mr_justin··on The Buzzer
The Buzzer can be heard on disc 4, track 32 of the Conet Project. The entire collection is a free download.

Wilco's Poor Places uses a sample from track 4 of disc 1, which also gave the title to the album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

mr_justin··on Dilbert's Scott Adams on Betting on the Bad Guys
If you really want to bet on the bad guys, invest in the companies behind BP and this oil spill. Such as Halliburton. Some people are speculating that BP will fold from this disaster due to the enormous projected cost of cleanup (10-30 times the cost of Valdez).
mr_justin··on Rethinking Rails 3 Controllers and Routes - PeepCode Blog
You didn't enjoy the benefit of being able to compare the two ideas side-by-side? They both neatly fit the screen in most resolutions if your browser window is max height, no scrolling in that particular case.

Beautifully designed article and your specific example is a great attention to detail on the author's behalf.

mr_justin··on Ruby: shallow copy surprise!
Sorry, I wasn't trying to say they solved the problem. They say exactly what they do and don't do.
mr_justin··on Show HN: didtheywinornot.com Single Purpose Scores Site
Would love to see this for NBA. Considering we're in the semifinals right now I would've expected it :)

mr_justin··on Tell HN: We launched Gaia GPS on Android today
I had no idea this product existed, thanks for the heads up. I'm skeptical of installing anything on my clunky G1 but will keep it in mind for my next backpacking trip. Storing cached map images locally is great. I used the heck out of Topo! back in the day, nice to see a mobile device equivalent.
mr_justin··on Steve Huffman on Lessons Learned at Reddit
So you're saying from the Fall of 2007 to Fall of 2009 he was a full time hire as opposed to a contractor like it says in the transcript?
mr_justin··on How did Facebook guess my email address?
This can occur when somebody tries to invite their friend but they type the address wrong. I get lots of emails that were intended for somebody else and 100% of the time it is because they left a character out of the email address. I've received 2 facebook invites in the last 2 months from people who thought I was this other person.
mr_justin··on Steve Huffman on Lessons Learned at Reddit
He says (transcript is below the video) that he left Reddit in the Fall of 2007 but continued working as a contractor until the Fall of 2009 so he doesn't really address the current events of Reddit.
mr_justin··on Tell HN: New Google homepage, A/B testing gone crazy.
Nobody else in the world has anything even close too as many visitors as google, so it's really hard to apply normal logic to this testing they are doing. My feeling is that every single tiny and seemingly insignificant change will have an impact on their bottom line. If it affects 0.1% of their users, that's still a whole ton of people. I see nothing wrong with this multivariate a/b testing.

Top right corner
mr_justin··on Facebook is Getting Orwellian. I Vote Ctrl-W.
What if my choice was to ignore your so-called forced choices and I click the back button instead? What impact does this have on my privacy?
mr_justin··on Apple killed lala.com
But once Lala is shutdown, he will have no music to show for that $100 spent. Subscription models to not cost nearly that much, yet you're asserting that his $100 was basically just that ... an opportunity to listen to a select number of albums at a very high cost.
mr_justin··on Jobs on Flash: Hypocrisy So Thick You Could Cut it with a Knife
Really? I leave mine running for weeks on end with no issues. I try to keep it up to date but usually let the updates stew for a month before upgrading. iTunes is indispensable software for me, and I don't own an iPhone, iPad, iPod or any of that. Nor do I use it for purchasing music. Strictly as a music organizer/player, I think it is fantastic and integrates perfectly with the operating system.

That being said, the last time I used iTunes on Windows it was about as enjoybable as waiting for a Java Applet to load up.

mr_justin··on Banned from buying iPads... for life.
Exactly. The whole thing is fishy imo. Buying iPads privately and shipping them worldwide?
mr_justin··on [dead]
The move by Apple could be roughly compared to saying Dreamweaver is banned from the web because of the sub-standard HTML it produces, but the argument presented here is a stretch to say the least.
mr_justin··on Bye Bye Flash: GitHub's Network Graph is now Canvas
Canvas has wider support doesn't it? SVG has really stagnated in the last 4 years or so.
mr_justin··on Bye Bye Flash: GitHub's Network Graph is now Canvas
Does it handle click/drag events? If you check out the network graph of repo with a lot of commiters/activity, you can click and drag the graph around. It works fantastic with canvas/javascript.

Example: http://github.com/madrobby/scriptaculous/network

mr_justin··on Comet is dead, long live websockets
Maybe when Microsoft implements Web Sockets in their browser 10 years from now, this might be applicable.

FWIW, I believe the proper usage is "X is dead, long live X".

mr_justin··on Video: Jack Dorsey Talks Square And I Buy Him Coffee With It
People will want receipts on site. For day-to-day transactions, it looks like a hassle but I could see this being great for paying back friends or whatever.
mr_justin··on Gmail Labs: Got the wrong Bob?
Darn, I thought this was something to deal with people sending you stuff that was addressed to somebody else they know with the same name and nearly the same email address. I'm not talking about people who have me in their address book, just random people who fat-finger an email address.
mr_justin··on Ask HN: OSX Package Management
I don't know, I've been pretty happy just building stuff the old school way. Never been a fan of package managers and especially not macports. I just don't trust 'em.
mr_justin··on You're the Smartest Guy In The Room ... but please, try to restrain yourself.
That's fine if you don't buy it, but it still seems to be an accepted idiom.
mr_justin··on Anaphora in Ruby
How is the lack of an anaphoric expression in Ruby a wart or even a fundamental problem?
mr_justin··on Sinatra - Hyper Fast Mini Webapp Development in Ruby
I'm on Safari (4.0.3) and I'm getting "Failed to open page". Had to manually add the "www.".
mr_justin··on _why is no more
_why's account on github has always been "why", presumably because github does not allow an account name to start with an underscore.

_why deleted his account and somebody snatched it up real quick

mr_justin··on _why is no more
These (dead mans switches) are online services which can terminate accounts for you and send emails on your behalf. Some of them work by sending you an email once a month or so to check up on you, if you don't reply, the switch is triggered.
mr_justin··on _why is no more
Why is it sad? Because he deleted his accounts? Or are you assuming something bad has happened to him and his accounts where deleted by somebody else?

Why strikes me as the kind of person who would delete his online presence on a whim, just because it would be fun.

mr_justin··on The Android Opportunity
Some of the issues you are complaining about can be cured with a setting (syncing contacts). Some should not be features of an open handset using non-proprietary technology (syncing music), some are legitimate bugs though not everybody has them (crash when pairing) and some are just rants.
