monkin··on Ask HN: How long until Google charges for private Gmail accounts?
For anyone seeking a nice alternative to gmail and not so pricey I recommend Migadu: https://migadu.com. I used them til this month as I moved to iCloud+ Mail with custom domains for convenience. Yet I really recommend Migadu to everyone! :)
monkin··on New ProtonMail
Even if the VPS is $5 a month it’s way more than using Migadu[1] which has a $19 plan with “unlimited” domains and aliases. Not even mentioning the burden of configuring, upgrading, and maintaining mailcow.

monkin··on Letter to Freenode – Post Mortem of May 25, 2021
Stop your BS mate.
monkin··on Freenode ops take control of 700 channels
Oh, #vim was also taken and closed. :O
monkin··on Ask HN: Favorite purchases of last two years?
I’m enjoying it.

As a VIM user I use Blink Shell connected to EC2 instance running Ubuntu. If you’re used to macOS/Linux environments you‘ll not miss anything, and with Mosh support you will be always connected. Users that don’t use VIM or want to use different approach also have an option to do so with code-server, Coder or by using native editors(Textastic, Pythonista or play.js).

In addition to Blink Shell I also use Inspect Browser, Rest, Jayson, TLS Inspector, and native GitHub client.

I recommend this podcast: https://www.workbeyondmac.com/1637893/8226779-luis-alcaraz-a... to learn more about developing on iPad. :-)

iPad Pro 12.9” 2020 model, and moving completely to #iPadOnly way. Do not own any other device, and ditched my MBP after buying iPad. Do not miss anything as a designer/developer and I’m happy as hell now. :-)

If you want to try Blink use https://community.blink.sh/ to get your hands on the free community edition with latest features.

It’s different… and for me in many ways better.

I have 12.9 Pro model from 2020 with only folio case and pen. I own an external keyboard but only use it at home. I also have SIM, so more or less I have always a decent internet connection no matter where I am. Feat that is impossible with MBP without hotspot from iPhone. ;-)

Yet, the whole magic for me is in applications, having native app for Netflix, HBO, Reddit (Apollo) is a game changer for someone who used only Safari, Figma nad iTerm2 in full screen on a Mac, and rest was just browser based stuff. I could lie down and read some news, respond to tweets, scroll through Reddit, code in Blink and design using pen and Figurative at the same time watching Netflix without having a MBP on my laps baking my balls. ;-)

And, yes, external keyboard isn’t as bad as most people tell.

The only thing disappointing here is your comment about ONE block on the whole page that talks about connectivity, and you present it as a complete website. The website itself maybe is little outdated but does a great job telling what Blink does and what tech it uses to make your life easier.

One thing I don’t like about Google Play Store is their refund policy that only last 48 hours after that time you need to contact developer for a refund. Which in most cases ends on lack of answer from them.

On AppStore you have 90 days to do a refund, and mostly it’s always accepted, no questions asked.

Second, differences in prices. Yesterday my friend was scammed into app(one of the top apps there) that gave him 3 day trail but only when choosing 1 year license after that. After 3 days without notification he was billed for $125. The same app cost yearly on iOS $35 and lifetime for $40. And, this is just an example of many scammy tactics that go on on Play Store. :-)

No, it doesn’t mean that Apple does not have this problem. It has, but in smaller quantity.

How so? You can still use remote/local machines to develop. People use(including myself) great success apps like Blink Shell(https://blink.sh), Inspect Browser(https://apps.pdyn.net/inspect/) or code-server(https://github.com/cdr/code-server) to work full time on iPad. By full time I mean #iPadOnly way.

I do JS front-ends, back-ends in Go, I design in Figma(https://figurative.design/) and Affinity Designer/Photo. For coding my daily driver is Blink Shell(They released a free community edition if you want to try: https://community.blink.sh) with Mosh. I never had a feeling that my terminal is just connected to VPS. Whenever I open Blink, everything is still there as I left it. Slow connection? No problem with Mosh. Constantly changing networks or IP addresses? You will not lose a connection even for a minute.

After a long year after the switch to my only device at home, I can tell you that I never looked back nor needed any other machine. Maybe it doesn’t cover everyone’s needs, but you can’t say it’s close to zero. Most of current development can be done on it. :-)

monkin··on Substack's UI and 1Password temporarily cost me $2k
So you want 1Password to check CSS of the form before auto filling? The form itself isn’t hidden it’s styled to be flat. That’s the biggest problem of it.
monkin··on Substack's UI and 1Password temporarily cost me $2k
This field should be clearly visible, even if 1Password would mistakenly input data in there.
monkin··on Substack's UI and 1Password temporarily cost me $2k
It’s visually hidden for us to see, not for 1Password auto fill mechanism.
monkin··on Substack's UI and 1Password temporarily cost me $2k
It’s not 1Password fault, but poor design and implementation. :-)
monkin··on Electric car that charges itself
Their designer got to much inspiration from Tesla website, or I’m the only one who see’s that? ;-)
monkin··on Based Cooking
The only thing that’s missing for me is pictures of each step, and final dish. Why photos? When I’m doing something for the first time I want to see if I fucked up along the way. :-)
monkin··on I want a computer that I own
There should be just a phone for hackers and hardware/open source enthusiasts. They would have a toy to play with without a need to bash other “walled garden” platforms which isn’t for them apparently. As ordinary consumers don’t want to or do not have a knowledge on how to do those advanced tasks most HN users want.

