mns··on ASML staffing changes could result in a net reduction of around 1700 positions
As I was following Siemens Energy in these years, I remember them getting a huge bailout, or you can call it help or whatever, at one point and from there on the stock price started going up.
mns··on Delta single handle ball faucets (1963)
Is this a US thing? We renovated the apartment in Germany in the last year and every faucet and piece of equipment that we got has a manual including a table with list of parts and technical drawings and how to take it apart. We also got from the original owner all the manuals of the existing things, and this helped a lot in finding the proper part to replace and fix the bathtub drain. None of this is old stuff, the building is 15 years old.
mns··on I was banned from Claude for scaffolding a Claude.md file?
And not only that, but YOU need to pay to work, starting at only 199 per month.
mns··on How Thomas Mann wrote The Magic Mountain
I started reading it because I saw it recommended here 2-3 years ago on one of the end of year book threads. I’m still somewhere at around 40% according to my Kindle. I like the style and the way Mann paints the world so to say, like the world it creates in your imagination, but I find it so dragged and boring, I just can’t get myself to read it for long.
mns··on 2025 Letter
Relentless work, or simply not caring about the people that you need to crunch in order to achieve the outcomes that you want. The western world could also build things fast again and innovate faster, we just seem to value human life a bit more now that we used to...
mns··on 2025 Letter
The attitude here is quite astounding, seeing how any criticism of the author or this piece is seen as some sort of reductionism of his views and european smugness (?!?), all the while the author reduces an entire nation (Germany in this case) to the anecdote of a Georgian mass murderer, probably one of the most ruthless and diabolical people that ever existed, so yeah, very balanced discussion here.
mns··on I'm a developer for a major food delivery app
Engineers are completely blindsided by technology. I work with some brilliant people, technically speaking, but in some cases they seem to have 0 awareness towards the things they are building and how that affects the people using the things that we built. I had a couple of months ago an engineer that's working on various AI things in our company telling me how we can use and build an AI tool to rate the performance of people in the company and people that use our platform (let's say similar to all these mini-job platforms) just to know who to fire if they are not efficient. At no point in time was he thinking of the people, all he could think of was the algorithm and AI and how amazing it could be to do this.
mns··on JetBrains cancels Fleet
To be honest, I'm a bit annoyed that I installed maybe 2-3 extensions, and in the last year or so whenever I open one of their IDEs I need to update anywhere from 10 to 25 extensions. What are these things? Where did they come from and why do I have them, I used to see only the extensions that I actually installed, and now there's all kind of stuff that I thought was basic functionality.
mns··on Garry Tan claims Zoho will be out of business due to vibe coding
Considering how much money they invested in countless AI VS Code forks and other vibe coding platforms, he needs to hype up the market.
mns··on The time has finally come for geothermal energy
It probably also depends on where you are and how deep you need to drill. It seems to be working out for Munich in Germany, there are a couple of city districts (including mine) that are heated by geothermal, and they invested in this since the early 2000s. Can't really find an english page for the whole project though: https://www.swm.de/unternehmen/geothermie
mns··on Are We Doomed?
Some countries are even working against people having children. Germany introduced a new law that now if the parents have their combined salaries over a certain amount, you get 0 child care. And the funny thing is that that limit is very low for people living in a big city. This policy came from the Greens actually, which are supposed to be more left leaning. But they couldn't care about this, or women or families, for them anyone who earns a bit above average needs to be punished. In our case, just when we were actually thinking of having a baby, we realised that if we actually would do it, our income would be basically more than halved because my wife earns even more than me, so not only would we earn way less, but we would earn way less with an extra child in our family, so yeah, thanks for the support.
mns··on End of Japanese community
The “I’m sorry you feel this way” is the first thing you learn from that HR workshop about communication when you get a promotion where you have to manage people.

