monsterix··on Techstars to open up shop in Detroit
I wish there was something like this here in DC. Very little startup scene. All I get to see are those sweettalk recruitment shops and those three lettered agencies that I couldn't imagine working for.

Good news for you Detroit!

> we should experiment with newer forms of government...

This is so very true but almost certainly undoable without a some form of help from the rich and powerful.

For example, one positive (or negative depending on which side you're on) thing about depleting oil resources is that much of the Government financing relies on tax dollars collected from hydrocarbons. And thus little oil would effectively mean lower available budgets, lesser means/control etc. Especially for totalitarian Governments that are considerable more expensive to operate.

Unless of course entrepreneurs like Elon Musk solve the energy problem for them. :)

monsterix··on We Make Mistakes
This is the exact case of a crowded doorway [1] we discussed almost two years ago on HN: Higher the number of applications implies higher the perceivable quality of YC applications. Implies higher the probability of riskier bets to fall through.

What's potentially dangerous about this situation is that quite a few glossy low-risk companies will outdo the more riskier ones - even though YC staff is one of the best in the world and thoroughly equipped to do what it does - and thus lowering the chances of fishing real gems off the coast.

I do not have the numbers, but how have the batches of later years done as compared to the early ones which had Dropbox, Airbnb in them?

> public so terrorized out of its mind that it feels the safest thing to do is to not make eye contact.

My goodness! I shuddered to note that this is not only very true but also almost unstoppable at the moment. Unless a miracle of unity comes by, that brings people together.

monsterix··on The Ebola Wars
So have you.

Besides if you're hiding the reasons and the team that led to the death of someone of another color it could of course be for noble reasons. Nice sell. And just look at the number of down-votes, lame comments and attempt to cull the discussion. HN at its very best. And it's fucking racist to the core.

I know at least 22 cases that have been suppressed so far. You can safely assume the number to be much higher, misunderstood and often under-reported. Dig deep and you'll find a lot of unreported reality!

monsterix··on The Ebola Wars
> That would be awful it it were true.

I totally agree with you.

My intent to know the context of discussions, people and debate that went on for three days while Dr. Khan's health degraded was simply this: Could groupthink have been responsible for the outcome and been avoided? If so, can it be done in the future?

If you look at my original comments closely, I only complained about racially driven down-votes from some users on HN and shared my fears about a similarly driven group-think that might / might not have happened in Africa. Since there is no data on that, it should be outed.

I will not myself be excusable if I were to really accuse someone (or a group) simply by their color, especially after reading some article on HN.

All I seek is the details or think that led to the unfortunate decision. I can form my opinion off it.

monsterix··on The Ebola Wars
> Not giving Dr.Khan the medicine was the right thing to do.

Sure. How did you know it was the right thing to do?

monsterix··on India’s Downward Spiral
> India is the most prominent example of a country with plenty of voting but no democracy.

Second you on that one! I lived in various parts of rural India for a little over 12 years, and the deeper I went, the more I saw people there actively voting in droves. And the harder their life and generally poor state of affairs!

monsterix··on The Ebola Wars
It is rather more absurd to withhold the medicine from a dying patient simply to manage "public perception" sir. You can go ahead and give a negative vote too, it wouldn't mean a thing.

Yes, people are doing very good, noble work -- Dr Khan was one of them too -- I seek to know the thoughts and names of those who chose to withhold the medicine from him, and give it to others the very next day.

The world should know. And thanks for the article, I did read it before and therefore, I ask for reasons that led to their unfortunate decision.

monsterix··on The Ebola Wars
So why not share the names and reasoning the doctors had which perceptibly led to withholding (rather taking it away) from Dr. Khan?

Public perception makes it hard I can understand, but not giving the drug simply to manage public perception is incredibly selfish and stupid no matter how you choose to see or read all the reportage.

> Debates and the call went on for three days?

Lol, sure. Does that even make any sense? Groupthink as a proxy for effort? Seen that before!

Very interesting find, but the website is a bit cumbersome (apologies for being pedantic here) to use. Found it painful to click open and read just a small paragraph related to each photograph below.

Another recent interesting newspiece on archeology was about the 'Antikythera computer' [1] that is apparently almost 2000 years old. Unable to find the most authentic source for that report as it seems almost everyone picked up the story later on.

