mountainboy··on Digging for Utopia
looks interesting. Can someone summarize the rest of the paywalled article?
mountainboy··on “The Pirate Bay can’t be stopped,” co-founder says
Hey lovelyviking. I just wanted to say that you are right, and I agree with you.

The problem is that we are actually living in a medieval type of society. A pretty dark time actually. We have many people who enjoy exercising power over others. The trouble is that we think we are more advanced than we actually are.

We need to progress emotionally, spiritually, morally, and in our understanding of the natural world (physics: our reality). We need a new rennaissance, an enlightenment. To get there, we need clarity of thought from people like yourself who are unafraid to speak up and challenge the status quo.

keep shining your light and speaking your truth. Ignore the naysayers.

onwards.

mountainboy··on “The Pirate Bay can’t be stopped,” co-founder says
counterpoint. I do. every time. Using the term "pirate" or "piracy" for copyright infringement annoys the hell out of me.
mountainboy··on Solar-driven water splitting at 13.8% solar-to-hydrogen efficiency
so how would a person go about making one of these for use at home?
mountainboy··on Palm oil favors tumor expansion
any hydrogenated oil is toxic. The article does not state if the tested palm oil was hydrogenated or not.
mountainboy··on Show HN: I made a Chrome extension that can automate any website
like so many mozilla issues.
mountainboy··on Show HN: I made a Chrome extension that can automate any website
hmm, I was going to experiment on this hackernews page, so I clicked on Extensions->BrowserFlow and it opened a window with a single button "Sign In". So it appears it does not work locally at all.

Question: Is there a technical reason for this, or you just want to insist that everyone create an account for some reason?

I do not see an obvious reason why macro recording and playback could not be performed purely locally. So I am skeptical that a server is needed, but always willing to learn and be astonished...

I would think that even if (big if) a server is needed, it could be done anonymously without need to collect email and create an account.

Anyway I am uninstalling the extension until such time as there is a local-only mode. too bad, from the demo it seems neat.

mountainboy··on Show HN: I made a Chrome extension that can automate any website
hmm, I installed extension, clicked on "Get Started", allowed permissions, and am then presented with a signup/signin page and no way to skip it.

I just want to run some macros locally. Not interested in "cloud" anything unless its on a server that I control.

Questions/comments:

1. Will local functionality work without signup?

2. If so, then please consider a "Get Started" flow that makes this clear and does not require signup before giving any instruction/usage.

mountainboy··on Making a game to memorize facts about every country
Kinda fun.

A couple suggestions:

1. It would be great to add Capital Cities and perhaps population numbers also. And make each data-type optional. Eg, so that one could learn/quiz about Countries and Capital Cities only (no flags, location, or population) if desired.

2. The map needs to zoom in when showing a country. Sometimes I couldn't even see the country.

mountainboy··on Bitcoin Is a Ponzi Scheme
to the extent that they involve dishonesty/fraud, yes.

Arguably, when monetary supply increases are publicized, then there is no dishonesty, so not a ponzi scheme.

They have another component though: legal tender laws that force people to accept them for debts, and capital gains laws on other assets that give them an unfair advantage.

So ponzi or not -- probably not what the free market would choose in the absence of such laws.

mountainboy··on Bitcoin Is a Ponzi Scheme
This Ponzi scheme stuff was a tired argument 6 years ago.

Ponzi schemes have an element of dishonesty/fraud.

Bitcoin does not.

Find some new material.

mountainboy··on Grand mosaic of the Milky Way is now larger than ever
Question: What would it look like to be living on an electron, whizzing around a proton, inside a molecule, inside a living being?
mountainboy··on Countries are gathering in an effort to stop a biodiversity collapse
These countries should start by reading the book "The Invisible Rainbow: A history of electricity and life".
mountainboy··on Ethereum Services Are Centralized
Where I come from promising something, accepting people's money, and then reneging on the promise is considered unethical.
mountainboy··on Ethereum Services Are Centralized
not all of them. Hence the eth classic fork.

