mpd··on AWS Kinesis with Lambdas: Lessons Learned
With so much overlap in the functionality and use cases of Kafka and Kinesis, it's not clear why they increase their surface area by using both.

Is Kinesis' write latency better than it was? IIRC it wrote to 3 data centers synchronously, which led to some pretty bad performance. This was almost 2 years ago though.

mpd··on Demand for Ruby on Rails is Still Huge
You can even use the under-the-radar PyCall gem[1] if you find you need a little peanut butter for your chocolate.

I discovered it recently, and it has been great to be able to use various Python NLP libraries without having to learn a new stdlib, deployment stack, etc.

mpd··on Fallout 3 in Fallout 4 mod cancelled due to voice acting copyright
This comes off as very dismissive of startups.

Do you honestly believe they are all 5 person companies doing frivolous things?

mpd··on Fallout 3 in Fallout 4 mod cancelled due to voice acting copyright
> When games are canceled hundreds of people have wasted thousands of hours on: games, ai, art (raster + vector).

I don't think this is any different than the risk of working for a startup. I've worked for a number of companies in my career that no longer exist. It's really the same as far as I am seeing.

mpd··on Coinbase Index Fund
Yeah, there's no way that what they're doing is worth 2% here.
mpd··on GrubHub Drivers Ruled Contractors
But you're also not able to just jump to the other place if it suddenly gets busier and more profitable.
mpd··on System76 ME Firmware Updates Plan
My home laptop is from a Kudu Pro from System76, while my work laptop is a Dell Precision 5520, with Ubuntu installed. My current Kudu is a replacement for another Kudu that died after a number of years.

For my particular case, the Dell has superior hardware (also, it's about a year newer), but its Ubuntu install has strange problems, and I get crash notification popups somewhat often (including immediately upon logging in for the very first time). The Kudu's install has been rock solid.

System76 has far superior support.

mpd··on Ubuntu 17.10: Return of the Gnome
I use Ubuntu daily, so I ended up stepping onto this land mine. Overall, I don't think Gnome is completely unusable, but some little things made me jump back to Unity (which can be chosen when logging in).
mpd··on Sugar industry withheld possible evidence of cancer link 50 years ago
I'm not sure why you brought chocolate and caramel into the picture, but I'm going to stick with my opinion that peanuts are not candy.

I think you're attempting to redefine a word to fit your narrative, and I'm not having it.

mpd··on Sugar industry withheld possible evidence of cancer link 50 years ago
Even peanuts become candy under your definition.

Rest assured that some still care.

mpd··on Apache Kafka Goes 1.0
Kafka needs additional infrastructure (ZK cluster) if you're going to handle it yourselves. Kinesis wins that category, but it has atrocious write performance compared to Kafka, and limited data retention time, if that's important for your project.

I'd look at a hosted Kafka solution before going with Kinesis.

mpd··on Slack is offline
At least with IRC I could connect to another server.
mpd··on Ask HN: How do you conduct coding interviews?
I sit down with them and have them write code. I give them a problem, a test suite, and an editor of their choice.

Their challenge is to get as many tests as possible to pass.

It's not really intended to get all of them - they branch into different areas, and the candidate can choose the direction they would like to move in.

mpd··on Introducing Atom-IDE
And maybe importantly, you can use a personal license at work, on paid projects, etc.

I've never been particularly bullish on Atom or Electron, but I think Jetbrains is going to be eating their lunch for awhile at least.

mpd··on Things about programming I learned with Go
As others have said, the scenario you describe wouldn't prevent data races at all.

Under the channels model, you wouldn't want more than one goroutine to be accessing the shared structure. One routine would hold the reference to the resource, and other routines talk with the first routine via channels (i.e. share memory by communicating).

mpd··on Why GitHub Can't Host the Linux Kernel Community
Frankly, I think the Linux kernel is too important to even consider subjecting itself to the Github T&C, community guidelines, etc.
mpd··on Take Naps at Work
Same. I live with insomnia, and naps are more myth than reality for me.

I do find myself taking what I call 'zen moments' throughout the day. They aren't ever intentional, but it feels so good when one comes on. And it helps.

But it's not a replacement for a good night's sleep in my case.

mpd··on Java blocking queues for concurrency beginners
I assume the name came from the select syscall, maybe unconsciously in your case :)

Hopefully something comes along to fill this gap officially. Channels are my favorite concurrency primitive by a huge margin. The more languages that support them, the better.

mpd··on Java blocking queues for concurrency beginners
Is there a select() analogue? Maybe under another name?
mpd··on Java blocking queues for concurrency beginners
This sounds like a WIP implementation of channels[1]. Am I wrong?

> Audi (example): letter (car/SUV/race car)+ number (quality: 1-cheap, 8-luxury) - BMW: first number is a quality class, two numbers is the Engine size. - Mercedes: first letter is a quality class, number is the engine.

You need to already know the brand to know this.

> (quality: 1-cheap, 8-luxury)

How high does it go? If they decide to turn it up to 11 tomorrow, is 8 still "luxury"?

I can't agree that this sort of versioning is any more transparent.

> (e.g. The Audi r8 and the a3, the 90k speakers and the 1k set)

This means nothing unless you already know the brand. There's going to be a minimum set of knowledge required to understand these versioning schemes.
