morshu9001··on Microsoft will give the FBI a Windows PC data encryption key if ordered
How do you avoid losing that key?
morshu9001··on Microsoft gave FBI set of BitLocker encryption keys to unlock suspects' laptops
Doesn't sound like it tells you now that it's default, but I'll see what it says next time. If they make the key-sharing clear and make it easy to disable, then it's fine.
morshu9001··on Microsoft gave FBI set of BitLocker encryption keys to unlock suspects' laptops
That's not the point. Microsoft shouldn't be silently taking your encryption key in the first place. The law doesn't compel them to do that.
morshu9001··on Microsoft gave FBI set of BitLocker encryption keys to unlock suspects' laptops
The problem is they don't make this clear to the user or make it easy to opt out. Contrast with how Apple does it.
morshu9001··on Are arrays functions?
At this point I look at a painting and think, they should've used JS
morshu9001··on Are arrays functions?
There are some appealing-sounding arguments for designing languages around functions. Having given this a very fair shot with things like Erlang... turns out this optimizes for rare use cases at the expense of common ones. There's no 100% general-purpose language, they all have use cases in mind, and I guess some people are still trying to find a way around that.

Similar conclusion for using a graph DB for something you'd typically do in a relational DB. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

morshu9001··on Are arrays functions?
Right, and you can also consider a function to be a vector.
morshu9001··on Apple testing new App Store design that blurs the line between ads and results
Google had sponsored links for as long as I knew about it, at least 2000. That section was at the top back then and is like that today, but there were times it was only on the right side.
morshu9001··on Apple testing new App Store design that blurs the line between ads and results
Finder has always been the weakest part of Mac OS for some reason. The one UI that Windows beat them on.
morshu9001··on Apple testing new App Store design that blurs the line between ads and results
> That's the exact kind of attitude

Apparently not though, I saw it said ad. Maybe you missed it because you were focused on the wall of text instead of the UI.

morshu9001··on Porsche sold more electrified cars in Europe in 2025 than pure gas-powered cars
I would define car enthusiast as someone who at least knows how many cylinders. For the purpose of the EV discussion, the people who don't know that aren't the people who want an ICE.
morshu9001··on Porsche sold more electrified cars in Europe in 2025 than pure gas-powered cars
A lot of them are those mini SUVs like the CR-V. The thing about that list is it's grouped by model, and the share of non-trucks is more fragmented.
morshu9001··on Apple testing new App Store design that blurs the line between ads and results
For sure it seems intentional. I wonder if they used to be more afraid of the FTC.
morshu9001··on Porsche sold more electrified cars in Europe in 2025 than pure gas-powered cars
Not that many Americans are car enthusiasts. The most popular cars have been basic commuters for decades.
morshu9001··on Apple testing new App Store design that blurs the line between ads and results
I wasn't there to read the text, the screenshots say everything. Thought I was looking at the wrong pic cause it seemed obvious.
morshu9001··on Apple testing new App Store design that blurs the line between ads and results
They still don't want users to leave. Yeah they can get away with stuff like removing the jack or being slightly annoying about iCloud, but things would be way worse if they didn't care at all.
morshu9001··on Apple testing new App Store design that blurs the line between ads and results
I read the title then looked at the screenshots and thought what? It still says "ad."
morshu9001··on Prediction markets are ushering in a world in which news becomes about gambling
I'll try that one. Last time was frantic and tried like 5 bad sites before finding at least where the plane was.

But maybe the passengers or crew on that plane had a better idea of why they were delayed, which I'm not sure any site would show. I've been on the other end too, knowing my plane isn't taking off due to a jammed door and texting updates to someone who was supposed to pick me up on the other end.

morshu9001··on Prediction markets are ushering in a world in which news becomes about gambling
Do you mean the kind that pays for cancellations? The scenario I'm sometimes in is the flight is delayed, I can switch for free anyway, but I don't want to have to wait a whole day or something. So it becomes a game of, stick with current flight or switch, and which one do I switch to.
morshu9001··on Prediction markets are ushering in a world in which news becomes about gambling
Part of me wishes there were prediction markets for flight delays. The ETAs are wildly inaccurate, like last time the counter staff suggested I not reschedule cause our plane was arriving in 15min, when I could see on a slightly hard to find site that the plane was still grounded 500mi away.

Part of me is careful what I wish for, starting with passengers bothering staff even more.

morshu9001··on If you put Apple icons in reverse it looks like someone getting good at design
The old ones are easier to differentiate too
morshu9001··on If you put Apple icons in reverse it looks like someone getting good at design
Snow Leopard was right about everything
morshu9001··on If you put Apple icons in reverse it looks like someone getting good at design
The first comment was about app icons. Nobody is suggesting putting confusing buttons in an app UI.
morshu9001··on US electricity demand surged in 2025 – solar handled 61% of it
Gonna fully admit I skipped reading the article when I saw a confusing title, and now I'm leaving instead of trying to figure out what it meant.
morshu9001··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
Yeah so you can give them all that, but if it's mainly inhabited by single "professionals" and couples with dogs, it can still be antisocial. At least that was my experience in grad school housing and living after in college towns. We had walking/biking centric layout, communal gyms and hot tubs, everything.
morshu9001··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
Yeah, I go to church but would definitely not do that if I didn't believe in it and weren't considering it. Likewise I don't go to a synagogue.
morshu9001··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
Dense cities have the same problem or worse. There are even college towns with apartments where nobody talks to each other.
morshu9001··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
Unlike the supposedly golden 1950s, a lot of people today were adults before and after the 2010s and would say similar things comparing the two.
morshu9001··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
Church is a big thing though, it's weekly and not some hobby or niche. Like I've moved more often than I kinda wanted to, and each time instantly started hanging out with friends I met after church, even though I wasn't going there to meet people.
morshu9001··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
Yeah, life isn't one of those "old single friends living together" sitcoms. Most interaction is with family, anything else is more of a bonus that can't be relied on.

There are also plenty of cultures with family values not rooted in religion.
