moistgorilla··on Cheap oil is taking shipping routes back to the 1800s
>However negligible the contribution to global CO₂ concentrations these 100-odd ships over the last couple of quarters have made, they still made it, and it was done to the world I have to live in without consulting anyone or anything but their owner's own bottom line.

You are consulted every time you purchase something created via the global economy. We had our chance to say something and we said "We want iphones"

moistgorilla··on The peril of talking to normal people
>Why are you calling someone "problematic" for not being neurotypical? Do you really think that's helpful?

I'm sorry but this is a huge overreaction. The op clearly stated he had a problem with talking to people because of their vagueness implying that the other person was "problematic". By stating the op is problematic instead of the "normal" person he is just stating that he is the source of the problem, not the normal person.

Anyway, there's a slight irony considering we are talking about people taking words to literally.

moistgorilla··on Obama announces Cuba trip
>The idea of saturating Cuba with Americans to try something different to awaken the people to alternatives is a good idea, at least better than what we've done for the past half century.

Except this wont happen. The natives will become (as they are now) second class to tourists and foreign businesses. The people this benefits are the Castro regime, foreign business, and people that want a new cheap tourist destination.

moistgorilla··on Python 3 in 2016
This is the ultimate HN circlejerk comment

>Scala, Haskell, Clojure, Erlang (or Elixir) or Go. And there's also the less popular ones like Haxe and Dart

Are you kidding me? Did you just list the languages you see threads on HN about? Scala and Go I could maybe understand if you needed the performance but the rest of the choices are just bad. Especially if you are trying to start a business instead of a functional programming bootcamp.

Also there is nothing inherently more difficult about deploying and distributing python compared to any of the languages you chose.

moistgorilla··on GitHub is undergoing a full-blown overhaul as execs and employees depart
I understood that, what I'm trying to state with my rhetorical question was that all his statement served to say was "Germany created the Nazis, you should feel guilt for that". And even if you think that people deserve some sort of retribution or culpability for the supposed actions of the ancestors (which I personally don't), Germany paid for it already considering the post war fallout and the Russian occupation of Eastern Germany.
moistgorilla··on GitHub is undergoing a full-blown overhaul as execs and employees depart
What are you even saying with this comment?
moistgorilla··on GitHub is undergoing a full-blown overhaul as execs and employees depart
Explain to me your subtle irony. Because frankly, it's so subtle it doesn't seem to exist.
moistgorilla··on Ask HN: Your Passive Income Suggestions?
Dividends but you are essentially right
moistgorilla··on Yahoo ex-employee sues, alleging performance review manipulation, gender bias
So apparently he had been given a promotion and took a leave of absence to participate in a prestigious fellowship and was fired for having a low performance review? What metrics were they going by for the performance review if he wasn't even working at the time?

I have a feeling this lawsuit will actually go somewhere.

moistgorilla··on Iran Complies with Nuclear Deal; Sanctions Are Lifted
Going from rich to poor is significantly harder than staying poor.
moistgorilla··on Obama administration ready to put $4B toward self-driving cars
>Poorly-driven vehicles will be with us for decades, because freedom

There is no right to drive like there is a right to own guns.

moistgorilla··on Obama administration ready to put $4B toward self-driving cars
Could you elaborate on why you think so? I could imagine significant cost savings from the energy that would be saved by removing all of the QoL things that go into a car for humans to be able to use them.
moistgorilla··on Chirimen, a Firefox OS-Powered IoT Single-Board Computer Developed by Mozilla
I'd rather see this than the pbasic boards...
moistgorilla··on FBI's 'Unprecedented' Hacking Campaign Targeted Over a Thousand Computers
I'm trying to understand how this was overreaching. They legally had access to the server that this website was hosted on, then they simply logged the real ip addresses that visited the website once they had access to the server. By accessing the content on the server the FBI possess aren't they voluntarily giving up their IP. Even if it's inadvertent?

I don't see how they are unjustly violating someone's privacy in this situation.

moistgorilla··on T-Mobile CEO to EFF: ‘Who the Fuck Are You?’
Facts aren't good when they disagree with my worldview.
moistgorilla··on T-Mobile CEO to EFF: ‘Who the Fuck Are You?’
People are so disenfranchised with their current providers that they will take the "underdogs" word at face value without doing any research to back it up.
moistgorilla··on T-Mobile CEO to EFF: ‘Who the Fuck Are You?’
I keep hearing this but the one time I went to the tmobile store for the supposedly cheaper offering, the price was exactly the same as what I get from ATT with less coverage.
moistgorilla··on Oculus Rift: Available for pre-order
Samsung Gear VR already exists and the difference between the experiences is night and day. As for Google Cardboard, the experience is just bad.
moistgorilla··on Oculus Rift: Available for pre-order
> sizeable discount for their paying retail customers

I think you are wrong on that. I honestly doubt the 6500 free units they are giving out would actually affect the price at all. Think about this, what would have been worse, your 6500 most loyal and vocal customers being pissed because the price of an oculus rift was doubled overnight or goodwill from dropping the price of a rift 10 dollars?

moistgorilla··on U.S. Federal Individual Income Tax Rates History, 1862-2013
Fighting for your life is a better incentive for productivity than money, who would have known.
moistgorilla··on Big IPO, Tiny Payout for Many Startup Workers
Sorry but I think your attitude is what is toxic. You are justifying people taking advantage of passionate coders.

