> People live in poverty without being an addict

Please let me know where these people are! I have been riding the streets for 18 years in a city with over 1 million (Top 100 by population in the US) and I haven't met an actual impoverished person that was not an addict. Our "poorest" citizens eat better than lower middle-class with EBT. They steal because its 1000% easier than any job on the planet.

monkmartinez··on Metal thieves in America's cities
These are not crimes of poverty. These are crimes of people that literally don't give a f** about anyone but themselves and getting their next fix. Go ride along with your local PD or fire department to see the bulls** for yourself.

> Young people don't want to become police anymore and police don't want to police anymore.

For good reasons too! It F**ing sucks dealing with ALL the problems of a city. Ask me how I know!

None of us, first responders, are allowed/empowered to do our damn jobs. We have been effectively neutered by woke activists that think everyone is out to get them. All hell breaks loose when you ask, demand or otherwise force people to take responsibility for themselves and/or own their mistakes.

It should be called the MINECRAPIFICATION of EVERYTHING!

Who knows if Notch was the first to herald in this new paradigm of half-finished products? It's the first thing that comes to mind every time I experience, read about or witness a product, service or idea that isn't quite fully baked. I say, "Self, they are just cashing in while they iterate and extend... or not."

monkmartinez··on The AI Lie
"It has become standard to describe A.I. as a tool. I argue that this framing is incorrect. It does not aid in the completion of a task. It completes the task for you. A.I. is a service. You cede control and decisions to an A.I. in the way you might to an independent contractor hired to do a job that you do not want to or are unable to do. This is important to how using A.I. in a creative workflow will influence your end result. You are, at best, taking on a collaborator. And this collaborator happens to be a mindless average aggregate of data."

As a non-famous, non-professional artist this seems like a snobby take. Everyone of these arguments is logically inconsistent with what I know and have experienced using LLM's, stable diffusion, DALL-E, and other generative machine learning algorithms. I wonder what the author would say about plotter artists or CGI artists... would it sound like his take on generative art models?

I guess the only point I would really like to make is this; A closed mind is already defeated.

monkmartinez··on Handedness as a determinant of lateral bias in human functional cradling (2023)
You are correct and I have been using ambidextrous wrong for 40+ years. Never too old to learn something and I did today, so thank you!

Cross-Dominant

1. Mixed preference: A cross-dominant individual favors different hands, eyes, or feet for different tasks. For example, they might write with their right hand, eat with their left hand, and kick a ball with their left foot.

2. No clear dominant side: They lack a single, strongly dominant side of the body, leading to a mixed pattern across various activities.

3. Potential Challenges: Cross-dominance can sometimes be associated with minor difficulties in coordination or activities requiring single-sided precision.

Ambidextrous

1. Equal Skill: A truly ambidextrous individual can perform tasks with equal skill and control using either hand. This includes tasks that require fine motor skills, like writing.

2. Rarity: True ambidexterity is relatively uncommon.

3. Developed Skill: Often, ambidexterity is a learned ability and not an innate characteristic. People can train themselves to use both hands with near-equal proficiency.

In Summary:

Cross-dominant: Mixed hand/eye/foot preference for different tasks. Ambidextrous: Equal proficiency in using both hands for almost any task

monkmartinez··on Handedness as a determinant of lateral bias in human functional cradling (2023)
Lefty here as well, funny thing about my experience with two kids (now teenagers) was that I could get switch arms with no loss of functionality holding a baby. I credit this to living in right hand world. Most lefties I know are at least somewhat ambidextrous simply by fact of most things being built for, taught and learned from right-handed people.
monkmartinez··on Groq runs Mixtral 8x7B-32k with 500 T/s
I know some fancy benchmark says "almost no loss", but... subjectively, there is a clear quality loss. You can try for yourself, I can run Mixtral at 5.8bpw and there is an OBVIOUS difference between what I have seen from Groq and my local setup beside the sound barrier shattering speed of Groq. I didn't know Mixtral could output such nice code and I have used it A LOT locally.

monkmartinez··on Apple Vision Nope: Why I returned mine
This is the most relevant comment. I have the Meta Quest 2 running on a very powerful workstation[0] and its fun for an hour or two every month or so. I get VR sickness sometimes which is really not fun at all. Its actually really fucking terrible. I can fish all day (Ocean or Lake) and not get sick, but these VR headsets can be debilitating.

[0] I was a Macbook Pro user for many, many years until they started soldering everything to the darn MB. Apple is user hostile, imo, to the point that the juice isn't worth the squeeze. I strictly buy used workstations (Think Dell 7820's, SuperMicro, etc.) that are a generation or two behind the latest and greatest. TCO is just phenomenal here AND I can upgrade them or downgrade them very easily. A chromebook with internet access is all I need to have my own private, GPU enabled, "datacenter" when I am away from the house. I love my setup and its so gdamn practical that "justification" is not a verb in my vocabulary.

monkmartinez··on Show HN: Reor – An AI note-taking app that runs models locally
I left an issue to explain this in more detail, but I don't think the problem is chunking. The issue is the prompt. The local LLM space does itself no favors by thinking about and using prompts as an after thought.

