moosingin3space··on Legacy extensions disabled by default on Firefox Nightly 57 starting August 11
They won't. This is a necessary move in the Quantum push. Can't expose the browser's internal API (like XUL extensions) and put it through a big refactor.
moosingin3space··on Tilix: A tiling terminal emulator
Terminator has not been updated in 9 years, suggesting a lack of maintenance, and is stuck on GTK2, which means no native Wayland support. Tilix, on the other hand, is active, GTK3-based, and works natively on my Gnome Wayland desktop.
moosingin3space··on uBlock Origin Maintainer on Chrome vs. Firefox WebExtensions
Also keep in mind that Mozilla is researching better rendering methods through the Quantum project. The potential boost will be huge -- CSS styling and compositing will be faster, JS code that interacts with the DOM will be faster, etc.

I'm very excited about Quantum CSS and Quantum DOM landing.

moosingin3space··on WebAssembly: A New Hope
Chrome's PDF reader is actually open-source: https://pdfium.googlesource.com/pdfium/
moosingin3space··on Atom 1.19 – Improved Responsiveness and Memory Usage
Honestly I'm a little curious about whether compiling it to WebAssembly would have offered similar benefits. If so, that would make writing performance-critical parts of Electron apps in another language a more approachable proposition.
moosingin3space··on Linux Load Averages: Solving the Mystery
I've always seen POLA as "principle of least authority" in an OS research context, just fyi.
moosingin3space··on Javascript Arrays and Functional Programming
With lazy iterators, there is the possibility of better composition of maps/filters/reduces. That's why I'm a fan of the lazy iterators approach -- otherwise the abstraction breaks too easily and it ends up looking like a for-loop anyway.
moosingin3space··on Stackblitz – Online VS Code Editor for Angular and React
The performance here was quite good! I'm impressed.
moosingin3space··on Encode state transitions in types using linear types
> how one could partially tack on borrowing semantics to a non-linear/affine language

How might that look if you tried to do this in, say a (not compatible with C) C-like language? I thought the ownership system (affine types) was required for the borrow checker to work.

moosingin3space··on Encode state transitions in types using linear types
Would it be correct to say that the affine type system underlies the ownership paradigm?
moosingin3space··on Javascript Arrays and Functional Programming
The problem with this is that it generates two intermediate arrays in the maps, then effectively drops them in the reduce. This may be inefficient.

I wish that JavaScript's map/filter/reduce functions returned lazy iterators, like in Rust, so that code like this doesn't produce intermediate arrays. Does anyone know of a library that provides this?

moosingin3space··on Encode state transitions in types using linear types
Exactly what you said -- it's not possible to make something that must be used exactly once. See https://gankro.github.io/blah/linear-rust/ for a deeper explanation.
moosingin3space··on Encode state transitions in types using linear types
Rust uses a similar (but significantly weaker) system called "affine types" underlying its borrow checker.
moosingin3space··on How I implemented my own crypto
TLS != crypto. TLS is actually very well-suited for a higher-level language like Rust or OCaml, especially due to how state machine patterns can be expressed safely in those languages. Crypto, on the other hand, often relies on low-level intrinsics to get good performance and cache timing attack resistance.
moosingin3space··on App sizes are out of control
Thanks for indicating lyon, that looks very nice. I mentioned Pathfinder because path rendering on GPU is important on mobile devices (battery and heat concerns).
moosingin3space··on App sizes are out of control
pcwalton's project Pathfinder (https://github.com/pcwalton/pathfinder) may eventually lead to an efficient GPU-based vector renderer, which would make this feasible.
moosingin3space··on Rust: Not So Great For Codec Implementing
I've found that using Linux tools like perf work well for profiling Rust, since it's compatible with C.
moosingin3space··on Google’s native ad blocker for Chrome shows up in Android developer build
From my look at the Focus source, it's not Webkit/Blink on Android.
moosingin3space··on Google’s native ad blocker for Chrome shows up in Android developer build
Just did a scan of the Focus source and I don't see it using the native Android webview -- it appears to use Gecko.
moosingin3space··on Can QML become the next standard for web UI?
React/Vuejs components are declarative UI at their core. That idea tends to get lost in the soup that is state management, but it is there.

The easiest-to-integrate React/Vuejs components are very close to purely declarative, in my experience.

moosingin3space··on GitHub was down
Really? I was under the impression that most language package managers downloaded from a CDN. I know that pip, npm, yarn, cargo, and hex do, at least.
moosingin3space··on Dell XPS 15 9560 Review
Fractional scaling is in the works for the next Gnome release. I've been using the former case, so that's why I said it works well for me.
moosingin3space··on Dell XPS 15 9560 Review
On Fedora 26 with Wayland, high-DPI works pretty well in my experience.
moosingin3space··on CMake Announcement from Boost Steering Committee
While bazel and buck look great for building Google/Facebook-sized codebases, meson looks great for what most of our projects are.
moosingin3space··on GNU Ring 1.0 released
A decentralized key-value store that is tolerant to an active adversary is not a "very simple problem". A block-chain is actually a reasonable solution for this, see [1].

Not to say it's perfect, for sure.

moosingin3space··on Slack Is Raising $250M from SoftBank, Others
Yes, large distributed groups where people can drop in/drop out is IRC's niche, and why it will never die. I prefer IRC for large open-source projects to Slack, but the usability is awful for a company environment. At my school, we use Slack for research groups, study groups, and student project teams, and it's excellent for that.
moosingin3space··on Ask HN: Ubuntu Desktop Default Apps
There is a Gnome calendar app: https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Calendar.
moosingin3space··on Ask HN: Ubuntu Desktop Default Apps
IIRC, mpv already has native Wayland support, whereas VLC's was lacking. gnome-mpv is pretty nice, though.
moosingin3space··on Ask HN: When has switching the language/framework made an important difference?
Made my personal website with nuxt. The tools are excellent -- it was so easy to integrate PostCSS, Pug, and TypeScript into the site.
moosingin3space··on DCompute: GPGPU with Native D for OpenCL and CUDA
Is there any discussion about doing this in Rust? (maybe surrounding the SIMD RFCs)
