mode80··on Side Projects
I think for every delicious side project that succeeds "in spite of itself" there are 10 side projects who don't fulfill their destiny of greatness -- because they're missing the dedication ingredient that most startups require.
mode80··on Jessica Livingston
HN may be noisy, but PG is all signal
mode80··on The Risk of a Billion-Dollar Valuation in Silicon Valley
The article makes it sound like a liquidation preference is some new phenomenon that explains the recent surge of ostensible $1B valuations. In fact this has been a standard deal term since the 90s.
mode80··on Why telephone keypads are arranged the way they are
'We still "Hang up" when we want to terminate a call, and this refers to the action of placing the receiver back onto the hook of a phone ...'

oh my god. I'm old.

mode80··on What is Ethereum?
Fuzziness is a feature when you benefit and a bug when you get burned. I'd like an option with no ambiguity.
mode80··on What is Ethereum?
The example is pseudo-code and assumes a future with smart-property domain registrars. A better example might have been a smart contract trust which is 100% doable today.

There are other examples under the Samples menu at etherscripter.com. Also see ethereum.org.

mode80··on What is Ethereum?
Smart contracts can define AND ENFORCE the transfer of smart property without intervention. The world of smart property today is limited to digital currency. But if you "skate where the puck is going" it's not hard to imagine other digital goods being smart-property-enabled and eventually physical things like cars, door-locks etc.

A smart contract CAN incorporate a digital sign-off from third party verifiers. But it's not always necessary nor is it a defining feature. God's mercy notwithstanding.

mode80··on The Long Tail of the English Language
I took exactly this approach to learning passable German when I lived there a couple months. Unfortunately, most Germans would much rather practice their English on you than let you practice German on them. So I gave up and let them.
mode80··on Ask HN: How do you politely refuse to disclose previous salary information?
Can I suggest a different approach? Instead of dodging the question, put yourself in a position that you're happy to answer. "My last contract gig paid $100/hr. That's $200k yearly on an annual basis."
mode80··on Amazon Echo
This is the first time I've laughed reading HN. :)
mode80··on The 75-Year Saga Behind a Game That Teaches Preschoolers to Code
My 4 yr old daughter loves Robot Turtles. That anyone can say that is testament to its awesomeness. The board game format is part of the appeal and allows a kind of interaction (with you) that'd be missing on iPad. But check out code.org for a software alternative with comparable goals.
mode80··on Sourcegraph: Search code, jump around source, see real usage examples
I'm 2 weeks into building the thing I just watched you demo. Cue sinking feeling.

It looks awesome. Bravo.

mode80··on Three biggest Internet companies in each country
Log scale seems a bad choice. (Did you gather that US companies exceed the value of all others combined?)
mode80··on TypeScript 0.9 – What’s Improved
The best recent development in TypeScript IMHO is there's now a usable Sublime Text plugin that makes code completion and other goodness available outside Visual Studio. https://github.com/Railk/T3S
mode80··on Very Short Reply Expected
When sending a VSR that might otherwise be rude, I just add "Sent from my iPhone" at the bottom. Don't tell anyone.
mode80··on Why didn't the Romans invent the Internet?
In a thousand years someone will speculate about why the people of today didn't just build and exploit [x]. Stop messing around and go build [x].
mode80··on My Top Sublime Text 2 Plugins
I've been waiting for this! Thanks tednaleid.
mode80··on David Rusenko's 2012 Startup School Talk
If you're looking for education watch something else. If you could use some inspiration, this is awesome.
mode80··on IBM 5150 emulated in JavaScript
This gave me nostalgia chills.
mode80··on Bitcoinica MtGox account compromised
Since my name has appeared in connection with this calamity, I'm linking here to my response:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=58008;sa=...

Bitcoinica is far the most toxic investment of my career. I still applaude founder Zhou Tong's bravery for creating it and wish dearly that the change in management had never taken place.

Bitcoin technology holds great potential but I fear there are still many hard lessons ahead.

mode80··on We’re hiring a Lead Visual Designer
If someone who feels offended by swear words would not fit your company culture, perhaps you should keep it.
mode80··on How Three Germans Are Cloning the Web
For what it's worth, I'm a native English speaker and wondered the same things.
