morepork··on The UK is wasting a lot of wind power
There is a lot more wind power than there used to be. Getting wind farms consented is hard because people always seem to come out of the woodwork and complain and ruining the scenery, or the noise, or whatever.

But I think the bigger issue is that due to the amount of wind that has already been built, peak demand happens on cold still nights in winter. Building more wind without storage doesn't help there, and that's when they're forced to fire up all the gas and even coal turbines at Huntly.

morepork··on The UK is wasting a lot of wind power
Assuming a competitive market, the outcome is essentially the same right? If the government builds more than would be economic for a private company they're paying the extra through construction costs/maintenance/financing that they would have been paying to incentivise the extra turbines.

morepork··on Could Dissolvable Cranberry Film Replace Plastic Packaging Someday?
Glass is incredible carbon intensive to make, and takes practically forever to break down. It's also fragile.
morepork··on Could Dissolvable Cranberry Film Replace Plastic Packaging Someday?
The bars wouldn't be exposed to air, that's what edible wraps like what is described in the article are for.

For backpacks and the like you will need something else to keep it clean, same as you would for an apple. May I present to you the lunch box, already used by 100s of millions.

morepork··on Could Dissolvable Cranberry Film Replace Plastic Packaging Someday?
I think the idea is that it becomes like fruit and vegetables. You purchase them unwrapped, wash them, and eat them. This would have implications on the supply chain of course to try and keep these items clean.

It could also replace individually wrapped items, such as in a box of cereal bars the individual bars wouldn't need plastic wrap.

morepork··on What if we talked about over-60s’ screen time as we talk about young people’s?
What is your definition of a wasted life? It's bound to be different from the next person.

Food is made to be eaten, that is its purpose. So it's clear what wasted food is.

What is the purpose of a human life? There is no universal answer, hence no universal way to define what is a wasted life.

morepork··on What if we talked about over-60s’ screen time as we talk about young people’s?
I don't think it's fair to judge what is a "waste of life" or not. What one wants to do with their own life is a subjective thing. Each have their own interests, comfort zones, and personal struggles that they have to deal with.

morepork··on Sugar Substitutes Surprise
HFCS isn't particularly high in fructose. Sucrose is essentially 1:1 fructose to glucose. HFCS is typically either 42% or 55% fructose, the rest glucose, so basically the same. Honey and agave nectar are also similar.

I can't say I'm an expert, but I haven't seen anything where consuming fructose is worse overall than other sugars. Fruits for example also tend to be high in fructose, and if you're going to have sugars they tend to be one of the best ways.

morepork··on Sugar Substitutes Surprise
Fructose is about 50% sweeter than sugar (sucrose), so you can save calories by substituting 2/3 of the quantity of sucrose with fructose

You still need to pipe through base64, i.e.

head -c 1024 /dev/urandom | base64

morepork··on The cult of dd (2017)
I find head easier for these, replace the first part of your commands with

head -c 1024 < /dev/urandom

morepork··on The State of AV1 Playback Support
I mean maybe? But does that matter? It's by far the highest efficiency (in terms of bandwidth) open codec out there. It takes a lot of money to develop these sorts of things, especially given the patent risk, so I'm not sure how else you'd expect something like this to be created.

Netflix and Facebook were also early adopters of this. Between Google (Youtube), Facebook (various) and Netflix you have three of the biggest content providers. Other big ones like iQiyi and Vimeo jumped on it pretty quickly too.

I'm sorry, we lost millions of dollars due to an exploit.

morepork··on Google is shutting down Stadia
Obligatory: https://xkcd.com/1361/

There are 2 classes of product that I don't see them shutting down.

1. Those that make lots of money, e.g. search, youtube, maps. Unless that changes of course.

2. Those that are heavily used internally at Google, e.g. gmail, docs, calendar. They are always going to want those as internal tools. I guess they could make them internal only, but how much more work is it to maintain the public version too given it already exists?

morepork··on CA grid: real-time status
I wonder how much the peak could be reduced by intentionally cooling houses lower than normal (say to 18 C / 65 F) before the demand peak, e.g. from 3pm - 5:30pm so that you don't need to use as much AC right when you get home and solar is waning. Essentially using the thermal mass of your house as a battery

morepork··on Is there hope for Linux on smartphones? [video]
Android runs toybox (or at least used to), which implements many of the GNU tools. But I think the complaint is that much of the userland to have a useful phone experience is proprietary.

If you could install all the GNU tools into AOSP Linux (probably not that hard), you still don't have a useful phone.

It's not even the desktop environment (think GNOME/KDE/etc.), as there is a good enough version in AOSP.

morepork··on Is there hope for Linux on smartphones? [video]
I don't know if things have changed, but you definitely used to be able to install AOSP on some phones, the Nexus line were typically the easiest.
morepork··on Is there hope for Linux on smartphones? [video]
You can still have a useful experience on a pure AOSP build.

You'll miss features like push notifications, Google accounts outside of the browser, an app store and various other features.

But there's no reason the open source community couldn't add these, a package repo/app store equivalent and push messaging would probably be the deal breakers for me as a phone where chat apps don't work isn't useful to me.

The binary blobs to get driver support are also a problem, but it's also true in desktop linux, see for example Nvidia's graphics card driver.

morepork··on Is there hope for Linux on smartphones? [video]
No it's not, AOSP is developed in the open. Directed by Google sure, but not just a code drop every release.

For a fair comparison, you'd have to know how big the engine and fuel tanks are in relation to the batteries and electric motors.
