monkmartinez··on Falling Home Prices Could Be a Good Thing
You are right, of course... however...

What about the power the government derives from taxing your real estate? Don't forget that either.

monkmartinez··on Falling Home Prices Could Be a Good Thing
This is cool, and I really hope it goes somewhere. I own a home, but think the whole thing is stupid.
monkmartinez··on Falling Home Prices Could Be a Good Thing
> ... You've got millions of homeowners 50+ who are expecting to use that asset value to live on...

Wealth and cash flow are two very different things. I can't tell you what the future holds for sure, but a few things.

If they have significant equity in their home, chances are good that they have significant equity in other places as well. I don't have data to back this up, with the exception of my role on the board of a my employer's 457b plan.

Timing, more than anything, has more to say on any matter in retirement that we give credit. One doesn't know when cancer hits. One doesn't know when COPD hits, and you have to move to Arizona. One doesn't get to pick when the market bottoms or tops.

Housing is a lousy investment from a purely numbers point of view. I became an owner very reluctantly and it has cost me dearly. Taxes have gone up 15% every year. While they house ages it breaks and I am on the hook for everything. $75 in weed/bug stuff today... next week it will be something else, and the week after. I've spent multi-thousands on this thing outside of mortgage that I will never recoup... also time and it pisses me off.

My sweat equity will never be recaptured, really. I am only 36 once, and I spent a good three months last year remodeling a bathroom (due to mold) and missed a ton of good run days, time with family. BUT I saved a bunch of money doing it myself!!!! Don't care, laying tile sucks ass. never again.

I can't wait until home ownership becomes a relic of the past.

> In the US, your primary residence is usually your largest asset, and by its very nature, it becomes an investment that you want to protect

Why should it be an asset in the first place?

monkmartinez··on Ask HN: How do you make big bucks and get out of grinding?
Pretty cool. I hope you don't get sick, sincerely. Also, I hope you've done the hard thinking about the years when you are 50-60+ years of age. Life changes as you age.

Are you paid in Eth or some other form of currency?
monkmartinez··on Show HN: Aragon – Everything you need to run your company on Ethereum
> The payout function can be contingent on either the buyer or arbitrators releasing the funds.

How long is the discovery period? What about "returns"? What if the arbitrator is working with the seller and scams me? When does "I have a big gun and I am not afraid to use it" come into the function?

> The arbitrators can be determined before hand or rely on an external contract that offers arbitration services.

And how much will those services cost? Who vets the arbitrator? What is my recourse if arbitration fails?

> The possibilities are truly endless.

Yes, I agree. This is just built for a place that does not yet exist.

monkmartinez··on Show HN: Aragon – Everything you need to run your company on Ethereum
And how deep should that go? Pretty soon you will need arbitration for the arbiters.

Has no one addressed the basic need of a justice system with these crypto currencies?

monkmartinez··on Show HN: Aragon – Everything you need to run your company on Ethereum
Who or what backs up the arbitrator? This is why we have guns, police, prisons, and militaries and lawyers....
monkmartinez··on Show HN: Aragon – Everything you need to run your company on Ethereum
> there's no underlying system that can tell me to fuck off and that I'm not getting paid.

You are right. This is why these things will not go anywhere. Ultimately they need some kind of "back up"... For example, the system we currently have flows like so: Nation state Military > Federal Police > Local Police > Physical Intimidation via face to face meeting. At every step, stop when lawyers and/or politicians get involved.

What would the stable coin look like? I mean, we already have 700+[1] "coins." we are way passed the ridiculous stage on that front.

monkmartinez··on Show HN: Aragon – Everything you need to run your company on Ethereum
The launch post seems to say that Ethereum|Aragon can solve the nation state problem, taxes and a whole host of other "problems" associated with running a business.

How?

How does Aragon eliminate the IRS or DIAN if you are doing business in America or Colombia, respectively?

How does it eliminate regulations on interstate and international commerce?

What companies would actually use this to run their verses say Quickbooks, right now?

What companies have been built on Ethereum so far and how have the principals done with regard to taxes and tariffs?

monkmartinez··on Volkswagen overtakes Toyota as the world's biggest carmaker
If we could buy Seat and/or Skoda in the states, I bet they would sell rather well. Kia and Hyundai are no longer "bargain" vehicles as they were in the past.
monkmartinez··on Massive networks of fake accounts found on Twitter
It is trivial to create a BOT type twitter account.

1. Get burner email and phone number

2. Post bot to DO, AWS or run it on a raspi

3. ???

4. Profit from all those sweet followers.

Many of them look entirely "real" or they can be hilariously obvious. I would bet it is happening on Facebook, Instagram, Snap and any other social network where "value" is derived from followers/eyeballs.

