mp05··on Win your fantasy league using operations research
Certainly the desire for a more sophisticated and robust model, but I'd be interested to understand the LOE involved and what levels of improvements are offered by said efforts. Perhaps the author can offer links to approachable books/articles on the matter?
mp05··on Win your fantasy league using operations research
Given that the mean is literally the expected value, I'm not all that surprised!

> The obvious solution for a data scientist like me was to use machine learning. But I didn’t. I just took the average score by the player during the last 5 games.

Wait, is he cracking a joke? If so, haha.

mp05··on Show HN: Magic-cli – A copilot for your command line
Thanks for the heads up, friend.
mp05··on Ask HN: Struggling with poor memory and executive function. What to do?
Ask your doctor today for Intuniv ER!

Seriously, it was a big help and minimal side-effects aside from a bit of aggression, but if you want assertive, you get assertive.

mp05··on The magic of small engineering teams
...go on? I've been using Posthog for a few months now and it's been a nice experience.

>> Small teams are effectively one-pizza teams, as opposed to the two-pizza teams idea popularized by Amazon.

They don't know how much pizza I can throw down, especially when the company is paying.

mp05··on Supreme Court overturns 40-year-old "Chevron deference" doctrine
I'd suggest shrinking the pool somewhat, perhaps by selecting from people involved in state-level politics already? This idea that any random person is fit to be a representative is bonkers to me.

The House should be filled with the Common Man, if you will, but I'm certain the authors were envisioning a parvenu bootstrapper like Ben Franklin or a Paul Revere.

But the Senate should change too--repeal the 17th amendment and bring the election of US Senators back to the state legislative bodies. It's a key element that made us a Republic and I'm failing to see how we can even refer to ourselves as such since 1913. I find it grating when people say "our democracy" because it is true now, but shouldn't be.

mp05··on Supreme Court overturns 40-year-old "Chevron deference" doctrine
It's a beautiful system, and it's interesting to think about how things would be different if the 17th Amendment never came about. But this ruling could bring the role of Congress in governance to the forefront again.
mp05··on Supreme Court overturns 40-year-old "Chevron deference" doctrine
I think one could make an argument that the US system of governance was designed to encourage "politicking" by populist types in the House. Love him or hate him, LBJ was excellent at this sort of thing and an ideal representative. But I've read a lot of Caro and it seems he feels the US Senate has jumped the shark in this regard. The narrative laments the glory days of high-minded debate and the occasional cane beatings, but it's hard to say if that's Caro's actual view.

But it's fair to argue the Senate wasn't built for politicking, yet that's what it's devolved into. I'm a political layman, but perhaps popular vote of senators is a terrible idea as it discourages people unwilling to play hardball to get involved... these engineers, doctors, scientists, etc. It takes a special kind of thick skin to be in national office and those type of people don't seem to gravitate to science-based fields, but rather law and professional politics.

mp05··on Supreme Court overturns 40-year-old "Chevron deference" doctrine
Perhaps this will cause us to start electing experts instead of lifelong politicians? The number of doctors, engineers, and scientists in Congress is pathetic.
mp05··on macOS Bartender Auto-Update Signed by Unknown New Owner
Yep, this is what I did once I saw this. I hate to admit it, but I'd lose my mind if I didn't have Bartender.
mp05··on The t-test was invented at the Guinness brewery
I agree with the sentiment, but I always have wondered what t-test a real engineer uses and why they only teach the "Student" version. Given the context, a bit of a clarifier would have been appreciated.
mp05··on What's the difference between a motor and an engine? (2013)
>> Today, the words are virtually synonymous.

Ehhh that's a stretch, unless we're talking Real Housewives type of "lay people".

As I understand it (within an engineering context), a "motor" converts electrical energy to mechanical energy, and an "engine" takes thermal/chemical/some other form of mechanical energy and outputs mechanical energy. But it's confusing because I've changed the "motor" in my old Honda when I was a teenager. So while I agree there is some nuance and blurry lines, not sure the two words are quite "interchangeable".

mp05··on Figma’s Journey to TypeScript
I think most people experienced PHP as the guilty party behind a lot of really, really terrible LAMP stack projects, but most of the time it was because mod_php was serving requests.

I used PHP to run some service workers managed with supervisord and it was fine. I just get annoyed with the class-based hierarchy but I'd guess they've evolved since 2017 or whenever I used it last.

> Not everything full of synthesisers and samples is “EDM”.

I didn't assert this.

mp05··on Everything we can't describe in music
I didn't say I didn't like some EDM. Some is made by very talented people.
mp05··on Everything we can't describe in music
Yeah, well frankly most EDM fucking sucks and that's pretty much why. Your average cool guy "producer" doesn't know the first thing about intervals, counterpoint, or even basics like triads or major/minor scales. But they sure can twist knobs in a way that makes neat sounds!
mp05··on NPR suspends veteran editor as it grapples with his public criticism

What does Occam's razor have to do with anything here? Unless you want to assert that assuming NPR acts in bad faith should be rejected in favor of them just being complete, out-of-touch morons?

What the hell does science have to do with this? Please stop conflating regression analysis of the results of a questionnaire with "science".

mp05··on What makes a great software engineer [pdf]
Everyone has a price. If you want upward of 60 - 70 hours a week from me at any given point, great. We're gonna double that comp package right? There will still be some boundaries, but we'll get that in the contract.

Believe me, I understand as well as anyone how being a salaried employee can turn into abuse, but it shouldn't be a crime for someone to need the unicorn, rockstar, 10x leetcode ninja to really crank for months on end.... so long as they're appropriately compensated! That said, I'll never, ever do that again UNLESS it's my company.

mp05··on What Boeing did to all the guys who remember how to build a plane
This sounds it was a bad thing for them! I hope other countries considering such agendas look at the outcome in South Africa and think twice.
mp05··on What Boeing did to all the guys who remember how to build a plane
Was there a particular catalyst or just a combination of factors?
mp05··on Is the Job Market Dying?
It's been said over and over for the past number of months, but fewer companies have a lot of use for a person whose sole talent is "sling code" and you just need to start bringing more to the table, or be a top 1% leetcode nerd.

I'm seeing some self-taught quant/econ guys getting real software jobs without a ton of formal CS coursework, but a lot of practical experience. Turns out the employers love that shit.... go figure?? ;)

Can't help but be reminded of this classic:

THE VILLAS AT KENNYS HOUSE

The most sought after address in all of South park for only the very privileged few. You can take in the views from the deck spa and enjoy the mixed Sodosopa culture. Also, featuring a private fitness center, clubhouse and so much more. Welcome home.
