moeamaya··on Four-day week trial: study finds lower stress but no cut in output
Of all industries, you would think software companies would use some of the efficiency gains and insane profit margins to work less?

This is the logic we have at Monograph (hiring engineers btw) and we've had 4 day 32-hour work weeks for over three years now. One engineer on the team likes to take Wednesdays off which we affectionately call the "mid-weekend".

If you have more interest HuffPo and Lynne from Key Values wrote a bit about or working style: https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/four-day-working-week-o...

moeamaya··on How to Convert a Free User to a Premium User
I’m exactly the same! Starting paying for Notion once I’d received the value upfront and felt like paying was worth it.

Dropbox - still on free after getting lots of free space through promos

Spotify - family account

GitHub - paid for personal until the recent change

My takeaway, none of these freemium methods are “bad” but Notion felt the best as a consumer. I talk about Notion way more than the others and I believe their pricing model makes that possible

moeamaya··on Ending our Medium integration
As a fellow bootstrapper, I loved being a transloadit customer back in the day (old product we ran). Amazing video encoding product and awesome customer support over Skype. Thanks for slogging through the grind!
moeamaya··on Build your own Mint
Just signed up! Really compelling product.

Random, but you using the Harry's Rails app by chance?

moeamaya··on Ask HN: What's the best book on modern UI/UX?
It's more of a reference book so you continue earning back that investment over time.

You can get a lot of his tips for free here in this curated Twitter Moment: https://twitter.com/i/moments/880688233641848832

moeamaya··on Googlers Write to CEO Demanding Equal Treatment for Contractors
Agree in a very similar situation and hope to continue this format of working.

But that said this equality effort isn't about folks like us, it's about helping out those that need healthcare, holiday pay, etc. I'm on the side of those in need getting the benefits over our privileged lives being mildly altered.

moeamaya··on Netlify raises $30M to replace webservers with Application Delivery Network
With images it can definitely add up. On S3 + Cloudfront, I was paying about $85/mo for coolbackgrounds.io
moeamaya··on Netlify raises $30M to replace webservers with Application Delivery Network
I have a few popular HN-launched static sites on Netlify including https://servicelist.io/. Not only do they provide a seamless hosting and CDN (cache-expiring) experience but they also have a wonderful multi-user CMS that eliminates about half of my Rails sites!

I'll reiterate a few other sentiments in this thread, it feels a bit too good to be true. Even with 300k monthly traffic, not paying a dime seems like a precarious situation to be in for a free service.

moeamaya··on Stripe Is Now a $20B Company
That's great on Stripe, but tbh your product is awesome. If I was an angel investor, I'd happily put money into this and recommend you to my family. Keep up the great work!
moeamaya··on Announcing Gatsby 2.0.0
Somehow missed this and I’m a big PH user, but you’ve built an awesome product!

Love the simplicity and way you’ve refined the marketing around your app.

moeamaya··on Building a Kickass Portfolio
After 5 years of not having a portfolio, put one up earlier this year! https://moeamaya.com/. Interestingly my best project leads have come from launching the site.
moeamaya··on Show HN: Indie.vc for LatAm
Love the idea, but the sites feels eerily similar to http://tiny.website/. Might want develop a bit more of your own investment brand.
moeamaya··on Applications for YC W19 Are Open
Austen from Lambda had a really succinct reply in favor of still doing YC. Context dependent but tldr: focus on important metrics.

moeamaya··on Cool Backgrounds
Working on this. Tough at the moment since the particles background gets GPU intensive. Need to pause, resize canvas while maintaining frame, download image then resize back down and start animating again.
moeamaya··on Cool Backgrounds
Thanks! Feel free to reach out, email in bio.

Thanks for the love Blair!! icalc is a project by two of my good buddies, and I promise we got plenty more coming down the pipeline.

moeamaya··on Cool Backgrounds
No that's definitely not just you. I meant to update those, and will push that change up soon.

Probably default to 2560 x 1440 until it is customizable. Thoughts?

moeamaya··on Cool Backgrounds
Appreciate it! Lots of care and time went into seemingly "useless" details but I think the sum is a bit nicer than the parts.
moeamaya··on Cool Backgrounds
Going to be CC0 once I can figure out how the dynamic images work for copyright issues.
moeamaya··on Cool Backgrounds
It's all CSS animations timed with transition-delay (but triggered with js adding a "is-active" class).

moeamaya··on Ask HN: Examples of great landing pages?
Even more than bravado, I’ve dedicated my entire life’s work to this claim.

Design is incredibly undervalued on HN, and I make contrarian claims to not only ruffle a few feathers, but because it’s a fundamental thesis of mine.

Note aesthetics are also a functional beauty to me, I enjoy both refactoring code and typesetting a landing page as part of the design process.

moeamaya··on Ask HN: Examples of great landing pages?
Agreed.

Client examples are indeed impossible to determine direct outcomes. But to add context, they added two team members in that time but the largest change came from landing larger clients, which was the whole point of the redesign.

Also added the personal example as a more controlled experiment to show the value that design can have.

moeamaya··on Ask HN: Examples of great landing pages?
No aggression perceived.

The best client example is Groove (https://www.groovehq.com/). In 2014 they hired us to take the existing site (https://web.archive.org/web/20141223145657/https://www.groov...) and make it attractive to serious customers who can "trust" their company based on the site. Went from 1M ARR to 5M in 18 months.

A more concrete personal example is when we ranked "HTML Color Codes" with essentially zero feature improvements beyond nice UI/UX. Now ranked #1 in Google for several queries...making $5k/mo passively. More detailed write up on Indie Hackers (https://www.indiehackers.com/interview/growing-to-1-300-mo-b...).

moeamaya··on Ask HN: Examples of great landing pages?
Partially agree.

Willing to put a bet down you could 3x traffic/conversion with design improvement.

moeamaya··on Growing from 0 to 4M users on our fashion app with vertical machine learning
Please feel free to advocate for a brand you like. I’m a 2 jeans 8 tshirts kinda guy too, and been struggling finding shirts that I’d recommend.

Everlane ($ garbage), American Apparel ($ bad with new owners), Alternative ($$ so-so). Best shirts were the BDG brand ($ soft, last 4 years with weekly wear) at Urban Outfitters but they’ve been discontinued.

moeamaya··on Funding Yourself as a Free Software Developer
When I saw this topic pop up on HN, I instinctively went to check my CodeSponsor dashboard and saw no activity.

Didn't think too much of it and came back here and saw the news :( That's too bad Github decided against continuing the service, it's such a great way for developers to maintain their roles and still provide a bit of funding. Good luck on your next version!

moeamaya··on Taking Gatsby for a spin
Ueno is a well known design agency in San Francisco, and the recently wrote about how they convince clients to use Contentful and Static over Wordpress: https://loremipsum.ueno.co/the-wordpress-question-355b4a2b75....

We're doing the exact same thing and have built quite a few sites to date: http://htmlcolorcodes.com/ https://wordcounter.io/

moeamaya··on Stanford CS007: Personal Finance For Engineers
Appreciate the concrete math, it helps ground the abstraction of living expenses.

The missing piece here is the salary inflation over a very short period of time.

As a Stanford engineer, one should use the leapfrog technique (stay at a job no more than 18mo) to increase your salary by 2x in 5 years. That would mean by 27-years-old, this person should be in the $250k range, 35% tax = $160k usable, $15k 401k = $12k/mo.

YMMV, but this is should be entirely doable by the median Stanford grad.
