moshegramovsky··on 2025 Tariff Impacts at Puget Systems
Right! Thank you for clarifying :)
moshegramovsky··on 2025 Tariff Impacts at Puget Systems
I see :)
moshegramovsky··on 2025 Tariff Impacts at Puget Systems
How does this help bring down prices?
moshegramovsky··on 2025 Tariff Impacts at Puget Systems
Very informative post. The author does an excellent job breaking down the costs by subsystem.

I am very surprised there are price increases though. The current administration said prices would start coming down on day 1. Doesn't seem like that's happening.

moshegramovsky··on Cottagecore Programmers
I don't know if I can agree with this. I am a programmer. I work with programmers and I know quite a few outside of work. Maybe three or four have expressed this wish, but not many.

There are a multitude of reasons why one might not like being a programmer, but most of them have nothing to do with programming itself. It's other people. Other engineers or managers or parasites. People who think antisocial behavior is okay, or worse, that it's the way to get ahead in life.

Toxic people make everything suck. I worked extremely hard to stop being even a little toxic. I wish more people would realize how their behavior affects others.

moshegramovsky··on Paxlovid: You'd have expected more
Sorry you got long covid. I hope you recover quickly!
moshegramovsky··on Paxlovid: You'd have expected more
The copays were pretty expensive! On the order of $400.00.
moshegramovsky··on Paxlovid: You'd have expected more
I definitely will take it again, no question. It worked really well for me. Side effects weren't too bad either.
moshegramovsky··on Paxlovid: You'd have expected more
Same. I had one night of fever and incredible chills. Thought for sure I was going to get very sick. Got Paxlovid next day. Felt better the following day. It was like having a cold, and I don't think that would have happened without the Paxlovid.
moshegramovsky··on Paxlovid: You'd have expected more
I have quite a bit of anecdata that Paxlovid works very well in helping very sick elderly people stay out of the hospital.
moshegramovsky··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney, who does work for YC and startups. AMA
The original comment talked about anti-immigrant sentiment of the new administration. Trump said that immigrants are poisoning the blood of our country. How many citations of Trump and his aides would it take to make you believe that they're anti-immigrant?

Yeah I had a Facebook account until today.

This whole thing copyright thing reminds me of when Mark Zuckerberg was mad that someone posted photos of the interior of his house or something.

moshegramovsky··on Israel, Hamas reach ceasefire deal to end 15 months of war in Gaza
I appreciate that you took the time to respond, but I think that analysis of the population of Gaza clearly shows that there hasn't be any ethnic cleansing either. The Palestinian population has been going up since 1948. So has life expectancy. These facts destroy the narrative of ethnic cleansing.

> For Israel this a racial problem, and whilst theyd prefer expulsion (like Hitler), theyre not above extermination (like Hitler) if the "dump them all in africa" project falls through.

Right, Israel doesn't want any Arabs within its borders. If there are any Arabs living in Israel they are there as a class of indentured servants who can't vote or serve in the government. Are there any Arabs in Israel?

I am personally sorry for what happened in Gaza, but Hamas chose to start a war and civilian deaths are an unavoidable fact of war. What would you want done if your family had been the victims of a barbaric, unprovoked attack, or if your family were kidnapped and taken from you?

And you're stating your opinion as if it were fact. You believe that no one on the left still supports Israel except if they are racist. That's just your opinion. It's not a fact. You believe that anyone who does support Israel is a racist. That's your opinion. It's not a fact.

You are definitely entitled to your opinion, but it's very telling that your opinion seems to deny and disregard quite a lot of facts.

> A side effect of this slaughter is that it has ripped off the mask of liberal, egalitarian Israel.

Is Israel a democracy? Can women vote in Israel? Can women serve in the army? Is it illegal to be gay in Israel? Can Israeli Arabs vote? Can they serve in parliament? Do they serve in parliament? What happens to gay men and women in Gaza and the West Bank? Why do they want to flee to Israel?

Again, you can have whatever opinion you want but the facts don't agree with you.

moshegramovsky··on Israel, Hamas reach ceasefire deal to end 15 months of war in Gaza
Israel's actions in the last 75 years simply cannot be compared to genocide in any rational sense of the word. The number of Palestinians has been rising steadily for decades and life expectancy for Palestinians has been increasing as well. Israel has not killed two million or three million or five million Palestinians.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_the_State_of_P...

Everything that happened since October 7th was avoidable. You can't expect to murder 1200 Israelis in this fashion and think nothing will happen. It would only invite more murders and more murders.

moshegramovsky··on Code reviews: A success story
The review you get depends what questions you ask. For example: I wrote a class that wrapped a std::vector<T> as a private data member and it pointed out that it would be nice if I implemented support for accessing the iterators and the array subscripts. It made these remarks based on how I was using the object. I have uploaded an entire repo to Gemini (as a single file) and asked for broad and fine reviews. It's really quite good.
moshegramovsky··on Code reviews: A success story
AI is pretty good at code reviews. For reference I use chatgpt and Gemini. It's very helpful.

