moondev··on Don't throw away your old PC–it makes a better NAS than anything you can buy
> They check all the boxes for server / NAS

I was pretty disappointed to find out that none of the ms-01 ms-a1 or ms-a2 have a ATX power button header. This means you need to solder wires to the tiny tactile switch and connect those to something like a pi-kvm to get true power control/status and ipmi/redfish

Just seems like something simple they could have easily included if they wanted to really target the homelab space

moondev··on Same-day upstream Linux support for Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5
My microcenter has nvidia OEM flavor in stock. There are also flavors from all the other OEMs that differ slightly on cooling but mainly on chassis design.
moondev··on Same-day upstream Linux support for Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5
Get a DGX spark.

Ships with aarch64 Ubuntu 24.04.

Tons of cores and RAM.

Very quiet and small

UEFI bootloader - I installed Ubuntu 25.10 and ESXi arm edition just by booting the ISO

usb-c power input (kinda cool)

Insane connectx 200GbE RoCE networking

10GbE Ethernet

Oh and an nvidia gpu with cuda and access to 128GB of unified memory

It would be perfect if it had some kind of BMC or IPMI/redfish and an exposed PCIE slot. But this thing is an awesome arm64 workstation no doubt.

May try to install to a USB drive and hang another gpu off the nvme port just to see what happens

moondev··on Bluetui – A TUI for managing Bluetooth on Linux
I can't remember where I heard it, but somebody said all Linux distributions are essentially you inheriting someone(s) mess in a way.
moondev··on Movycat – A terminal movie player written in Zig
> (Excerpt from the 64k Demo "Universal Sequence" from the amazing demo group "Conspiracy")

First time I have seen this. Incredible music and intense gfx all packaged under 64k? Impressive as hell.

moondev··on Nvidia DGX Spark: When benchmark numbers meet production reality
Can we agree that 10 minute boot time is not fun?
moondev··on Ubuntu Unity in Need of More Developers to Survive
This is a great idea.

The Unity project matters to me so I am formally allocating aborsy to work on it.

moondev··on Nvidia DGX Spark: When benchmark numbers meet production reality
Sure what I mean is a physical monitor is more fun than a virtual console.

Curious though how you offer idrac to customer, do you have another OOB BMC for the idrac? Or is this internal engineering context

moondev··on Nvidia DGX Spark: When benchmark numbers meet production reality
You can't attach a monitor to a h100, it has no video out.

Even ignoring GPU details spark is an awesome little quiet powerhouse arm64 workstation that is 100% Linux first

moondev··on What I Self Host
Is the infrastructure immutable or artisanal.
moondev··on K8s with 1M nodes
Upstream kubernetes literally requires etcd. Anything that changes that is a fork

Not with Mac studio(s), but yes multi host NCCL over RoCE with two DGX Sparks or over PCI with one

moondev··on NVIDIA DGX Spark In-Depth Review: A New Standard for Local AI Inference
Just don't try to run a NCCL
moondev··on WinBoat: Windows apps on Linux with seamless integration
I really like it actually. It's a powerhouse with 64G RAM and NVME.

Crostini and Android apps make it really versatile. I run the dev channel and there are all kinds of interesting features and experiments to play with. Arch instead of Debian for crostini.

Was really disappointed when framework discontinued it, but it seems like chromeos is converging into Android.

The flip side is that we now have crostini for Android. Chromeos android subsystem has not been updated to be able run it if you are wondering, heh.

moondev··on WinBoat: Windows apps on Linux with seamless integration
quickemu makes it pretty easy to launch macOS on kvm. I was able to launch it on my framework chromebook from the Linux terminal
moondev··on Pop OS 24.04 LTS Beta
The killer feature of Pop for me is nvidia drivers baked into the live ISO. Live boot to nvidia-smi without touching the disk is really handy.

moondev··on As Android developer verification gets ready to go, a new reason to be worried
In the newest android there is now an option to enable a "Linux development environment" AKA crostini for Android.

It works the same way, there is a Linux terminal application that runs Debian inside a VM. They recently added a button to launch a display window. This then functions as your "monitor" and applications you launch that provide a GUI display there.

Still experimenting with it not clear if you can launch android inside that with waydroid or similar

moondev··on KDE is now my favorite desktop
For a second I thought this was submitted by DHH and I was ready to grab some popcorn.
moondev··on Murex – An intuitive and content aware shell for a modern command line

moondev··on With AI Boom, Dell's Datacenter Biz Is Finally Bigger Than Its PC Biz
To me the OOB/BMC interface of the server is the main tangible difference not the support contract implementation.

IDRAC is miles ahead of SMC/MEGARAC. It's not even close.

moondev··on I Bought an N100 Mini PC, Then Another
We should start a support group. I bought 6 minisforum s100. Each one has 4 cores 8G mem and 256 GB uds.

The kicker is that they each have 2.5GbE Ethernet with POE! This allows me to power control them by power cycling the switch port.

I then have a webhook that gets hit from MAAS. They pxe and get provisioned with an os image, the same images also work on large real servers, so this is a pretty awesome mini lab for testing and tinkering.

moondev··on Using Podman, Compose and BuildKit
Buildah is elite tooling. Enables you to build with devices and caps and kernel modules. Buildx acts like you should sign a waiver and really weak documentation if at all for what you are trying to do

The theme is actually correct, Apple is wrong
moondev··on Show HN: OS X Mavericks Forever
Was hoping this legendary gtk themer had a mavericks theme but Yosemite is the earliest it appears.

If you want a macOS theme with insane quality on Linux this guy's work is the pinnacle.

moondev··on How to free up and automatically manage disk space for WSL
If you want to run Linux how is macOS a step up? It's a non starter.

Linux is Linux Windows offers Wsl1 and Wsl2 integration

The closest thing macOS has in any official capacity is their containers project, running each container in a VM for "security" at the expense of poor resource allocation and no compatibility with table stakes tooling like compose.

moondev··on How to free up and automatically manage disk space for WSL
You can run wsl1 and wsl2 side by side
moondev··on Show HN: Edka – Kubernetes clusters on your own Hetzner account
