moelf··on YouTube TV, which costs $73 a month, agrees to end "$600 less than cable" ads
that's why https://sponsor.ajay.app/ exists
moelf··on Spacedrive – an open source cross-platform file explorer
The first screen after "welcome" is a login

why do I want to login a file explorer man this timeline is weird

moelf··on Chapel 1.32
Julia? not only it's 1-index, it's also very imperative
moelf··on Productivity has grown faster in Western Europe than in America
I'm almost certain population size and sectors play a huge role but I don't see a way to control for it (it's basically characteristic of the country)
moelf··on Krita fund has no corporate support
I think they could be drawing those menus with Krita
moelf··on Krita fund has no corporate support
https://krita.org/en/item/intel-becomes-first-krita-developm...

maybe that has ended

moelf··on Krita fund has no corporate support
is there an interchangeable format for this? .tiff? .ora?
moelf··on Krita fund has no corporate support
the Diamond tier seems to be a studio, but yeah I totally agree.
moelf··on Review: Framework Laptop finally gets an AMD Ryzen config–and it’s pretty good
nothing is stopping others from selling "Framework-compatible parts", the CAD for all bays, expansion bays, etc. are open source https://github.com/FrameworkComputer
moelf··on What every software developer must know about Unicode in 2023

  > The only modern language that gets it right is Swift:
arguably not true:

  julia> using Unicode

  # for some reason HN doesn't allow emoji
  julia> graphemes(" ")
  length-1 GraphemeIterator{String} for " "

  help?> graphemes
  search: graphemes

  graphemes(s::AbstractString) -> GraphemeIterator

Return an iterator over substrings of s that correspond to the extended graphemes in the string, as defined by Unicode UAX #29. (Roughly, these are what users would perceive as single characters, even though they may contain more than one codepoint; for example a letter combined
with an accent mark is a single grapheme.)
moelf··on Mozilla.social mastodon waitlist
I didn't get invite code beforehand I just signed in my Firefox account and it allowed me to register, maybe the sign up page message needs to be updated
moelf··on Fx – Terminal JSON Viewer
Vue
moelf··on Apple finally put USB-C in new iPhone, but limited to 23-year-old USB 2.0 speeds
In their own launch presentation, Apple was taunting how the USB-C port now enables "professional" film makers to shot 4K60FPS directly to external storage
moelf··on A group of open source Android apps without ads and unnecessary permissions
https://f-droid.org/en/packages/net.osmand.plus/

it literally is (see `.plus`); in fact, if you install from F-droid, and then open Google Play to look at OsmAnd+, `Install` button is gone, just `Open`

moelf··on Julia and Mojo Mandelbrot Benchmark
For a similar "benchmark" (also Mandelbrot) but took place in Jax repo discussion: https://github.com/google/jax/discussions/11078#discussionco...
moelf··on Android 14 blocks all modification of system certificates, even as root?
huh, but on iOS you have apps that can ignore your VPN connection... https://restoreprivacy.com/latest-ios-found-to-bypass-vpn-co...
moelf··on Rare oxygen isotope detected

moelf··on Rare oxygen isotope detected
simulating atom is hard because the interaction between protons and neutrons are described by not only EM force but also Strong force, and in particular, Strong force at this low energy (as oppose to what happens at the LHC) is hard, partly because https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asymptotic_freedom , basically our usual physics tricks of "perturbation approximation" doesn't work because the Strong force diverge at lower energy
moelf··on C.R. Rao: A Life in Statistics (2020)
CERN campus in Geneva is full of roads named after physicists: https://goo.gl/maps/t1x4MBXwXKE1mdGb9

but I guess those are more internal roads :P

moelf··on Fortran
make a question post on Julia discourse, many people including me are more than happy to do free work for you!
moelf··on Fortran
sorry but maybe give Julia a try?
moelf··on The complete sequence of a human Y chromosome
I guess nih will update this soon: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/assembly/GCF_009914755.1/ since it was gap-less except for Y chromosome
moelf··on Replace peer review with “peer replication” (2021)
I wish we can replicate the LHC
moelf··on Using C++ as a scripting language, part 8
yeah... basically... in fact they're leaning more into JIT + string programming now and seeing big JIT latency etc. (imo is kinda ~approaching Julia from C++ side)
moelf··on Petalisp: Elegant High Performance Computing
the name Petalisp cracks me up, because that's basically what Julia is:

1. Peta - https://www.hpcwire.com/off-the-wire/julia-joins-petaflop-cl...

2. Lisp - https://discourse.julialang.org/t/cas-benchmarks-symbolics-j...

Julia has a lisp origin story, see also: https://github.com/JeffBezanson/femtolisp

moelf··on Efficient Jagged Arrays
there's a whole ecosystem in Python originally developed for high energy physics data processing: https://github.com/scikit-hep/awkward all because Numpy demands square N-dimensional array

Same technique used everywhere, here's a simple Julia pkg for the same thing: https://github.com/JuliaArrays/ArraysOfArrays.jl/blob/3a6f5b...

But Julia at least has the decency to just support ragged Vector{Vector} out of the box, and it's not that slow

moelf··on Wayland is pretty good
use newer Nvidia driver helps https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Wayland
moelf··on North Korean market prices suggest serious food shortages
but the great famine was very much man(Mao)-made... of course the economic boom was a great achievement, but it's different from what you're suggesting I think.
moelf··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
Apple TV is one of those apple devices you can't use unless you're "apple enough" -- you can't even set it up without having an iOS device to do 2FA.
moelf··on Mojo – a new programming language for AI developers
This is too real and any of the great investment of manpower (e.g. Tensorflow for Swift) if happened to Julia would probably be 10x or 100x in terms of ROI -- just look at how few devs and line of code Julia's alternative to pandas/numpy/ML/autodidf/plotting has. If Julia ecosystem can be somewhat competitive while only having part time and researchers' side project contributors, it WILL thrive if properly invested.