And then there was one recent piece on HN about 40,000 year old Indonesian Cave paintings via Smithsonian magazine [2]. All this is very intriguing.

monsterix··on Can the World Really Set Aside Half of the Planet for Wildlife?
It actually does tie up all the parameters together: Evolution, Creation, Destruction, Energy, Disorderliness etc. etc. :)
monsterix··on Can the World Really Set Aside Half of the Planet for Wildlife?
It is possible.

One of the discussions that spurred here in my cubicle was: How? How can we set aside half of the planet for anything other than ourselves? It's impossible! With almost every nation, state or person out there worrying about their piece of land it surely must be impossible.

But not quite.

Use Nuclear Leakage & Irradiation. Like the one that led to the Red Forest in Chernobyl [1].

'Radiological Reserves' are probably the only way to set aside a large area for animals/plants with a guarantee that humans will not come by. Not in the next 10,000 years!

Eat that! :)

monsterix··on India's pro-business Modi storms to historic election win
Yes. I believe in its (courts') efficiencies and mess. Wish you a happy life stuck in the same court you're thumping your chest upon. I am sure you know more about Indian courts, than I do.

They are supposed to be independent, but they're not. Rut flows through it in the form of cash or life threatening pressures. But obviously you're so happy about it, so I can't convince you -- unless you go through it yourself.

monsterix··on India's pro-business Modi storms to historic election win
> The Supreme Court of India has declared Narendra Modi as legally not guilty of any crimes.

This is not true. SC has said in 'absence of sufficient proof' and such. Please do your homework.

monsterix··on India's pro-business Modi storms to historic election win
You mean go to a Modi controlled court and ask milord Modi "where should I seek justice against the crimes you have been doing?"

I am sure you are smarter than this.

monsterix··on India's pro-business Modi storms to historic election win
I usually do not write comments on politicians, but being an Indian I feel sad that someone like Narendra Modi has even been considered for the post of Prime Minister by my countrymen. Let alone the decision to elect him for the top job.

But so it is, he is now the PM, and I accept what democracy and fate has asked me to accept and go with.

Having said that I am yet to understand why the following murders by the Godman himself have remain unsolved so far:

To inform and remind people there are quite a few murders that have been carried out by Modi, Amit Shah and D. G. Vanzara:

1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haren_Pandya This guy was the Home Minister of Gujarat and key witness to implicate Modi to confess former's role in execution of 3000 children and women in Godhra Kand.

2. http://archive.indianexpress.com/news/kausar-bi-wa... Wife of the hitman used to kill 1 above.

3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Soharbuddin_... The hitman.

4. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ishrat_Jahan Unsolved.

5. The guy with direct reporting to Amit Shah and Narendra Modi: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D.G._Vanzara The hitman with a uniform.

6. and there are several hundred other cases which could and could not surface above Modi's close quarters.

Here is a video of a few criminals who proudly discuss how they went on killing entire families of a particular faith, and how Modi gave them the strength, protection and instruction to do so:

7. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFZBNUnG5pI

I am actually reassessing the value in the concept of democracy lately. I think tyrannies almost always figure out a way to come on the top. It's like seeded alongside the Third Law of Thermodynamics.

monsterix··on Paul Graham's personal website (circa 2000)
I've failed at YC applications three times. And I know I'm completely missing the day-to-day stuff of the most creative community on the planet. But all that is fine by me.

I miss PG more. There was this hope in him that there is someone who understands the correlation between the riskiest larval start-ups, investor appetite and home runs. There was this hope that my seemingly dumb ideas had a chance, however small, of making it big when someone like PG gave me a starting gun.

monsterix··on YC emails are sent
Reminds me of my comment about an year ago:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5648760

(1) Quality of applications, as in number of people who can write and talk really well, have gone up and the (2) number of applications have gone up; means the gate is even more crowded than ever before. So the pressure to dole out a silkier YC application next time will go up.

Obviously the outcome of this cycle is that the focus of the entire selection ruckus will move towards "best of best applications written in English" and not really start-ups (which look/are bad) but have the potential to go on to become unicorns/home runs.

Meanwhile, this pressure will also give rise to energetic backbenchers. A psychology for those who feel cheated by fate to go after and kill it outside of the incubator loop. Good luck YC, no-YC both!

monsterix··on Can I delete my Skype account?
I recently deleted my Linkedin account. But their junk emails continue to dirty my email even now. Next in the line is Skype, and then probably Facebook.

Thankfully, I never shared my genuine data with Facebook or opened an a/c on Instagram or Whatsapp ever so I'm good at a certain level when it comes to Facebook.

In my opinion Twitter is the only option that is sane at the moment.
