts if required), I don’t generally have a bad rep on HN and it was an uneditoritialised title etc... anyway - what matters is that people are aware of the news, not who posts a link to it.

Context as to why I posted earlier today: I was born, grew up and lived in Christchurch until 2012 when I moved to Melbourne.

I was there and working in the main hospitals (sysadmin / ops engineer running the primary patient management and some lab systems) and in that role during both of the two major earthquakes that levelled the city.

The emotional, mental and social stress of those two major ‘natural’ disasters were so incredibly deviststing and this this shooting has surely got to pile on for people still living there.

mrmondo··on Show HN: My CV is also a bootloader
I too think it’s an awesome project, I wasn’t going to comment because I didn’t have anything to add so I thought I’d say how neat it was in this thread ;)

mrmondo··on Opkg-upgrade – a useful upgrade script for OpenWRT
I've been using this for the last 3~ months or so on my OpenWRT 18.06.1, r7258-5eb055306f (but with the latest packages) setup on my Linksys WRT3200ACM and it's been so useful and saved me a lot of time (hence sharing).
mrmondo··on Cloudflare expands its government warrant canaries
It's a real shame warranty canaries are illegal in Australia, it has on several occasions made me feel less confident about software, services or people involved in them here.

mrmondo··on Books I Recommend
I can’t recommend ‘“Surely You’re Joking, Mr. Feynman!”: Adventures of a Curious Character’ highly enough, a truly brilliant read (or listen) and many years later I find myself thinking back to it frequently.
mrmondo··on FastMail loses customers, faces calls to move over anti-encryption laws
I’m sure Bron, Rob or Nigel will weigh in shortly. Fastmail is a damn fine service, I now trust Australian internet privacy even less due to recent law changes and this does concern me not just with Fastmail but as someone that designs and hosts platforms for software the organisation I work with writes - which is also in Australia.
mrmondo··on ICANN Calls for DNSSEC for All Domains Following Domain Hijacking Attempts
Thanks Dang
mrmondo··on I Have 800 Passwords
2,067 at latest count... (I know it’s not a competition, but interesting none the less).
mrmondo··on ICANN Calls for DNSSEC for All Domains Following Domain Hijacking Attempts
Mods: this is the direct link to the article at ICCAN: https://www.icann.org/news/announcement-2019-02-22-en

(Also the current third party link doesn’t seem to load (for me) ‘Resource Limit Exceeded’)

mrmondo··on Shorewall – The End of the Road
A real shame, so much nicer that firewalld on the command line / files, I believe firewalld has some usable GUIs now for people that are running it on the desktop though and of course BPF should make things better / easier.
mrmondo··on A RISC-V CPU for $8
This is really good to know - thanks for the tip!
mrmondo··on A RISC-V CPU for $8
Ah I’ve had really good experiences with SeeedStudio too, ordered plenty of things over the years - dangerous site for me to visit when I have money ;,)
mrmondo··on A RISC-V CPU for $8
Oh so it is - also available here: https://www.yoycart.com/Product/578484113485/
mrmondo··on A RISC-V CPU for $8
Here’s the Aliexpress link to buy the package with wifi, LCD and camera, it’s about 40% more expensive than "taobao.com" if you’re not a Chinese citizen with ID but still cheap as: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/LEORY-Sipeed-M1-Dock-Develop...
mrmondo··on X265 3.0 released
Great to see Dolby Vision in the features there - I've been very impressed with it vs HDR10.
mrmondo··on Ask HN: What books changed the way you think about almost everything?
Probably the two that I find myself thinking back to most often are Stranger in a Strange Land (Robert A. Heinlein), The Phoenix Project (Gene Kim), The Great Shark Hunt (Hunter S Thompson), Several Bukowski short stories and most recently The Skeptics' Guide to the Universe: How to Know What's Really Real in a World Increasingly Full of Fake (Steven Novella, Bob Novella, Cara Santa Maria, Jay Novella, Evan Bernstein).
mrmondo··on “Lambda and serverless is one of the worst forms of proprietary lock-in” (2017)
You can’t (truly) outsource accountability.
mrmondo··on Bye, Bye, Google
I’ve never been asked or needed to.

If I did I guess I’d create a minimal google account with as little info as possible, ensure it’s security / privacy settings were set as restrictive as possible and then have to settle for using a Firefox container just for google sites (there’s a good pre-made on on the extensions site), you could go as far as also spoofing your user agent etc but that might just be more of a pain than it’s value.

mrmondo··on Bye, Bye, Google
Personally I switched to a mix of LibreOffice and Pages/Keynote and have been very happy with them. Google docs offers some awesome feature but I don’t think the privacy and ethics of using Google products justified its use and as of MS Office - I personally think that the software quality is terrible (Yes I know excel is powerful but there’s probably a better product or system for most of a spreadsheets solutions (but not all I’m sure)).
mrmondo··on Bye, Bye, Google
Like the two posts above - I third Fastmail, great company, great engineers and the platform works so damn well!
mrmondo··on Bye, Bye, Google
I’ve see the odd app / website like that, if it’s not OSS I give them the finger and move on (while politely suggesting they should offer non-google integrated options), if it is OSS I start by opening a feature / bug request (if there isn’t one already) and submit a MR if I’m able to (which often I’m not as I’m more experienced in the Ops and Sec space than I have development (understatement of the century)).
mrmondo··on GreatFire is tracking Apple iOS applications for instances of censorship
Isn't it Chinese censorship - as reflected by Apple App store in China vs USA?
mrmondo··on Microsoft Azure data deleted because of DNS outage
I can’t say for sure, but I’m assuming they meant because it is (in comparison) not a distributed (or complex) system.