> and you'll be doing your start-up coworkers a favor by leaving

So people fighting for what they are worth is detrimental to coworkers now? Maybe you and your coworkers need a reality check if you feel resentment towards one of your coworkers fighting for fair compensation.

moistgorilla··on Compiling to WebAssembly: It’s Happening
> Why should the situation be different on the desktop?

Because users want it to be. Whenever there isn't a significant performance hit people will always choose the browser solution. The only reason people download apps is because of performance and data limitations. Take those away and people will use the web based version.

moistgorilla··on Why a German billionaire says that pledges like Mark Zuckerberg’s are really bad
>democratically chosen

I think we can both agree that the term "democratically chosen" contains many positive connotations which simply don't apply to the current US government. If I were a billionaire, I personally would do as much as legally possible to keep my money out of the hands of the government and personally seeing that it is used for the betterment of society. Because frankly, the idea that the current US government is effectively spending this money for our betterment is ridiculous.

moistgorilla··on Why a German billionaire says that pledges like Mark Zuckerberg’s are really bad
do you have a source for that statement and does that source take into account the basically fraudulent "charities" that exist to pay their ceos
moistgorilla··on The 99% (of startups)
>The notion that if you do your best, you will succeed, is dangerous to naive entrepreneurs.

This isn't what he said in the article though. It's more about knowing your audience and the VCs in this case not knowing.

moistgorilla··on The 99% (of startups)
People age out but those that age out don't have the attitude of "old people", which in this case is "why would people watch this" and "this is a waste of time". (not trying to generalize older people but i think you guys know what type of people I'm talking about) Slowly esports and will become more and more mainstream (probably not completely mainstream but I can't predict the future) and more and more people will watch it.

Also, for the people that age out it seems like 3 more people join. Search viewership growth for games like League of Legends, Dota2, and CSGO and you will see that watching videogames is serious business.

moistgorilla··on The Yale Problem Begins in High School
>Hilariously, the two justifications for Eich as you've presented them would paint Hitler as moral.

First of all, neither are justifications. It was simply analyzing Eich's actions under a different moral framework as yours.

Second of all, yes, you could argue (this is the key word) Hitler's actions as moral (even though everyone would almost

Hilariously (not really actually) using your reasoning and your ethical framework you could also argue that paedophiles should not be discriminated against and that they deserve the right to sleep with and marry minors.

As society we don't want this so we choose to discriminate against child predators. Discrimination in this case is a pretty good thing.(I don't actually believe child predators should have this "right")

>As you're no doubt well aware, marriage rights encompass many other legal rights, and denying those rights is granting gays a form of second-class citizenship. This official form of discrimination combined with the private sector hate they receive for not being in a protected class causes gays ti have a higher rate of suicide than the rest of the population, continuing Turing's tradition.

I don't really understand what you are trying to say here. Yes, I'm aware of these things. They don't matter in the scope of this argument. You say that reason and logic drive your believes about what is moral but this entire section of the post I quoted is just an appeal to emotion.

Also don't you find it ironic that you can justify discriminating against someone because of their beliefs but you can't justify discriminating against someone because of their sexual identity?

And before you respond with an argument telling me you can choose what you believe. Can you really?

moistgorilla··on Paris Attacks Plot Was Hatched in Plain Sight
Ah yes, the Brooklyn Bridge terrorist that was trying to use a jackhammer to bring it down. Thank you NSA for preventing this tragedy that could only prevented with pervasive surveillance.
moistgorilla··on The Yale Problem Begins in High School
> Under the framework of cold rational logic. In what ways could Eich's actions be construed as morally positive without resorting to superstitions and other faulty logic?

Yeah that isn't an ethical framework. You were judging his actions under the framework of moral utilitarianism. The flaws with this can be found in a google search.

His actions could be construed as moral under a rule-utilitarian moral framework and a kantian virtue ethic framework. (The virtues being participating in politics and standing up for what you believe.)

> and oppressing people to the point of ingesting cyanide is not going to help grow a scientific community large enough to keep me alive as long as I would like

This is a straw man. Oppression of gays in the US amounted to not giving them the right to marriage and not having them be protected in the work place for their sexuality. Neither of which amount to "oppressing people to the point of ingesting cyanide".

moistgorilla··on The Yale Problem Begins in High School
> financial

Isn't finance the place where being clean shaven is almost necessary if you want to succeed?