A paramedic could see the same things on the EKG. It doesn't take much training to see bad rhythms on the monitor.
monkmartinez··on How to Deal with Populism
The problem in the US is that there is no clear majority. Let's be clear, there are more than 2 parties, but the ultimate choice is completely binary: REP||DEM. The one who can dance in the media the best, wins.

It is all a load of bullshit.

monkmartinez··on How to Deal with Populism
Not in the US... because we really only have 2 parties, which is extremely unfortunate. We are polarized by design.
monkmartinez··on Estimated losses would make Snapchat the most unprofitable social media IPO
The problem is those numbers are easily faked|manipulated.

I agree with OP in the same way that I believe the story about the shoe shine boy and the stock market. It may not happen tomorrow, but facebook is not cool anymore.

monkmartinez··on Insurance firm to replace human workers with AI system
Why would it matter on the how the entire book is doing? Why can't the AI system take all of this into account assuming it has access to said data? Further, why should the AI system be used to run the entire company like you suggest. That is, it doesn't need to take into account every aspect of the business to replace a large portion of the workforce.

> This building burnt down because the solar panels on the roof caught fire, which spread across all the panel over the entire roof. The sprinklers never got a chance to go off because the roof collapsed.

Type 3 construction that burned to the ground? It doesn't take a human to realize or intuit that even type 1 buildings burn eventually (ask a firefighter!). If there is a way to truly model every possible variable when insuring a building, I will put money on humans doing a worse job than expert AI systems. You're asking the AI to not only predict but _know_ the future, and not asking that of the human... seems silly.

monkmartinez··on Insurance firm to replace human workers with AI system
Agreed that 1% could cost or make the most... now do you trust a human or computer to make the final decision? My guess: Humans will end up costing more.
monkmartinez··on Apple to slice iPhone production 10% due to sluggish sales
Only $10??? That is a lot of money for something that shouldn't be needed in the first place. I haven't spent $10 dollars on my phone since I bought a case for it in 2013. Then again, I have expandable memory and a headphone jack (Galaxy Note 3).
monkmartinez··on Automakers Prepare for an America That’s Over the Whole Car Thing
Compare the places you have lived to Texas, Arizona, Utah, and all of California in terms of population density and square miles/kilometers. The rest of the world are generally "fucking tiny" in comparison.

https://www.google.com/search?q=how+big+is+texas+compared+to...

monkmartinez··on Automakers Prepare for an America That’s Over the Whole Car Thing
1. Do you climb, kayak, bicycle, hike? If yes, how do you get your gear to XXXX?

2. Do you rely on someone with a vehicle? I know lots of people don't drive who live in DC and NYC... yet they "borrow" friends shit all the time.

3. Generational? As in, can't afford a vehicle or would rather "borrow" a vehicle? Or?

monkmartinez··on Automakers Prepare for an America That’s Over the Whole Car Thing
Agreed, I have the feeling that most people think San Francisco or New York when they think "city"... the problem is that Phoenix exists (all 517 square miles). There are many, many medium sized (1 million ppl +) cities that are conglomerations of suburbs, with very little "urban" interface like Phoenix dotting the western portion of the US.
monkmartinez··on Tragedy Made Steve Kerr See the World Beyond the Court
I agree that the adult aspect is not binary... however, American Football would not exist without allowing children to play as it stands now. Furthermore, the "owner class" of the state sports associations, NCAA, and NFL would stand to lose a great deal of money if children were not allowed to play.

Let's see if we do the right thing.

monkmartinez··on Tragedy Made Steve Kerr See the World Beyond the Court
Cigarettes? We don't allow minors to legally have them, further they are taxed and regulated at great length. Also, there is a massive educational aspect warning everyone about the risks. Show me that with the American Football, please.

Manual Labor? Ever heard of OSHA, MSHA, NIOSH, NIST? Just a few of the agencies looking after the well being of folks working manual labor. I work in a glorified blue collar job, we are regulated very tightly. We have presumptive cancer laws and you can't perform our job as a minor... most don't make it until they are well into their 20's.

monkmartinez··on Tragedy Made Steve Kerr See the World Beyond the Court
> By the time they are 40 or 50 they might be a vegetable or have committed suicide, but honestly how is that different than any other job?

The premise of your question is deeply flawed. It is radically different.

How many "young men" end up with broken bodies well before they make it to the big show? We just had a very young man at Univ. of Arizona (Kerr's alma mater) retire from basketball at 19 years old due to a 3rd tear of the ACL.

How many TBI's does it take before we end something that is clearly bad for society? You can't legally double leg tackle a guy standing on the corner, nor can one legally ingest many substances. Yet, society allows this "trade off" because it is sport. The logic falls flat on its face.
