mortarion··on Appeasement at Munich
The EU has its own defense pact similar to NATO's Art.5, the Mutual Defense Clause. It was signed in 2009 (IIRC) to protect Greece from Turkish aggression, since Greece is in the EU, but Turkey is not.

"If a Member State is the victim of armed aggression on its territory, the other Member States shall have towards it an obligation of aid and assistance by all the means in their power, in accordance with Article 51 of the United Nations Charter."

Notice "by all the means in their power" which is different from Art.5. It basically means, that unless you're a officially a neutral nation, you are obliged to go to war.

mortarion··on Self hosted FLOSS fitness/workout tracker
Because hosting it on a server allows for automatic data entry via a mobile phone app?

No a lot of people would use fitness trackers if you manually had to enter all the information.

mortarion··on Undergraduate shows that searches within hash tables can be much faster
Because it's theoretical math and if you translate it to computer code it might actually be slower.

We've all but given up. Pessimism for the future is at an all time high and there's a major economic crisis looming on the horizon. We have runaway inflation and stagnant salaries, and for those who manage to mitigate inflation personally or via a union, by getting a salary increase, well they actually contribute to more inflation in general.

Why should I do my best when I'm underpaid. I'm sure many companies here in Europe wouldn't mind paying their employees more, but profit margins are razor thin.

There's no money for R&D.

IN the EU we have many of those and it's not a good thing.

Lawmakers also make and pass laws because it's their job, not because a new law is needed. They feel it's literally their job to come up with new bills to pass, for no reason other than "it's my job".

Imagine a society so stable it doesn't need new laws or rules. All the elected representatives would just sit around all day and twiddle their thumbs. A bad look in their eyes.

This is how it should be of course.

mortarion··on FlatBuffers: a memory efficient serialization library
I think you have maybe misunderstood the purpose of why flatbuffers exists; message packing for real time high performance games. It's not a replacement for Protocol Buffers or Cap'n Proto.

You've heard of Valve Software right? Their game engine, being a distant relative of Quake, used the old quake message packing format up until 1 or 2 years ago. Since then they have retrofitted all their popular games to use protocol buffers instead since it allows them to more easily extend their net code without breaking backwards compatibility (up to a point of course). In the context of games, optional fields are very important as are default values.

Also in this context; the author of flatbuffers is Wouter van Oortmerssen, author of the Cube and Cube2 game engines: http://sauerbraten.org

From the white paper:

> In particular, FlatBuffers focus is on mobile hardware (where memory size and memory bandwidth is even more constrained than on desktop hardware), and applications that have the highest performance needs: games.
