monktastic1··on The Expert Mind [pdf] (2006)
At first I was imagining this was a blindfolded game, in which case this would have been especially surprising and impressive!
monktastic1··on The Expert Mind [pdf] (2006)
Most of us cannot be those "greatest minds that have thus far graced this planet." For many of us, it's more fulfilling to be good at one thing than mediocre at dozens.
monktastic1··on Things I Won't Work With: Dimethylcadmium (2013)
Indeed. I am reminded of the sad and horrible story of https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_Wetterhahn
monktastic1··on A 1940 Letter of André Weil on Analogy in Mathematics (2003) [pdf]
And without that context, his sister may have been perplexed as to why he would dive into complicated math that he should have known she wouldn't understand. Consider that sometimes when you read ego or aggression into writing, it's not coming from the author's mind but is a projection of your own.
monktastic1··on Share of total health spending, by percentile
I mean you can personally refuse care, but the subtext I get is that others should martyr themselves similarly. That's not a choice you get to make for them.
monktastic1··on Counting bytes faster than you'd think possible
FYI, "eke." "Eek" is an expression of alarm or surprise.
monktastic1··on A Man Who Thought Too Fast (2020)
In your version, the color of a vertex is independent of other vertices. The real problem is about entirely about connections to other vertices. The latter cannot be reduced to the former.
monktastic1··on The Delusion of the Polygraph
One of the two best polygraph jokes in the Simpsons! The other, of course, being https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Or2iZ-mOvf8
monktastic1··on Ask HN: Struggling with poor memory and executive function. What to do?
Hey, I don't have any solutions for you, but wanted to share some camaraderie. I feel exactly this way. In fact, I could have written the post myself.
monktastic1··on A prank cursor resulted in an employee being fired before they started (2020)
I know that jokes are ruined by explaining them, but... could you explain the joke here? I also read it as misdirection.
monktastic1··on Marion Stokes, the Woman Who Spent over 30 Years Recording Every Minute of US TV
Not sure where you're from, but in most of the US "apartments" are not assets, but liabilities: tenants don't own them, but rent them. We generally call them "condos" when owned.
monktastic1··on Psychedelics are challenging the standard of randomized controlled trials
A lovely take. For years now, JHU has been emphasizing that the benefits of psilocybin are strongly correlated with whether one has a "mystical-type experience." My own explorations (long ago) strongly bore this out.
monktastic1··on Psychedelics are challenging the standard of randomized controlled trials
Your objection is addressed in the comment. See "If you're a materialist, you might object..."
monktastic1··on Why is x & -x equal to the largest power of 2 that divides x?
"Without loss of much generality..." ;)
monktastic1··on Why is x & -x equal to the largest power of 2 that divides x?
Another, more "visual" description:

Without loss of generality, let the number be xx...xx100...000, where x stands for any bit and there are n trailing zeros.

1. The largest power of 2 that divides it is 2^n.

2. The twos-complement representation is xx...xx011...111, where the x's are inverted from before, plus one.

3. After adding one, we get xx...xx100...000. Notice that the carryover stopped exactly where the zero was (which is where our first 1 from the right originally was).

4. All the "x" bits are now inverted from their original values, so their & is zero. All the original trailing zero bits are still zero, so their & is zero. The middle 1 has stayed 1, so its & is 1.

5. Thus, the overall & is 00...00100...000 = 2^n, as required.

monktastic1··on Google announces Firebase Genkit with Ollama support
(BTW, "bias" is a noun, and "biased" is the adjective. It's like the difference between "I am prejudice" and "I am prejudiced.")
monktastic1··on OpenAI departures: Why can’t former employees talk?
Man, sounds like NDAs all the way down.
monktastic1··on Georgia Tech, Meta create open dataset to advance solutions for carbon capture
Why not nuking the whole planet, so that nobody is left? Or maybe you want some people remaining to enjoy it, in which case why not your progeny instead of others?

I find this whole line of thought fraught. Some assumption somewhere went wrong.

monktastic1··on IceCube observes seven potential tau neutrinos
One who can observe Tau neutrinos, no less.
monktastic1··on Ramanujan's lost notebook
Please either cite something meaningful or else stop posting vapid, bitter, empty responses.
monktastic1··on Ramanujan's lost notebook
And yours are the words of a contemptous, snarky Internet troll. You might find Reddit a better place for your edginess. It's not welcome here.
monktastic1··on Ramanujan's lost notebook
You are confusing using emotion to reach God with emotion being God.

And of course there is "such a thing." You even described what it refers to, a definition which is sufficient for the purposes of this thread.

monktastic1··on Ramanujan's lost notebook
I was with you right up until the word "emotion." Although "Hinduism" is vast and covers quite a few disparate beliefs and philosophies, none of them (to my knowledge) even approximately equate God with an emotion. Even bliss (ananda) is only one aspect.

I don't claim to know the particular religion of his village and/or lineage, but I understand his God to be something closer to the Consciousness that (supposedly) gives rise to all of reality.

monktastic1··on Two nights of broken sleep can make people feel years older, finds study
I suspect it will only be "solved" once the problems of existential angst and ennui are. It's remarkable how powerful our primal emotions can be at overriding even the strongest of drugs.
monktastic1··on Two nights of broken sleep can make people feel years older, finds study
In case this helps anybody: I've been using those BreatheRight strips (extra strength) and they've been incredibly helpful. Not nearly as effective as CPAP, I'm sure, but a milder version of the same effect.

monktastic1··on Game of Life, simulating itself, infinitely zoomable
For me it never loads on Android Chrome.
monktastic1··on Experienced engineers are struggling to get hired
At some of these companies, vests happen monthly (at least, after the first year). It's effectively cash, adding 200k+ annually to a salary of 200+.
monktastic1··on Ex-Google engineer charged with stealing trade secrets
What I'm inferring from this truly bizarre thread is that some people assume that clarifying questions are always fronts for hidden motivations (such as springing "gotchas" or getting into debates). It might be worthwhile to consider that not all people operate that way.
monktastic1··on Ex-Google engineer charged with stealing trade secrets
If he felt that he had to "get out in time," then he knew he did something "wrong" in the sense that my parent is (presumably) asking about. That's the only question I'm answering. You seem intent on drawing me into a debate about subtleties of moral and legal ethics, but I'm sorry to say I'm not interested right now.
