mocha_nate··on Amazon reaches 10k Rivian electric delivery vans in US
Same in Austin, TX. Although I bought stock so can’t decide if I’m just seeing because I’m on the lookout or if there are actually more and more on the road.

I don’t own one, but the SUVs look really nice. For some reason I don’t like the truck design even though it’s very similar to SUV.

mocha_nate··on The design thinking movement is absurd (2018)
I empathize with that as I went to grad school in a school of architecture. Ended up specializing in software in their department of urban planning. Calling yourself a designer instead of an architect is just a way to be more inclusive to landscape architects, interior designers, material engineers, and everyone else who works in a the design software space.

Design thinking is just a concept for thinking about problems. Whether you're a plumber or a fashion designer, solving your problem with software first is the antithesis of design thinking. It's just a philosophy of first principles built for anyone who creates physical or digital products.

mocha_nate··on I thought I wanted to be a professor, then I served on a hiring committee (2021)
At a large university in Texas, I had two professors - one amazing in everyway, the other not. The amazing professor published great research, wrote well, and had great teaching skills. The other professor gave lackluster classes, published research that was routine, and shocked me that they could be teaching at this level (inspiring in a pessimistic way).

Both up for tenure - the amazing professor was passed on because the other had a more desirable background. Both women. As a grad student, I understood the difficult of hiring, but this was honestly incredible.

I thought of this when I read the following from the article: "I was startled to learn that academic achievements were not always what mattered most." and "only to fall short of securing a faculty position due to factors outside my control."

Just a different story from academia.

mocha_nate··on Amazon’s electric Rivian vans have delivered 150M packages
i saw the same video! the thing i was thinking about is, event though Amazon is a huge investor, the specs are so well designed for this kind of work that they could start selling to UPS, USPS, FedEx, etc.
mocha_nate··on Show HN: TxtNet Browser – Browse the Web over SMS, No Wi-Fi/Mobile Data Needed
that reminds me of how my first blackberry used to function. it was mindblowing at the time.
mocha_nate··on Lonely individuals process the world in idiosyncratic ways
*first year University Students, if I read that correctly. The first year is so wild, because you haven't quite found your social circle yet.
mocha_nate··on Ask HN: How are you using GPT to be productive?
i did the same! i received very helpful and reasonable responses.
mocha_nate··on Rivian in talks with Amazon to remove exclusivity clause of EV van agreement
UPS, FedEx, and others are going to want these trucks as well, so opening up your customer-base just makes sense.
mocha_nate··on U.S. credit card debt jumps 18.5% and hits a record $930.6B
So, you don't have any savings and are using only credit card? You don't have a means to pay off the card, so are using it with the hope of getting a job to eventually pay it off? Just trying to make sure I understand and am not judging
mocha_nate··on The hype around esports is fading as investors and sponsors dry up
100% agree. I started getting into Twitch during the beginning of the pandemic and got to know a lot of people who make money via online tournaments. The main channels I watch are Call of Duty and Super People. It's fascinating watching these streamers compete.

If I could invest as an average joe, I would.

mocha_nate··on What would make AWS even better
i was told that AWS Glue solves the "15 minutes or more" need that lambda cannot provide. never tried it so i cant say if its a good substitute.

that's the only service i see OP did not mention

mocha_nate··on Facebook's TikTok-like redesign marks sunset of social networking era
100% agree
mocha_nate··on Record-setting quantum entanglement connects two atoms across 20 miles
not teleportation. i see it as the precuror to literal instant messaging. writing a message with two entangled receivers could mean sending messages faster than the speed of light.... just me dreaming though
mocha_nate··on Cancelling Student Debt Is Unforgivable
> ...almost no student in American has made a payment in over two years.

Uhhhhh... I have been aggressively paying off my loans during this freeze. I'm not expecting the forgiveness of my debt.

mocha_nate··on “World’s best” Guitar Hero player was a cheat
I was at a family house party and an 8 year old came up to his mom asking for Admin rights in Roblox (we found out -- so he could cheat). He was very upset because EVERYBODY DOES IT and he felt left behind.
mocha_nate··on Writing tools I learned from The Economist
Seriously. When I see that, I do a mini-eyeroll and scroll to find the point of the article. The Economist does a good job of putting content first.
mocha_nate··on Show HN: 400-Line Binance CryptoCurrency Bot
Great idea. Thank you for sharing! I’ve had this same thought with Tesla’s stock
mocha_nate··on Show HN: 400-Line Binance CryptoCurrency Bot
Haha and much much worse
mocha_nate··on Undercover reporter reveals life in a Polish troll farm
Yeah. And the original statement was ”vastly different”... Definitely disagreeing on that first point
mocha_nate··on I wasted 10 weeks of my life and $1900
In Alexis ohanian’s book he says you can still find them if you go back far enough on the site.
mocha_nate··on Ionic React
Big fan of this update!

mocha_nate··on Why New York City Stopped Building Subways (2018)
The chart about cost hides how dramatic the cost difference is and it bothers me. Note the increment of .25 billion to .5 billion on the y axis without the design reflecting that shift
mocha_nate··on Why Are Some Societies More Entrepreneurial than Others?
I agree 100%. Also, fun fact: the Netherlands had the first stock corporation ever: “east India trading company”
mocha_nate··on Serverless: slower and more expensive
Thank you for writing this! It’s always interesting to see how other people set up their stacks.

Recently, I created some twitter bots to test out for fun and put them on Lambda with a 12 hr schedule to run from SNS... I was sending 15 tweets a day (from ~15 accounts) and my bill was $35/mth... That is silly

mocha_nate··on Time anxiety: is it too late?
I enjoyed this. Also, I now have some vocabulary for things that bother me, which is pretty nice.
mocha_nate··on The WeWork IPO
Just dropping in to say the comment threads on this page are refreshing! Way better than what you’d find on reddit, Twitter, etc
mocha_nate··on Why the French love to say no
Pretty sure you can mix and match and it depends on the emphasis and tone of the speaker:

“Do you serve Pepsi here?”

-(no) “yeah no, we are all out”

-(no) “no, yeah we are all out”

-(yes) “no yeah, we got it”

-(yes) “yeah, no we got it”

mocha_nate··on Older Americans are alone half their waking hours, on average
“abandon” is an interesting word choice. Moving isn’t always about moving away from something, sometimes it’s about moving towards a happy prospect. Your family could respect the action.
mocha_nate··on Money laundering in the UK