And, that’s great! They shouldn’t know that, maybe there will be some cultural shift in the future, where everyone will be tech-savvy, and companies like Apple starts changing their approach. Until then HN users need to accept that most of those solutions are made for ordinary consumers, and embrace the niche for them. :-)

monkin··on Tool lets you confuse Google’s ad network, and a test shows it works
You can use Reader Mode to read it in full (used Safari, but should work on anything else too).
monkin··on Epic's bid to sue Apple over Fortnite in UK rejected
> that's a third of all your revenue that goes to apple/google because they can.

It’s not because “they can”. It is because they distribute it and give you huge audience of potential customers. Second, I’ll trust them more with my card than some third-party shady payment processor. You know how many scams would surface without them?

So I’m really fine with Apple/Google taking my 30%, but I’m probably alone. :-)

monkin··on Epic's bid to sue Apple over Fortnite in UK rejected
> Epic had long argued such a cut was unfair, and inflated prices for players. So last year, it offered players the chance to buy the virtual currency direct from its own website, circumventing Apple and Google.

> That was explicitly against both companies' app store rules - so both removed Fortnite from their stores.

Explicitly against both companies was using OWN in app payment solutions thus bypassing their payment systems and 30% cut. But that whole EPIC drama is just another internet drama, nothing there is about users, online shops, or anything other than money.

Yet, at the end they can’t go and say “we don’t care about any of you, we just want more money!”. So they have to put this stunt in place. :-)

monkin··on Vantage has acquired ec2instances.info
I would like to see one thing, approximate data transfer cost for instance with input field to write an amount to calculate.
monkin··on Deleting Facebook
I deleted my main Facebook account in 2012.

Two years ago I need to test out some business features and API’s, so I made a new one. They needed my phone number, my gov ID, and my full name. I did everything but shortened my last name so it was “John S.” as I didn’t want it to be searchable. After a day they banned my account, they are dropping my requests to verify or delete it because name on ID isn’t the same as on Facebook account. My phone number is still attached to account. I even contacted a head of Facebook in my country to which she replied “sue us or be gone”.

Now, when I try to open a new one it’s deactivated second after confirming gov ID. So I’m banned for life. It’s sad what they have become, but I’m happy with the result. They could just stop profiling me on the internet thought. :-)

monkin··on Requests dropped when using Cloudflare’s free tier for a commercial project
It’s not the case with everyone, OP could wait until supports get back to him and investigates everything, and then push a pice on that. Bug -> Contact Support -> Wait for answer & solutions -> Happy or not ending.

What if he accuses them without justification? Which is probably a case here.

monkin··on Requests dropped when using Cloudflare’s free tier for a commercial project
Today there was a topic on HN about customers who complain about limiting free tiers. That’s a great example of it, especially from someone who provides paid SaaS product.

Free tier is awesome for small websites, keeping domains and many other things. But if you run business who earns, then just pay for that god damn thing, and stop ranting. :-)

monkin··on Proprietary Software Is Often Malware
Yes, they are intentionally fear mongering, just read most of their examples. It’s like reading tabloids.
monkin··on The Reshaped Mac Experience
I wrote a small piece a month ago, maybe this will help you in some way: https://dev.to/monkin/using-ipad-pro-for-work-2dbe it’s mostly accurate, but I made a switch from Linode to AWS this month.
monkin··on The Reshaped Mac Experience
Front-end (HTML/CSS/JS) and back-end (Go). Everything using Blink Shell + AWS EC2 instance. Blink is single most used app by me on an iPad (37 hours last week) with Safari (36 hours last week).

And yes, I like to work directly in the cloud that I use to deploy my sites. :)

monkin··on The Reshaped Mac Experience
+1 on that, I’m using iPad Pro as my only device for design & code for the last 9 months, and I couldn’t be happier. I moved to it after using over the years different MacBooks Pro and Mini’s. Yet, it’s not for everyone and many will find limitations that are impossible to live with.

I am looking forward to the next version of iPad OS to see what else they will improve. :)

monkin··on A Day in the Life of Your Data [pdf]
I’m wondering what kind full page response will Facebook make now. :D
