mrlala··on The Future of RTS
Back in like 2005(?) when it came out it was also the first game that I ever saw supporting dual monitors. I had the overhead map on one screen and normal view on my main screen. That was pretty darn cool back in the day.
mrlala··on The Future of RTS
They Are Billions is really the only RTS I've played in ages, and it's technically not even an RTS to some degree.. it is and it isn't. But they really made a unique game so I've highly enjoyed it from time to time.
mrlala··on Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?
Still could never get into WoW after enjoying Everquest for so many years. Such an amazing game if you had the time to sink into it.
mrlala··on Voat Is Shutting Down
And again we come to the conclusion of the only real use for cryptos- moving money when no one wants to touch you with a 10 foot pole otherwise.

But to the moon, right!

mrlala··on Voat Is Shutting Down
>The design of your website in Reddit's case has nothing to do with scale

Sure it does. Once you reach a large enough scale you kind of need to do stuff to attempt to not be losing money on the development & hardware costs of such a large platform.. so you end up changing, even if it's not 'for the best'.

mrlala··on Congress is set to ban most surprise medical bills
>Because of limited resources in Canada they had waiting times of several years (Google can point to multiple sources), UK or Nederlands a few months

First, EVEN if what you are saying is true (spoiler alert- it's not). There are always private options if you really want to pay for it. So your argument of "there are wait times" basically goes away, because if you really want something "like you have now", you can pay and get it.

Next, what is better.. never being able to afford an elective/non urgent surgery, or wait 4-6 weeks (or perhaps even longer) for it? The point is you will get it and not go bankrupt.

And if it's urgent, you get it right away. Anything else you have heard is bullshit or has some other context you don't realize.

I mean, do you realize how many people in this country are living with conditions that probably even being able to go to a doctor on a regular basis would massively improve their life? But they can't afford it- even with "insurance".

>I hate the system in US, but at least it gives a chance to people who can afford it;

>here, everybody is equally screwed.

How do those two statements make any sense? You literally just said it gives a chance to people who can afford it... then claim everybody is equally screwed. No they aren't. It's like anything else- the top maybe 10-20% have no issues with it because they can afford it. So fuck everyone else right? The same top 10-20% who just love that the stock market booms during a pandemic because they can just continue to print more money.

Man your attitude pisses me off.

>The only thing that works well here is giving birth, that is free, you can cover that by the state or federal in US too

The hell are you talking about? "Insurance" covers birth yeah, but it'll still generally max out most peoples deductibles so it's still thousands and thousands of dollars... and heaven forbid you have a c-section or some other complicated birth.

Also, I lived in the UK for a number of years. We had so many trips to the doctor for our birth. Cost? Fucking 0. Yeah peoples taxes are a bit higher once you make descent money, but that's the damn point! People who can afford it are paying into a system that makes everyone better off.

We should be trying to make EVERYONE AS A WHOLE better off, not only the top 10-20% which is apparently what your logic is.

mrlala··on Congress is set to ban most surprise medical bills
How any of you snakes on here can downvote this is beyond me.

I mean, I know who you are. People who have a great job and don't really have to worry about insurance. Or maybe at a university where insurance is probably covered well. So f everyone else, right?

I am self employed so I have to worry about paying all this shit myself; 11k family deductible with 40% co-insurance for $1200.

Every time my young kids have had something that was not like a massive emergency, you know what the thought is? Oh god is this worth going to the hospital for and spending 1k? Or when I had my own person health issues, my first thoughts are always how much is this going to fucking cost?

So yeah, if you think OPs link is exaggeration.. it sure as hell is not.

mrlala··on Congress is set to ban most surprise medical bills
>The intent here is to prevent people from gaming the system by buying insurance only right after a serious diagnosis.

Of course.. but, that's basically why health insurance should be "required" for everyone, because then it's not an issue.

Because if you are not gaming the system, and make a simple mistake by OP, it can be fucking life altering.

I was in a similar situation a few years ago. For whatever reason our auto payment stopped on the health insurance on a year-to-year rollover. I didn't notice, everything is on autopay. Sure it was my 'fault', but you know what the result was? I was uninsured for 9 months (except for a garbage plan I could find that I'm sure would have done almost nothing).. if something serious had happened I would have been FUCKED.

