> This was something many many doctors originally claimed was completely safe.

I never heard any doctors claim any of the covid vaccines were completely safe. Do you mind if I ask which doctors, exactly? Not institutions, not vibes, not headlines. Individual doctors. Medicine is not a hive mind, and collapsing disagreement, uncertainty, and bad messaging into “many doctors” is doing rhetorical work that the evidence has to earn.

> The role of LLMs is they take the human bias out of the picture.

That is simply false. LLMs are trained on human writing, human incentives, and human errors. They can weaken certain authority and social pressures, which is valuable, but they do not escape bias. They average it. Sometimes that helps. Sometimes it produces very confident nonsense.

> Your post irked me because I almost got the sense that there’s a sort of prestige, admiration and respect given to doctors that in my opinion is unearned. Doctors in my opinion are like car mechanics and that’s the level of treatment they deserve.

> No one and I mean no one should trust the medical establishment or any doctor by default. They are like car mechanics and should be judged on a case by case basis.

You are entitled to that opinion, but I wanted to kiss the surgeon who removed my daughter’s gangrenous appendix. That reaction was not to their supposed prestige, it was recognition that someone applied years of hard won skill correctly at a moment where failure had permanent consequences.

Doctors make mistakes. Some are incompetent. Some are cynical. None of that justifies treating the entire profession as functionally equivalent to a trade whose failures usually cost money rather than lives.

And if doctors are car mechanics, then patients are machines. That framing strips the humanity from all of us. That is nihilism.

No one should trust doctors by default. Agreed. But no one should distrust them by default either. Judgment works when it is applied case by case, not when it is replaced with blanket contempt.

moshegramovsky··on Meta buried 'causal' evidence of social media harm, US court filings allege
Are you serious? People don't need religion to be moral. If what I see from religion these days is any indicator, I am extremely happy we kept our kids far far far away from it. From all of it. I will concede that not all religion is bad, but quite a lot of it is grift at best and cleverly disguised totalitarianism at worst. Many religious figures have absolutely no problem talking publicly about their "diety-given" right to dominate and control the lives of others for their own personal gain. I don't see how that fits inside any accepted definition of morality.

Does the author know if there are any plans for similar in Vulkan with 8-bit support for these types as well? I would put them to very good use.

It really makes me wonder why someone with that much wealth needs to go around making life worse for other people. At this point, it feels like a sickness.

It's interesting that the constitution prevents America from having a king, or at least it used to, but maybe the founders didn't think about other kinds of kings.

Because we're in a place, or we're getting to a place, where that's exactly what we have.

moshegramovsky··on Ask HN: Is your company forcing use of AI?
No, I use AI for initial reviews before I make a PR. It's excellent. Humans are still in the loop after that.
moshegramovsky··on Ask HN: Is your company forcing use of AI?
I use AI to review before a PR. Humans take it from there.

Quality far exceeds that of human reviews. It's becoming my favorite use case for AI.

moshegramovsky··on Ask HN: Is your company forcing use of AI?
Using Gemini Pro. No, I adopted it all on my own, but work pays. I love it, even though I can't use it on everything. Most developers here are using it, with approval on a per-projext basis.

Lately it's taken over code reviews, for myself and when I review other people's code. Extremely helpful. It's made software development fun again.

Cool work, but I have to say the performance is pretty bad in Firefox on my laptop with an Nvidia RTX A3000 GPU. There are enough shader cores here to cause first degree burns.

moshegramovsky··on OpenAI slams court order to save all ChatGPT logs, including deleted chats
Maybe a lawyer can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't understand why some people in the article appear to think that this is causing OpenAI to breach their privacy agreement.

The privacy agreement is a contract, not a law. A judge is well within their rights to issue such an order, and the privacy agreement doesn't matter at all if OpenAI has to do something to comply with a lawful order from a court of competent jurisdiction.

OpenAI are like the new Facebook when it comes to spin.

I have run into many of these types over the years. It's amazing to watch them run up their ladder of manipulative tactics until they realize that they aren't going to get what they want. Then you see who they really are. The whole problem is that being genuine matters.

The best boss I ever had never tried to be charismatic. He was a good listener, he was fair, and he took us seriously.

The Naploean Hill/Dale Carnegie types make my skin crawl.

moshegramovsky··on The NSF Is Being Dismantled
Trump destroys everything he touches. Especially capital. The guy is the living embodiment of Dunning-Kruger. Didn't he have six bankruptcies? He couldn't get a job sweeping floors at a bank with that track record. He is incompetent to run a grocery store, let alone the country, but he certainly is compentent at running things into the ground.

Your post proves my point quite exactly. Here you busy othering Jewish people by using language like "acting like you're the ones being persecuted". JEWISH PEOPLE ARE BEING PERSECUTED. I myself have been subject to anti-semitic treatment on/off throughout my entire life. I have been called the K word in the past. Current coworkers say things even though I am not even an Israeli citizen, and then are sure to add "of course Moshe we are not talking about you"...

I don't support what happened to Mahmoud Khalil. The Trump administration is evil. I might support Israel's right to exist, but I voted for Kamala because I support the US a hell of a lot more. None of the ordinary citizens of Israel or Palestine or the US is responsible for what's happening in Israel.

If you're not Jewish it might be a little difficult to understand. I know quite a few Jews who do not dare light a menorah in their window. Who don't dare fly an Israeli flag or identify themselves as Jews in any way. I am secular, but synagogues have to have armed security.

Jewish people != Israeli government.

By the way, Americans are absolutely safe traveling to Israel. You simple cannot say the same thing for almost any Arab country. Well, that's how Jews feel almost everywhere in the world.

moshegramovsky··on AI Coding assistants provide little value because a programmer's job is to think
It doesn't seem like the author has ever used AI to write code. You definitely can ask it to refactor. Both ChatGPT and Gemini have done excellent work for me on refactors, and they have also made mistakes. It seems like they are both quite good at making lengthy, high-quality suggestions about how to refactor code.

His argument about debugging is absolutely asinine. I use both GDB and Visual Studio at work. I hate Visual Studio except for the debugger. GDB is definitely better than nothing, but only just. I am way, way, way more productive debugging in Visual Studio.

Using a good debugger can absolutely help you understand the code better and faster. Sorry but that's true whether the author likes it or not.

A lot of what you refer to as "pandemic authoritarianism" took place under Trump as well. Vaccine mandates have been part of many jobs for years and years. It's not a Republican or Democrat thing.

Well said.

Hannah Arendt wrote a great book about this, but it sounds like you might have already read it.