An AI tool that could convert large scale changes into a set of small commits would be amazing.

moshegramovsky··on The Origins of Wokeness
Thank you for saying this.
moshegramovsky··on The Origins of Wokeness
White men hold almost all the power in America. I can't reconcile this fact with the idea that there is some conspiracy against white men. Can you provide some more context on what you mean?
moshegramovsky··on The Origins of Wokeness
Thank you for saying this.
moshegramovsky··on The Origins of Wokeness
What attracted me to it is the idea that sexism, racism, homophobia, etc. are forms of bullying that are definitively antisocial. At its core, it should be about stopping bullying at the level of individuals, society, and institutions.

And, despite being "pro woke" or whatever it should be called, I had my own lessons to learn: I had to learn to stop interrupting women. I had to learn that interrupting them was wrong and that it was a form of sexism that I needed to address.

moshegramovsky··on The Origins of Wokeness
Right, but the problem is that consequences for a cop shooting a black person for dating a white girl don't seem to be the same as the consequences for homicide.
moshegramovsky··on The Origins of Wokeness
Let me share the perspective I have as a member of a class of people that have been subject to racism for thousands of years, including enslavement, arbitrary murder, and systematic mass murder. Please forgive me, but being quiet didn't seem to work so far.

At least hundreds of thousands of polite, quiet, reasonable, assimilated urban Jews were murdered in the holocaust. It is deeply wrong that African Americans and other minorities or mentally ill people live in a world where the police can be every bit as dangerous as the gestapo. I feel like it's wrong that millions of women have been murdered simply for not doing something a man wanted. Millions or billions of women aren't treated as if they have the same value as men.

Please look at the bully pulpit standing against us. Most of the power in American society is concentrated in the hands of a very few white men. How loud do you think someone has to be when they have to stand against the megaphone of society? When someone needs to stand up against trillions of dollars in wealth?

Pretty loud as it turns out!

moshegramovsky··on The Origins of Wokeness
It's also a little suspect when a white man talks the degree to which racism (and by extension, sexism and homophobia) is a problem. The way he writes about it is such a casual dismissal that it sounds like gas lighting to me.

Has anyone ever referred to him with a racial epithet? Has he been stopped and frisked? Racially profiled? When was he last treated as if his ideas aren't as good because of his gender? Or passed up for a promotion for any of these reasons? Was he ever treated as if he is unworthy of marriage because he loves the wrong person? Has he worried about whether or not his name sounds a little too ethnic on his resume? Has he ever been called a dirty ____?

Among other things, including being called racial epithets, and worry about whether or not my name sounds a little too ethnic, I've had to listen to contemporary American politicians talk about how my ethnic group controls lasers from space.

But no, racism is not a problem on the scale that the woke believe it to be? It's easy to say that when you never experienced it.

moshegramovsky··on The Origins of Wokeness
How about removing the bullies from society.
moshegramovsky··on The Origins of Wokeness
Well said.

I've long believed that racism, sexism, homophobia are basically forms of bullying. All are antisocial behavior and quite bad for society. I endured near constant bullying for a lot of my early life, as well as sporadic racism.

When I hear the word woke, I think about people who are against this kind of behavior whether its conducted by an individual, a company, a society, or a government. But all the time I wish that people would just call it what is is: bullying.

It would be much more effective than calling people racist or homophobic or sexist.

moshegramovsky··on WordPress Is in Trouble
Well said.

I think Matt Mullenweg has every right to take the action he's taking. It really seems like many companies are perfectly happy to exploit open source products.

In this case, it seems like one company makes a lot of money using the Wordpress codebase and doesn't want to make equal contributions. Then they use the money they're making to turn around and sue Wordpress for standing up for themselves.

If I were Matt Mullenweg, you can bet I would be incensed! I'm honestly very surprised that Matt Mullenweg is facing such criticism when he's simply trying to protect IP that he and the community have spent a lot of time and money building together. It's only natural to want to ban the freeloaders, and in any case, it's a little outrageous to think anyone is entitled to access to the resources and creations of others with or without compensation.

moshegramovsky··on Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs
There are huge numbers of white, Indian, and Asian men working in tech. Why do you think white men are considered stale?
moshegramovsky··on How types make hard problems easy
In C++ you can make all kinds of easy problems much harder with C-style casts or static_cast.
moshegramovsky··on How types make hard problems easy
C++ guy here. I love being able to make a change and watch the compiler tell me what's broken. In the past year, I was able to justify large scale changes to a big codebase because I could say with confidence that the type system would reveal all. And it did.