So yeah we can sit here and say all this bullshit about eligibility windows. But the truth of the matter is every one of these things just points to why the entire country should be covered.

It's honestly SICK how some people think healthcare should work. And honestly the amount of resources put into all the billing jobs and compliance and all the bullshit is STAGGERING. How much energy is wasted on the bullshit billing systems and rules which are just made to fuck people over who have health problems.

Media coverage dominates new technology [3d printing]... SHOCKER I TELL YOU!

mrlala··on TikTok Bans MLMs and Content That Aims to Deceive People for Financial Gain
OP is not really wrong.. half of what ends up on the front of tiktok is girls literally advertising themselves to get your attention so you visit their profile to find their instagram and then to get the onlyfans link.

So I would agree it's "deception" in terms of they are pretending to post actual content, but it's 100% meant to be an advertisement for financial gain.

And hey whatever they can do as they please.. but it really does fall under a similar category.

mrlala··on When will virtual reality take off? The $100 bet
Gorn.

You have absolutely nothing like that in the non-VR space. Being able to physically swing weapons is night and day vs clicking a mouse. Picking up a bad guy and throwing him, etc.

Also, in some FPS type games (like paintball, or Battle Dome).. being able to literally peak around corners is a game changer for the feeling of immersion and it makes a huge gameplay difference.

Finally.. Climby! Being able to have a climbing simulator that you are really using your hands/arms and having a feeling of vertigo. You don't get that with keyboard/mouse & 2d.

mrlala··on When will virtual reality take off? The $100 bet
> I don't think i'm alone with these feelings either.

Hmm.. I think you are in the vast minority for sure. I've been following (and an adopter) of VR since the beginning and I think this is really the first time I've heard someone say something like that.

What I don't get is you say "sensory deprivation" but you are anything but deprived on sensory.. you feel like you are in another place with visual & audio. I guess when there's a loading time or something and it's all black, I can see what you mean a little bit..

mrlala··on Bitcoin breaks above $20k
>Bitcoin is an investment

Well what I find ironic is you are against the concept of interest but consider a cool technology like blockchain an "investment". If you were really so righteous about economics you would realize turning cryptos into "investing" is a total scam.

mrlala··on Bitcoin breaks above $20k
Not at all, you know why? Because everyone talks about BTC relative to some other currency.

The very topic of this post "Bitcoin breaks above $20k or $20,000 USD / BTC". How can something that can only be quoted in terms of another currency be inflation resistant?

mrlala··on Bitcoin breaks above $20k
>driven to a large extent by greed and ignorance. But so is a lot of the stock market and other investment vehicles

That I completely agree with and have almost as much issue with. But at least the underlying's have some value. The actual value is up for debate, but it's actual value of something (like an underlying company and their cash/IP/other assets etc) or a commodity which is physically useful (an ounce of gold, a barrel of oil).

Bitcoin has no underlying value. You equate that to conch shells- ok, but that's all they had when they used it. We already have currencies. So comparing it to a situation where a civilization may have used conch shells is pretty laughable. If all we had was conch shells and you came up with bitcoin? Great! Seems like a nice idea, it's an improvement. Bitcoin, however, is not an improvement by any stretch of the imagination.

>The world wants and needs a medium of exchange, otherwise we are back to bartering fish for sheep skins.

That's what... currencies are for especially the USD in particular. You say otherwise we are back to bartering fish for sheep skins.. huh? We are not there, we have currencies... Are they perfect? Of course not. But we have a few extremely large currencies (like USD, EUR) that do exactly what you say.

And now here's the humorous thing. You will tell related to currencies- "well, what good does USD do to me, I'm in Country X and can't use it or don't have it!" The fucking price of crypto is being quoted RELATIVE TO CURRENCIES so... wtf?

If you are in Country X and want to send some value to the person in Country Y.. ok so yes you can send bitcoin. Great. But what if you actually want to use your money? You have to convert bitcoin into X or Y?? There is no point to all of this!

And because of different costs of living all throughout the world, the 'amount' of bitcoin you pay someone would still 'relative' to their underlying currencies worth.

I'm just getting tired even trying to type this insane circular logic.