IME, the prompt should be front/center in terms of importance and the key to unlocking the models potential. It's one of the main reasons why Textgen-Webui is sooooo good. You can really dial-in the prompt, from the template itself to working with the system message. Then begin futzing with the myriad of other parameters to achieve fantastic results.

Welp, I have been messing around with a small project using PySimpleGUI using Deepseek to help me learn it. I found a cool project that has a very nice theme for 'ttk' widgets[0] which are supported in PySimpleGUI. Not sure how to proceed... monkmartinez··on Google's Gemini Advanced: Tasting Notes and Implications
I like the article and it gave me a few ideas, as I have been struggling with Gemini Advanced for a few days.

My problem probably stems from the fact that I prompt in the same style I have been prompting GPT4 via API and through 3rd party interfaces. GA has consistently tells me it can NOT help which is super frustrating. I mean to say, *$&%#ing up!

I was using it as a pair programmer, and it authored a first run on a python script. The script worked, I made a few changes in VS Code and then pasted in the new code to GA. I asked it to make a change, it responded back with; I am just an AI model, I can not help with that. ARRRGGGHHH! You, GA, wrote the first draft and I changed a variable name and its assignment... What do you mean, "you can't help?"

I love the explanations and the speed of GA so far. There is very little control over parameters which I think will help, so hopefully that is implemented in the near future. The interface as the article states is pretty slick and the colab/replit integration is super cool. I am excited to see this product mature.

monkmartinez··on Ollama releases Python and JavaScript Libraries
What troubles me is how many projects are using ollama. I can't stand that I have to create a model file for every model using ollama. I have a terabyte of models that are mostly GGUF, which is somewhere around 70 models of various sizes. I rotate in and out of new versions constantly. GGUF is a ~container~ that already has most of the information needed to run the models! I felt like I was taking crazy pills when so many projects started using it for their backend.

Text-generation-webui is leagues ahead in terms of plug and play. Just load the model and it will get you within 98% of what you need to run any model from HF. Making adjustments to generation settings, prompt and more is done with a nice GUI that is easily saved for future use.

Using llama.cpp is also very easy. It takes seconds to build on my windows computer with cmake. Compiling llama.cpp with different parameters for older/newer/non-existent GPUs is very, very simple... even on windows, even for a guy that codes in Python 97% of the time and doesn't really know a thing about C++. The examples folder in llama.cpp is gold mine of cool things run and they get packaged up into *.exe files for dead simple use.

monkmartinez··on Text-to-CAD
Great start! I have a feeling this is going to cascade (no pun intended) in ways we haven't quite wrapped our heads around.

What is the underlying technology here? Is this an LLM driven workflow or Image generation driven workflow? I can imagine a way to do something similar either way given a dataset geared a particular direction. Speaking of... anyone have a lead on a CAD-esque dataset?

I have been trying to use local llm's for openSCAD code generation. My results have been quite terrible, and I would rather use Fusion or Solidworks if I am going to "sit down" and CAD something. I would really like to see the dataset used for this or something similar. My guess is this is an openSCAD or similar workflow.

monkmartinez··on Return to office is 'dead,' Stanford economist says
The "well-known" fact you speak of is what my wife's boss uses to justify return to office. It's definitely not the massive investment in office furniture, office remodel, and meeting spaces that have been gussied up for impressions of success. No way it's that! /s

monkmartinez··on There's Never Been a Worse Time to Buy Instead of Rent
Can you give me a rough area of where this is?
monkmartinez··on There's Never Been a Worse Time to Buy Instead of Rent
Refinancing costs money and resets the clock. Why does no one talk about that? Another poor financial decision that is paraded around like gospel.
monkmartinez··on There's Never Been a Worse Time to Buy Instead of Rent
Have you factored in property taxes, impact fees if any, landscaping, HOA fees if any, school district fees/changes/bonds, fire protection fees/bonds/changes, Home owners insurance, sewer or water treatment bonds/fees/changes, utility bonds/fees/changes, and more?

Have you factored in a terrible neighbor? A halfway house or care home next door?

Rent may be going up or down or sideways... you have the option to move if you don't like it. I could realistically move in less than a week and I have a full blown wood shop in my rental garage, two teenagers, wife and a dog. It would be messy, but we could do it with basically zero consequences.

If you care about your credit score, you are not going to just walk away from your mortgage. We can jam out of here if the wind blows a direction we don't care for.

