morgengold··on White House alters arrest photo of ICE protester, says "the memes will continue"
Yes, extremely tricky. Imo the current ruling class just needs to mess up just on thing, because there is a deep underlaying discontent with the subjectively felt way of living in our modern societies. So housing / migrants are just the spark.

If we (Europe) are not careful, we will have to find out this pretty soon again.
morgengold··on On Being a Human Being in the Time of Collapse (2022) [pdf]
What if we do not fight back because deep down we hate the current state of affairs? So why fighting to preserve this?
morgengold··on Are we tired of social media? (2025)
I would like to find a way out and often thought about starting a community / movement around this. Maybe this step feels easier collectively.
morgengold··on The unbearable joy of sitting alone in a café
Isn't it astonishing how much happier the author / most of us could be without our phones?
morgengold··on List of domains censored by German ISPs
I found nice soccer streams thanks to that list I never would have been able to find otherwise.
morgengold··on Rich Hickey: Thanks AI
AI slop is a big problem. At the same time AI does some things pretty well (proofreading, translation, finding bugs, sum ups ...)
morgengold··on Willison on Merchant's "Copywriters reveal how AI has decimated their industry"
Do you mind sketching out the basic idea how to eliminate the change of currency for food? Sounds interesting.
morgengold··on Australia begins enforcing world-first teen social media ban
I am so glad a country finally took action. Can't wait to see data on its effects. At this point in time I lost interest in nuanced discussions about the details here. We are in one big experiment and it might end in catastrophy. We need counter experiments and hard data fast.
morgengold··on Australia begins enforcing world-first teen social media ban
There will definitely be hellish withdrawal symptoms.

What's so difficult to understand about LLMs? The meaning of intelligence is irrelevant. I like to call LLMs Associators. No they don't think and they don't understand. But it turns out by finding patterns and associate them on the basis of symbolic language, there comes up some useful stuff in some areas.
morgengold··on Why Speed Matters
The real skill is to know when speed is the way to go and when taking your time is the better strategy.
morgengold··on We gave 5 LLMs $100K to trade stocks for 8 months
Am I right that you let LLMs decide for themselves what to read into their input data (like market data, news APIs, company financials)? While this is worth testing, I think it would be more interesting to give them patterns to look for. I played around with using them for technical analysis and let them make the associations with past stock performances. They can even differentiate on what worked in the last 5 years, what in the last year, in the last 3 month etc. This way they can pick up (hopefully) changes in market behavior. Generally the main strength of this approach is to use their pattern recognition capability and also take out the human factor (emotions) for trading decitions.
morgengold··on We're losing our voice to LLMs
First we need to think about why we consume content? I am happy to read llm created stuff when I need to know sth and it delivers 100%. Other reasons like "get perspectives of real humans", or "resonate" ... not so much
morgengold··on Claude Opus 4.5
I'm on a Claude Code Max subscription. Last days have been a struggle with Sonnet 4.5 - Now it switched to Claude Opus 4.5 as default model. Ridiculous good and fast.
morgengold··on Ultra-processed food linked to harm in every major human organ, study finds
Then have fun eating your popcorn without sugar or salt :)
morgengold··on James Watson has died
thanks graemep andand patall for taking the time. It is amazing to see a man of high intelligence like Watson is not able to base is views on the evidence.

For me, I work usally with the assumption: "Even if there existed small differences IQ between races explained by genetics, it never tells you something about the individual before you."

Would you say this is a valid belief?

morgengold··on James Watson has died
Is someone able to tell me what about the genetics, race and IQ stuff is backed by evidence and what part is pure prejudice?
morgengold··on A definition of AGI
Why do we even want to have human intelligence? It's flawed and limited in so many ways. Most of its magic is there because it cares about its host.
morgengold··on Intermittent fasting correlated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease
Correlation vs Causation.
morgengold··on Pentagon Docs: US Wants to "Suppress Dissenting Arguments" Using AI Propaganda
I think we head in a direction where people will not trust digital content altogether. The question is what will happen thereafter? What are new and reliable trust indicators?
morgengold··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (June 2025)
Love the idea!
morgengold··on The Death of Daydreaming
I often wonder how much creative productivity is lost on a societal level because of the phone addiction.

I often wonder if we would focus politically on different topics.

I often wonder if I would procrastinate less in the real world and face important decisions much faster.

morgengold··on As an experienced LLM user, I don't use generative LLMs often
... but when I do, I let it write regex, SQL commands, simple/complex if else stuff, apply tailwind classes, feed it my console log errors, propose frontend designs ... and other little stuff. Saves brain power for the complex problems.

morgengold··on Tesla suffers worst quarter since 2022 as deliveries tumble
Speaking of COVID. There is a weird story about Musk betting $1 million dollars on low death cases of COVID against his former friend Sam Harris.

After Elon was spectacularly wrong he just canceled the friendship. Also forgot to pay the $1 million dollars.

morgengold··on How Many School Shootings? All Incidents from 1966-Present
No one knows for sure, but if I take the perspective of a socially alienated young person who is angry, resentful, and feels a growing desire for revenge, I would say hours of screen time, social media dynamics [1], and widespread economic insecurities only worsen the situation. It is easy to become resentful and aggressive when you are isolated and feel left behind. Additionally, it is much easier to become radicalized as an isolated individual online. I believe that in the last century, it was more difficult to become radicalized from your own bedroom, and people had more social interactions, even if they weren't actively seeking them out.

[1] Anxiety surges in GenZ around its introduction: https://jonathanhaidt.com/social-media/

morgengold··on Nobody Cares
I tend to agree with the author. But then, look around: a lot of stuff works really really well.
morgengold··on Australian Parliament bans social media for under-16s
I like this very much. Why?

1. Life long habits are mostly formed at a young age.

2. Real social interaction is very important at this life stage.

3. There is no need to put the vulnerable self concept of a young human being at risk.

morgengold··on Weight-loss drug found to shrink muscle in mice, human cells
The body breaks down some muscle tissue beacause it can make glucose from by gluconeogenesis. You need about at least 80 g glucose or so per day (brain), even if you do not eat any carbohydrates. The body cannot make glucose from fat.