If there were no thieves and people were perfect, then crypto might make sense. But because there is no recourse for accidentally sending money to the wrong person, literally losing your hard drive or whatever and you can't recover, someone hacking into your account etc.. crypto is MEANINGLESS for any normal use.

mrlala··on Bitcoin breaks above $20k
(I tried to post this response hours ago but HN is so annoying with how often you can comment sometimes...)

I don't understand why you make this comparison?

Gold is a physical item with real-world use cases. Gold is rare and has physical applications which is why it's valuable. We can't magically create more gold.

Now you are going to say bitcoin is fixed as well. Fine, but it has basically no use case. Also, it can be replicated a billion times over with any other cryptocurrency. So I would even say it's debatable to call it 'rare' or 'fixed', even though I know what you mean.

The amount of gold which has been mined in the entire human history is about a 20m cube. That's it. Gold is used in very useful in many industries around the world and is visually appealing. THAT is why it has value.

If Gold was "rare" but looked like garbage and had no physical application then it would NOT be valuable. I don't get how you are trying to make this argument.

mrlala··on Bitcoin breaks above $20k
Sigh.

I 100% understand what you are saying but I also 100% disagree with it.

This is all greed with no substance. Wealthy people and those who desire to be wealthy are doing everything they can to arbitrarily prop up something which does not really have value. And they seem to be winning- which is everything that is wrong with the world right now.

>forcibly kicked out founder Brendan Eich because you disliked his unrelated politics

>belittles everyone who doesn't share your narrow ideology

Wake up to the present. People who actively try to ban same-sex marriage are just as bad as segregation was back in the day.

Calling this "narrow ideology" is preposterous.

There is nothing wrong with homosexuality and they should be given the same rights as everyone else. It's NOT a debate. So if someone is actively trying to campaign against equality then they are flat out wrong and deserve the backlash.

mrlala··on I lost all my savings in a mistaken Ethereum transaction
You don't know what you are talking about.

I mean hell, when I was in the UK our landlord gave us the wrong banking info and we were paying for 6 months to the wrong account! I don't know how our landlords went 6 months without knowing they weren't getting paid.. but once they told us I called the bank and they were able to contact the owner of the account it was going into and pull the funds back to the correct account.

Now sure if the owner of this "wrong" account was doing something sketchy it would have been more complicated, but there still would have been as full of recourse as possible. It's not your money just because the bank puts wrong money in your acct.

And sure wire's are a bit more complicated..

But yeah- end of the day the banks are able to do something if it's legit.

mrlala··on Firefox 84.0
I will do that and file a bug report.

I actually just tried again, and Netflix does not seem to be doing it.. only Hulu. It does this on multiple machines so perhaps just Hulu <> Firefox specific.

mrlala··on Firefox 84.0
Since this is a firefox thread, I have a very annoying bug that I haven't had much luck searching on... any luck here?

I really like the picture-in-picture feature of firefox. However, if I have a video in PiP mode and I click pause, randomly about 5-10 seconds later it unpauses and keeps playing. This happens on both Hulu and Netflix.. on multiple computers and has been going on for quite some time.

Seems like such a common thing I'm surprised it hasn't been fixed.

mrlala··on Record Breaking Number of Journalists Arrested in the U.S. This Year
No idea but I agree.

Part of me thinks it's 'intellectual elites' here that simply can't fathom not working at a FAANG job making 250k+ and don't understand the problems most people have. And if you aren't working at one of those you must be the ultra silicon valley entrepreneur trying to do the next big thing because money.

Probably downvoted for this but whatever, I think it's the truth. When I first was on this site a few years ago I thought it was a cool forum for geeks, but it's just not that at all really.

mrlala··on SuperRT – Realtime Raytracing on the SNES
I mean ok but then it should be like "Building an external GPU for the SNES".. people are being "dismissive" because of the title's initial expectation- that it was done on a vanilla SNES that you may have laying around at home.

It's all about expectations...

mrlala··on SuperRT – Realtime Raytracing on the SNES
>I'm not sure the title implies that

Sure it does.. it says "Realtime Raytracing on the SNES". To any normal person "SNES" means a super nintendo you would have at home.. not one that has expansion cards etc.

Anyway cool project but the title is indeed a bit misleading.
