mproud··on An Apple (II) for Teacher
As a kid who grew up in the public schools in Minnesota, MECC was amazing, and Apple II’s were everywhere. Each classroom had a computer, and our school had an entire computer lab. We had access to every piece of MECC software — history, math, spelling, social studies, and many other titles like Print Shop. All of the software was very, very good.

There are a few stories about Oregon Trail, one of the most popular games that was originally written by a few Carleton students for the public schools on older computer hardware that was then rewritten for the Apple II. (It’s so iconic, Xennials in America are sometimes nicknamed the “Oregon Trail Generation” because of how pervasive the game was in schools to help teach about the westward migration in the mid-19th century.) Supposedly, Apple put in a bid at the last minute with the state and won the school contract, and they had a virtual monopoly in the public schools in Minnesota.

mproud··on MacBook Neo Review: The Laptop for the Rest of Us
I think the writer got the prices wrong, unless these are Canadian prices or something. It’s $599 and $699, not $599 and $799.

They’ve been around over 90 years and have been making plastic bricks since the 1950s and are arguably the most successful children’s building toy product in history. They have amazing brand recognition, and beyond the toys, they have successful video games and movies.

According to my local news outlet, they’re up 12% in revenue growth in the last year (which outpaces the rest of the toy industry) and up 1,200% since 2004.

Any Mac with the globe on the key is Apple Silicon.

Yes, but I think some of this is also the increase in food worker minimum wage in California.
mproud··on -tucky (2023)
Oh, the real Twin Cities (Minneapolis-St. Paul) we certainly have a little rivalry and antipathy going on, but generally, very little. The other commenters here hinted at it: there are other towns and cities too. When people often say “the Twin Cities” they really mean the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, which is a seven-county, 3 million person region. There aren’t just two identities — there are several dozen identities — but they’re so small and nuanced that the distinction is often dropped or forgotten, or simplified (downtown vs. outside downtown, city vs. suburb, old vs. new developments, etc.)

Never heard of Minne-tucky before, but yeah, outstate or rural Minnesota would be that.

mproud··on 7- and 14-segment fonts "DSEG"
It seems to me that the 7-segment font would work better in all lowercase, specially if you don’t need to differentiate letters from numbers. A lowercase E would be easy, a lowercase G would basically be a 9, and you could do a two-story lowercase A.
mproud··on 30 Year Anniversary of WarCraft II: Tides of Darkness
I’m convinced “zug zug” is a reference to a scene from the 1981 movie /Caveman/[1].

mproud··on Work after work: Notes from an unemployed new grad watching the job market break
I’m not saying people should get jobs they are way overqualified for, but I believe there are many in these situations who choose to be unemployed rather than work in jobs that they could do in their industry.
mproud··on Apple M5 chip
The hardware team has always shined, but how about one example of this:

The PowerBook from the mid 1990’s were hugely successful, especially the first ones, which were notable for what we now take for granted: pushing the keyboard back allowing space for palm rests. Wikipedia says at one time Apple had captured 40% of the laptop market. All the while the ’90s roared on, Apple was languishing, looking for a modern OS.

mproud··on Why do some gamers invert their controls?
Wayyyyy back in the day, I got a copy of Descent.

When you’re flying that spaceship, you’re best to use the default controls — pivoting is the name of the game.

Ever since then, that’s just how I was comfortable doing things.
