mpd··on Standard Ruby 1.0
Rubocop can autocorrect strings to use the "correct" quotes based on context. The rule for "Standard" is silly and unnecessary. The argument about readability falls flat with me.

At the end of the day, let the tools enforce this nonsense, but I'm still a performance wonk at some level and it drives me crazy seeing interpolatable strings without interpolations.

mpd··on Standard Ruby 1.0
Yeah, I don't see this having the same sort of diligence around additions (or even the initial ruleset) that would be present in languages with inborn opinions like Go and Rust.

It really seems like a bunch of arbitrary linting rules that this company likes to use, and they are trying to push it on the masses as "Standard", which the uninformed won't understand the nuance of.

I think the name is really predatory.

mpd··on The Framework Laptop
13 inches simply isn't enough for what I need. I'd consider this today if I could get a 15 inch screen.
mpd··on Pidgin – A Universal Chat Client
I feel so old seeing this. I was using GAIM very shortly after it was publicly released, and basically continued with Pidgin up until AIM died a few years back. I don't use any equivalent nowadays.
mpd··on Krebsonsecurity.com has an expired SSL certificate
Comodo is a renewal and updating an artifact (i.e. the actual cert), then you're done, vs. having to handle LE's API to deal with doing it 'automatically' and then carrying that forward. My point is simply that the cost is not zero.
mpd··on Krebsonsecurity.com has an expired SSL certificate
The cost to build and maintain the infrastructure to handle renewal and tests to verify such.
mpd··on Krebsonsecurity.com has an expired SSL certificate
While you're not paying for the cert, there is certainly still a cost involved.
mpd··on Build a Game This November with GitHub Game Off
I think there's still a ton of good stuff like this to be mined out of asymmetric multiplayer games.
mpd··on Uber Drivers Sue Company over Pressure to Support Prop 22
I am Jack's complete lack of surprise.

It's not like 22 ever had 100% driver support.

Exactly. Underwear does not work under this system.
mpd··on EU considers phasing out 1 and 2 cent coins
> The alternative here is to not have inflation and I don't see that happening (especially just to avoid phasing out denominations).

Clearly not true, nor am I advocating that.

It's a waste of time because there are stronger, more lasting measures that can be taken to solve this problem. This whole question reduces to the cost of minting coins.

mpd··on EU considers phasing out 1 and 2 cent coins
No, I'm advocating fixing the problem with stronger measures if the really want to fix the problem.

> You can't let the perfect be the enemy of the good - that just keeps anything from happening.

Cool story, but they as well schedule the session to get rid of the nickel now.

> 100% solutions do not exist in the real world.

A little hyperbolic here. This is of course false.

mpd··on EU considers phasing out 1 and 2 cent coins
> How much time was really wasted.

Plenty, since there are full articles being written about it.

And my friend, your second paragraph is irrelevant. This topic is about the removing coins from circulation, and my point is that they aren't going far enough if the goal is what they say it is.

mpd··on EU considers phasing out 1 and 2 cent coins
It's barely better than nothing.

If it's really, really a problem, there are much stronger measures that can be taken, whether that be digital solutions or all paper.

I don't see how your paragraph about differentiation is relevant here.

mpd··on EU considers phasing out 1 and 2 cent coins
My point is that it's wasting time and dumping problems on the future. There are stronger measures that can be taken, if the problem really needs to be solved.

"Fuck it, let someone else fix it." - I'm sick of this.

mpd··on EU considers phasing out 1 and 2 cent coins
It's a problem because then 20 years from now they just waste time doing the same thing (how long did it take this generation to remove pennies?)

Why? Do you think this would be the solution if humans lived for 200 years on average?

mpd··on EU considers phasing out 1 and 2 cent coins
That's just dumping the issue on the next generation. The solution would be different if we lived forever, I think.
mpd··on EU considers phasing out 1 and 2 cent coins
I'm not clear how this isn't kicking the can down the road for awhile, when eventually nickels will be the new pennies? Is there not a better solution? How much do nickels cost to make?

mpd··on Ask HN: What are your favorite developer-efficiency tips?
Be absolutely relentless in searching and discovering new tools, and throwing old ones away when they aren't the best anymore.

Note this can be painful to leave an old favorite behind.

mpd··on Why does `True == False is False` evaluate to False in Python? (2013)
Yes. Check out the differences between `&&` vs. `and`, along with `or` vs. `||`, which can lead to similar surprises.

Though you can skip this lesson if you've worked with Perl (any others?) in the past.

most of your list looks on point, but Spacewar! and touch screens both predate 1971.

mpd··on 88% of Americans use a second screen while watching TV
Compared to what we have today? I don't think you have to go very far back at all. Even in medieval times they didn't have the free time we have now.
mpd··on 88% of Americans use a second screen while watching TV
I think boredom has been redefined many times over human history. That's where leisure activities are borne from.

There was a point in our collective history when "where will my next meal come from?" is the overarching concern of every member of the species. Becoming a producer in such an environment would be nearly unthinkable, yet it's not a second thought today.

I can only imagine that this point becomes lawsuits that span decades.

mpd··on Smoking Banana Peels Is the Greatest Drug Hoax of All Time
Similar to "Steal this Book" and its advice on marijuana:

> There are two other ways that we know work to increase the potency of grass you grow or buy. One consists of digging a hole and burying a stash of grass wrapped in a plastic bag. A few months in the ground will produce a mouldy grass that is far fuckin' out. A quick method is to get a hunk of dry ice, put it in a metal container or box with a tight lid (taping the lid airtight helps), and sprinkling the grass on top. Allow it to sit tightly covered for about three days until all the dry ice evaporates.

mpd··on AWS Kinesis with Lambdas: Lessons Learned
Just past experience. In the end, the low data retention time was the real reason Kinesis didn't fit our needs, but the difference in write performance between the two was pretty stark. Read performance was fine for what we needed.