A majority of eth miners and users decided to change the rules and ignore the promises of immutability previously made to all.

Having a majority does not make an action ethical. Hence the term: tyranny of the majority.

This serious breach of faith soured many people on the project, and the mis-trust continues to this day.

mountainboy··on Key witness in Assange case jailed after admitting to lies and crime spree

I do not believe that your morals and mine are compatible.

mountainboy··on Beyond small talk: Study finds people enjoy deep conversations with strangers
Somehow I already knew this even without a "study". amazing.
mountainboy··on A New Theory Indicates Physical Reality Is Just Quantum Mirrors
as above, so below. It's turtles all the way down.

pretty sure it's not mirrors though.

mountainboy··on How does the economy work? A new Fed paper suggests nobody really knows
nobody really knows... pretty much what Mises, Hayek and other Austrian economists have been saying for 100+ years.

Fatal conceit anyone?

"The curious task of economics is to demonstrate to men how little they really know about what they imagine they can design. To the naive mind that can conceive of order only as the product of deliberate arrangement, it may seem absurd that in complex conditions order, and adaptation to the unknown, can be achieved more effectively by decentralizing decisions and that a division of authority will actually extend the possibility of overall order. Yet that decentralization actually leads to more information being taken into account." --F.A. Hayek

mountainboy··on The delights and the dangers of deplatforming extremists
I can't think of a time when censors were ever on the right side of history.

but hey, maybe this time is different!

/s

mountainboy··on The delights and the dangers of deplatforming extremists
de-platforming simply encourages new platforms to be built or adopted by the de-platformed, which in a way makes them stronger. it is short-sighted and long-term self-defeating. but hey censors gonna censor.
mountainboy··on Freqfs: In-memory filesystem cache for Rust

mountainboy··on DMV approves Cruise and Waymo for commercial service in parts of Bay Area
1. not get in the car in the first place. unless proven out by 10+ years of human guinea pigs not getting killed.

2. life experience, software expertise, common sense.

mountainboy··on DMV approves Cruise and Waymo for commercial service in parts of Bay Area

mountainboy··on Secret military aircraft possibly exposed on TikTok
looks like project winterhaven tech.
mountainboy··on Death of the Calorie (2019)
not surprising to me. fasting has many health benefits. I've experienced it for myself.

If interested, check out "The science of fasting" documentary.

mountainboy··on A search engine that favors text-heavy sites and punishes modern web design
For me, imdb was much better when they had user comments/discussion.

I never even posted on it myself, but browsing the discussions one could learn all sorts of trivia, inside info, speculation, etc about each movie.

Since they (inexplicably) killed that feature, I rarely even visit anymore. Your right, for many purposes wikipedia is better, especially for TV series episode lists with summaries.

mountainboy··on A from-scratch tour of Bitcoin in Python
respect.
mountainboy··on The Electrification of Everything
Induction stoves are the highest EMF polluting device in a typical household. In particular they emit a large magnetic field.

You can do what you want, but I'll stick with gas and a vent fan, thanks.

mountainboy··on The lab-leak theory: inside the fight to uncover Covid-19’s origins
People have been discussing a possible lab leak for well over a year. For the most part commenters here on hackernews have been close-minded, arrogant, dismissive and probably wrong. disgusting.

I don't actually care much about the lab leak hypothesis. So I don't have a dog in that particular fight. I think contagion itself is a myth. See the work of Dr. Tom Cowan if you are interested. I just don't like the arrogant attitude I see on display here all the time, on so many topics. People wielding beliefs, opinions, and "scientific consensus" as if they were facts, and there is nothing left to discover about biology or wider sciences.

Guess what people, human understanding of the natural world is moved forward by those who DO NOT AGREE with scientific consensus of the day. The heretics are the interesting ones to follow, not the rest of you lot.

I'm quite frankly glad to see a bunch of you eating crow right now. You should.

Good day
