morshu9001··on I dumped Windows 11 for Linux, and you should too
Ubuntu, Mint, Debian lately. Tons of others before. bash shell

At some point Ubuntu had Gnome2 and only apt for packages, that made more sense than now

morshu9001··on I dumped Windows 11 for Linux, and you should too
I tried Linux again recently. Microsoft needs to be deleted, but this plan is still delusional. Linux is way too confusing for preventable reasons, not even talking about compatibility with Windows stuff.

I'm no Linux expert, but if a SWE has a hard time with it, can't imagine how an average person is supposed to use this. Yeah it's learnable, but nobody wants to. Come back when I can install Linux on a PC, not a "distro" but just Linux, no choices for random stuff like DEs unless you're an expert. And that's necessary, not sufficient.

morshu9001··on I dumped Windows 11 for Linux, and you should too
Pick any distro and it'll still have at least 3 ways to install software. Might also have 2 window systems and 4 DEs.
morshu9001··on I dumped Windows 11 for Linux, and you should too
The confusion is a problem for nearly every use case. They don't even seem to be converging on things, it's getting worse.
morshu9001··on I replaced Windows with Linux and everything's going great
Android is Linux. There could easily be a secure-boot desktop Linux too if companies cared to target that platform with things like banking apps.
morshu9001··on I replaced Windows with Linux and everything's going great
Was going to say, the online help always baits you into using OpenJDK which doesn't work for random stuff, or in older times there was those non-default "non free" repos you needed to add if you wanted wifi to work.
morshu9001··on How Markdown took over the world
They don't though. Newline in the input doesn't create a newline in the output.
morshu9001··on How Markdown took over the world
IMO JS and its spinoffs made mostly the best choices for an interpreted language. The bad parts are pretty inconsequential, and the good parts are important things other langs didn't do well. Even Rust took after how it does async and package management.

Better than Python which also recently started copying over JS decisions, except that Py was easier to use with C libs from the start which made it capture math/data/science usage earlier.

morshu9001··on How Markdown took over the world
My "worse is better" is using plain text instead of markdown. I still have no idea how newlines work in markdown.
morshu9001··on RTX 5090 and Raspberry Pi: Can it game?
I've only ever played Skyrim on a 2009 13" MacBook Pro in Wine. It took like 30min to load and ran at like 4fps. But I didn't play past the first area.

Wasn't AoE1 released for PPC Mac natively? AoE2 was probably the best Mac game ever.

morshu9001··on The Vietnam government has banned rooted phones from using any banking app
What's the alternative that regular people will understand how to use and not get locked out of?
morshu9001··on The Vietnam government has banned rooted phones from using any banking app
I saw lots of Singapore traffic back in the early 2010s too, and often see it listed on random free VPN and proxy sites
morshu9001··on The Vietnam government has banned rooted phones from using any banking app
Also even if they aren't hijacked devices, any kind of phone farm is harder to run with locked down devices.
morshu9001··on “Stop Designing Languages. Write Libraries Instead” (2016)
Ok I can see that. Like I already banned all European car brands.

When I was running a home server as a kid, I IP-blocked the entire continent of Asia because I was constantly getting pings, portscans, HTTP path guesses, SSH auth attempts, etc randomly from there. Of course I secured my stuff to the best of my knowledge, but I still didn't want that harassment cause 1. who knows 2. could be ddos'd.

When finding help on how to do this, people were saying it's useless cause they can proxy/VPN anyway, but obviously that has some cost to them because they weren't doing that. So seeing how I had no legitimate traffic from there, it was an easy choice and cut out like 99% of abuse.

morshu9001··on The Vietnam government has banned rooted phones from using any banking app
I already willingly do this with browsers. Firefox gets maximum adblocking and other extensions, Safari gets to touch my bank.
morshu9001··on “Stop Designing Languages. Write Libraries Instead” (2016)
Usually someone is stopping you, unless this is a hobby project. At least Scala can use Java libs so you aren't stopped by stuff not being available for it. But yeah I would never use it.
morshu9001··on “Stop Designing Languages. Write Libraries Instead” (2016)
Doesn't seem fuzzy to me. JSON parser is a lib.
morshu9001··on “Stop Designing Languages. Write Libraries Instead” (2016)
Admittedly, Ruby on Rails makes me think "bootcamp" like you said, and I barely even know what it is.

But shouldn't the check just be that the candidate has used more than one different stack? It's pretty hard for anyone with real experience to stick to one, and even if they do, that's not a good sign either. Or are you saying those bootcamp people end up learning another stack but still not being very good?

Probably the other person's boss was hiring for some generalist role and not a specific thing like low-level ML.
morshu9001··on “Stop Designing Languages. Write Libraries Instead” (2016)
In pretty common applications, virtual threads will make the difference between chaining futures (this.then(that).then(...)) vs not, all throughout your code. Or some frameworks had far uglier ways to deal with cooperative multitasking.
morshu9001··on “Stop Designing Languages. Write Libraries Instead” (2016)
C++ was how I'd describe it, too many different ways to do simple things. I guess Java++
morshu9001··on Polymarket refuses to pay bets that US would 'invade' Venezuela
Yes but that's all future tense
morshu9001··on Polymarket refuses to pay bets that US would 'invade' Venezuela
Maybe I don't understand it enough, but I don't see how it's hard at all to manipulate this with a lot of money. Buy a lot of the wrong resolution, and all the other individuals will be too afraid to buy the right one.
morshu9001··on Polymarket refuses to pay bets that US would 'invade' Venezuela
The creator of the event doesn't resolve it, I thought
morshu9001··on Polymarket refuses to pay bets that US would 'invade' Venezuela
It does mention land too. Could be more explicit, but the intent seems clear enough.
morshu9001··on US will ban Wall Street investors from buying single-family homes
Maybe if they keep buying the houses in the top school district of the entire city. Which I've never heard of anyone doing.

Maybe easier to just form a realtor cartel?

morshu9001··on US will ban Wall Street investors from buying single-family homes
This suggests that a single-family home is generally a bad investment. Maybe not if you're living in the house yourself (no renter-landlord inefficiency), but still idk. Could make more sense in certain areas where all the value is in the land.
morshu9001··on “Stop Designing Languages. Write Libraries Instead” (2016)
Kinda now that Java has lambdas, but still async in that disn't work as easily as JS, which is important. This is only recently starting to change with Project Loom.
morshu9001··on Sugar industry influenced researchers and blamed fat for CVD (2016)
Yeah, I completely reject nutritional science. Even without bribes involved, there are just too many complexities for them to draw useful conclusions. Ignored the food pyramid too.
