moviewise (Life Lessons From Movies) is a searchable database on WordPress of one sentence movie summaries, movie quotes, and movie wisdom. It is a catalogue of the useful messages or insights about life that can be found in films. moviewise on substack offers long-form essays (some humorous) on the life lessons depicted in movies that can be applied in real life (so you don’t have to learn them the hard way). https://moviewise.wordpress.com https://moviewise.substack.com

moviewise··on Computer scientists show what makes movie lines memorable
"Two patterns emerged to identify the memorable choice: distinctiveness and generality."

"A line will be less general if it contains third-person pronouns and definite articles (which refer to people, objects or events in the scene) and uses past tense (usually referring to something that happened previously in the story)."

"Memorable quotes use more sounds made in the front of the mouth, words with more syllables and fewer coordinating conjunctions."

moviewise··on Movies Synchronize Brains
"When we watch a movie, our brains react to it immediately in a way similar to brains of other people. [...] Viewing a movie creates multilevel changes in the brain function. Despite the complexity of the stimulus, the elicited brain activity patterns show remarkable similarities across different people -- even at the time scale of fractions of seconds."

moviewise··on Meaningful movies help people cope with life's difficulties
"Participants recalling the meaningful films were also more likely to say the movie motivated them to be a better person, do good things for other people and seek what really matters in life."

"The findings suggest why many people see movies as more than just entertainment"

"Some films may help people cope and grow through difficult periods in their life"

moviewise··on How to Comfort Someone Who Is Sad
The holidays are difficult for some but there are ways to give comfort to someone, or even to comfort yourself when feeling down.
moviewise··on Artificial Intelligence completed Beethoven's unfinished Tenth Symphony
Agree! This is great and exciting. When people learn to play music composed by someone else, they are experiencing/living to some degree the mind of the composer. And music can fairly be described as sets of repeatable patterns. So if AI can take the entirety of a composer's life's work and discern key patterns, replicate them even, then some aspect of the mind of the composer is reborn. This is immortality. A dedicated grad student could probably do it for one composer; AI can do it for ALL composers. And humanity is all the better for it :)
moviewise··on Vaccine experts: Covid-19 booster shots aren't needed now
Yes. Also this: “It isn’t the absolute number of deaths that should be compared as there are 20 times MORE people vaccinated over age 50 (where most deaths occur) than unvaccinated. The UK has a 95% vaccination rate for people over 50. The rate of deaths is much, much lower in the vaccinated population. The rate of death is the number who have died in a population (vaccinated or unvaccinated) relative to the size of the population, usually expressed as number per 100,000 people. With 20,000,000 vaccinated people over 50, the death rate is 3.2 (per 100,000 people), but for the 1,000,000 UNvaccinated people, the death rate is 32 (per 100,000 people) — ten times higher. In other words, the vaccine is 90% effective against death, consistent with what was found in the original clinical trials.”

The CDC has a pdf (downloadable) presentation about the data being used to decide on COVID booster vaccines: https://stacks.cdc.gov/view/cdc/108332/cdc_108332_DS1.pdf

The UK government has data showing that about 2X more fully vaccinated people are dying from COVID than the unvaccinated (1,091 fully vaccinated vs. 536 vaccinated), even though the unvaccinated account for 3X more patients coming in for emergency care (6,492 fully vaccinated vs 14,319 unvaccinated) p.21: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/...

Just want to offer some encouragement and to second the advice to create a LinkedIn page to follow the accounts of companies/groups you are interested in, as well as try to connect with people in the same field and/or similar educational background. This way you will receive notifications on new positions available and sometimes can directly apply pretty easily.
moviewise··on How hard is it to get counting right?
I thought it was going to be about whether counts should start at 0 or at 1.