With all three cars paid off, I truly have zero debt. A few of my friends tell me they have "zero debt except for the mortgage"... I am like that is a giant ball and chain around your neck broham... Nothing about that says "debt free" or "freedom."

monkmartinez··on There's Never Been a Worse Time to Buy Instead of Rent
Depends... It would depend on the price to service the mortgage. I would do a quick model to see the timeline to "break even" on paying in full verses the total amount of interest paid to service the loan for duration of the term.
monkmartinez··on There's Never Been a Worse Time to Buy Instead of Rent
We "made" $190k selling a home we bought as a foreclosure in 2009 in 2021. In reality we didn't make jack squat. We paid that much in interest alone over the course of those years. The blood, sweat equity, and money we spent on upkeep and upgrades is incalculable to double entry standard, but I can tell you it was an absolute shit ton. I didn't even do the math on our property taxes, refinance charges, and closing costs because it's maddening to think about.

Since we have been renting our accounts have gone parabolic. We are able to save my wife's entire check, every month. There is no money burning a hole in her pocket to redo the kitchen, or bathroom, or backyard. There is no money going toward a new garbage disposal or A/C unit. We have more money despite two teenagers that have gone parabolic fees for club sports, driving, clothes, and FOOD.

We could absolutely buy right now, but I have my foot firmly down as a HARD NO. I would rather buy her a new car to assuage the urge to buy a home. If I could wave a magic wand and remove the desire completely, I would in a heartbeat. A home, from a 100% economic POV, is a waste of time and money. It is only complicated because of emotions and "what everyone else" is doing. There is zero logic in a mortgage and what is worse is that you never truly own the dirt your home is sitting on, at least in the USA.

Edit: I feel like the people that encourage others to buy a mortgage are doing so out of ignorance and have never actually thought it through to the end of days. I see old people living in nursing homes every day. None of them tell me about the homes they lived in while we wait for transport to the ER. They all talk about experiences, places they have traveled, their families, and the parts of their working lives they loved and hated. Never had a person talk about their "mortgage", I mean "home" on their deathbed.

monkmartinez··on There's Never Been a Worse Time to Buy Instead of Rent
Agreed! I believe prices will break before rates, the FED has to break something to course correct. They know a loosening cycle would absolutely demolish what is left of the economy. Rates will be higher for longer.
monkmartinez··on There's Never Been a Worse Time to Buy Instead of Rent
> Homeowners aren't going to sell into a market with precipitously declining prices.

If they "need" to move they will. Lose the ability to pay property taxes, baby boomer's departing earth, AirBnBust, raising insurance rates, job loss, and many other reasons...

The market is frozen right now. Mainstream media is lying to us, Realtors are manipulating the listings, Homebuilders are playing games with listings, accounting and land. The charade will not hold up for much longer.

monkmartinez··on There's Never Been a Worse Time to Buy Instead of Rent
The mortgage itself is a waste of money if you don't pay if off early. I wish people understood this better. There is almost no situation where owning a home makes sense if you don't pay it off before the term and we aren't in some wacky pandemic or financial bubble.
monkmartinez··on There's Never Been a Worse Time to Buy Instead of Rent
Something is going to break. It will be prices or rates. My guess is prices will fall precipitously and it will happen soon. I further posit that prices will not be "sticky" as they typically are due to the extreme nature of the imbalance. Once the alarm sounds for the exits, it will be stampede verses an orderly departure.

Having sold a home (foreclosure we bought in 2009) in 2021, I am super happy to be renting again. Owning a home is pain in the ass and I say this a person that can remodel a bathroom, install flooring, and fix my own A/C if needed. Constantly on the hook for every problem that invariably crops up is giant time, energy and money drain.

My wife on the other hand, hates renting. She wants to paint the walls and decorate... and nest? We end up spending a crap ton of our time and money on the house. It's 100% emotional for her. I understand, but I don't share those emotions. We have had lots of time to talk about it and it will be different when we buy again. She will have a budget for house stuff and I will not be on the hook for every little thing. In short, she is going to step up for maintenance if she wants to buy a house again.

> These days, the idea of compelled vaccination is pretty controversial, so the idea that we are going to take away peoples' liberty and force them to take psychotropic drugs after we've imprisoned them seems beyond belief.

This is already happening. Compelled vaccination is completely different than a mentally disturbed member of our society roaming the streets unhinged. I have been party to several title 36[1] cases and it's very, very difficult to get dangerous people "petitioned". It requires coordination between disparate agencies like hospitals, Fire/EMS, Police, community mental health orgs, etc. None of them share a database.

Once they are found to be incapable of living on their own, what do we do with them? Jail? Hospital? Half-way house/Assisted Living?

I will tell you... They end up back on the streets and it isn't pretty. The underbelly of every American city is a nasty, grimy, horrific place. I need to retire.
