monroepe··on Ask HN: Are there any examples of profitable Google Chrome extensions?
Ugh. Yeah I immediately leave the site when something like that pops up. I can't stand that.
monroepe··on Ask HN: Is it necessary to be a CS major be successful in the tech sector?
I agree with your "Why not?" point. If you are already in college and plan to do 4 years, you might as well get a cs degree. For me it was too late to switch majors when I found out how much I loved programming. And it really wasn't worth it to do a 5th year. But I did take as many courses as I could before I graduated.
monroepe··on Ask HN: Is it necessary to be a CS major be successful in the tech sector?
Honestly it comes down to motivation. Whether or not you get a cs degree you have to super motivated and hard working to achieve greatness.
monroepe··on [dead]
Are you posting it from an outside site? Because Facebook changed their API on April 30.
monroepe··on Black Mirror: Fifteen Million Merits (2012)
Such a good show. I wish there were more episodes.
monroepe··on Ask HN: Always late to the office, is this OK?
Yeah most dev jobs are flexible about when you come in as long as you work hard and make the meetings. I am shocked he sent you home for the day. That is crazy. And don't get me wrong I am really annoyed by people who are late.
monroepe··on Ask HN: To what extent should code be taught in schools?
I definitely think it should be taught. If taught correctly, I believe it could really excite children about school. Plus it just offers so many benefits even to kids that won't become programmers like problem solving, critical thinking, planning, etc.
monroepe··on Why can't Google fix their frontpage?
Wow. I really thought that screen shot was from IE8 or IE9. I didn't know they still had their back and forward arrows like that. It looks so bad in my opinion. I had to downgrade to IE9 at work for certain tasks and mine looks the same. Normally I just use Chrome though.
monroepe··on Why can't Google fix their frontpage?
Probably because you are using an old version of IE.
monroepe··on Ask HN: How do I start freelancing?
You could try out some of the online freelance websites. My friend has had some good success web dev finding work on elance.
monroepe··on Ask HN: Who's your role model?
I don't know if I consider him my role model, but I definitely think what he is doing is amazing. And I love reading about him and his interests.
monroepe··on Death for stealing candles
I was actually going to point that out too. I did a research paper on theft in this time period when I was in college and was shocked when I saw that people were sentenced to for theft. I mean I know it was a different time, but it really wasn't all that long ago. I was relieved when I looked into it more and found that most weren't really executed.
monroepe··on Ask HN: Which SciFi novel(s) would you want made into a TV series?
I could definitely see that. And that would be awesome!
monroepe··on [dead]
I would never pay for an app.
monroepe··on [dead]
I usually pronounce it "clee." I have never really heard anyone say it out loud though.
monroepe··on Ask HN: Which book are you reading these days?
Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb
monroepe··on Ask HN: Why do HN users avoid humor?
Yeah for some reason this is one of the few places online where I don't feel like trolling. It's weird.
monroepe··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Elantris by Brandon Sanderson, Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb, Shadow Chaser by Alexey Pehov
monroepe··on What's really behind Slack's crazy growth?
Good question. My department just switched to Slack for our chats and I really don't see what the big deal is. It's great, but I don't see why it stands out.
monroepe··on Show HN: Daily Checklist
It looks super cool. I actually just started working on a similar app. What did you use to make it?
monroepe··on Ask HN: Who are your favorite poets?
Mihai Eminescu - "Si Daca" (And If in English)

And if the branches tap my pane And the poplars whisper nightly, It is to make me dream again I hold you to me tightly.

And if the stars shine on the pond And light its sombre shoal, It is to quench my mind's despond And flood with peace my soul.

And if the clouds their tresses part And does the moon outblaze, It is but to remind my heart I long for you always.

monroepe··on Ask HN: I am the dumbest person in the room. What should I do?
Your co-workers sound horrible. While I agree that you could learn a lot from the experience, even so I wouldn't want to work with those people.
monroepe··on Ask HN: Settle this simple elegant vs. readable disagreement
I like the second a lot more. It's just easier to read without knowing anything else.
monroepe··on Ask HN: What should I teach at a boot camp?
Everyone building a different app is a good idea depending on how far along they are. But early on I would have them make the same or a similar app.
monroepe··on Ask HN: What should I teach at a boot camp?
Focus on helping them to build stuff and answering their own questions. Yes that other stuff is important, but unrealistic in a bootcamp. They need to leave being able to build something.
monroepe··on Ask HN: What sci-fi movie most resembles our future?
Yeah but the people who program the robots can be racist.
monroepe··on Ask HN: What sci-fi movie most resembles our future?
Total Recall
monroepe··on Ask HN: Your lead developer got bored. What to do?
If you really want to keep him, I would give him free reign on a project he wants to do. It can either be related to the company or not, but let him do a side project for work. It can be either a week or a month or more if you are comfortable. He is probably just burned out. Really I would just try to get to the root of the problem and see what he wants to change and work with him to get there.
monroepe··on Ask HN: Why is there no solution for direct democracy?
Not everyone has smartphones.
monroepe··on [dead]
Putin and company.