The thing is that having a lot of people working in corporate environments, where you constantly need to be political and backstab others to achieve some task you've been given, this is the norm, so for many this is normal, the type of stuff where they say: I'm just trying to be helpful and constructive, but for anyone not having time for this corporate double-speak, this seems rude and condescending.

mns··on Studio Ghibli, Bandai Namco, Square Enix Demand OpenAI to Stop Using Their IP
It's fair use if you do it, it's stealing if someone else does it to you, this is the normal playbook of the likes of Meta, Microsoft, OpenAi and the others.
mns··on Affinity Studio now free
Once they manage to get enough Adobe customers on there and get some good market share, the investors will want their money multiplied (and you can't realistically do that just with AI features), so they will use the same playbook like any other business out there that used VC money to take over a market, and make you pay, probably first for proper support, and then more and more updates will come only to the + subscriptions.
mns··on Affinity Studio now free
Any type of updates (bugs, security, OS support) will go only to the Canva version, no part of my comment was about the new hotness or that being the reason I bought any of the licenses.
mns··on Affinity Studio now free
Yes, it did change: I want to use the old apps and I don't want to use a Canva account. I can still use them, but will never get any updates any more.
mns··on Affinity Studio now free
Devastated about this. Good for them for making money on the sale to Canva, but still, this is a sad day. Studio is now freemium, in the future probably more and more features (outside of AI) will be added in the subscription, and you will end up with an app full of disabled features and pop-ups encouraging you to subscribe and unlock the new and shiny thing.

There is absolutely nothing in the world that anyone can say to convince me that this is not the end for Affinity. Every single product that went through this ended up being an ad data gathering subscription pushing unusable app for anything useful.

I have both a V1 and V2 license. V2 is probably now useless considering that it will never get any updates. This marks the death of one of the last popular pay once and use forever apps (in the sense that a V3 with new features will never exist).

mns··on Samsung makes ads on smart fridges official with upcoming software update
Is Liebherr not a thing in the US? At least in Europe all the Miele fridges are basically Liebherr with different interior setup and the Miele logo slapped on them. No smart things, unless you buy the smart box that you can attach, but otherwise they are quite reliable and solid.
mns··on OpenAI says over a million people talk to ChatGPT about suicide weekly
But one is a company ran by sociopaths that have no empathy and couldn't care less about anything but money, while the other is a human that at least studied the field all their life.
mns··on Armed police swarm student after AI mistakes bag of Doritos for a weapon
A bunch of companies and people invested unimaginable amounts of money in these technologies in the hope they will multiply that money. They will showe it down our throats no matter what, this isn't about security and making the world a better place, saving lives or preventing bad things to happen, this is strictly about those people and companies making as much money as possible, or at least for now not losing the money they invested.
mns··on Criticisms of “The Body Keeps the Score”
Without even knowing who the author of the blog post was, found that the article is making some good points, especially showing how some of the claims in the book have no real base, and the studies that are cited sometimes have nothing to do with the conclusions that the author of the book draws out.

But the interesting part is how the comment section here is in part people attacking the author of the blog post on a personal level. In the end, probably the book is a good read and fun, that's why it has such reviews and it became so popular, it also validates people and tells them what they want to hear, it doesn't matter that some?!? of the science behind it is invented or misinterpreted, people just want to feel good about themselves and read or listen to things that validate their opinions. But it does show that this whole religious approach of "we believe in science" is just that, a religion, because people in general just want to hear things that reinforce their opinions, when science is actually about constant learning, experimenting, change, listening and accepting new things.

mns··on Power over Ethernet (PoE) basics and beyond
PoE actually saved me, or at least helped me simplify some things. My router is in one place, while the distribution box where all the cable conduits lead to every room in another place. The distribution box (where also the optical cable originally comes from to the router) has no power plugs. I wanted to have Ethernet plugs in every room (especially for any fixed devices), so I managed to find (quite difficult in Germany) a PoE powered switch for the distribution box with no plugs available, get a PoE injector to power it and from there on to wire and install Ethernet plugs in all rooms.
mns··on Dutch government takes control of Chinese-owned chipmaker Nexperia
I don't think people are blaming China. You can see this from all the extremist movements in Europe. People are blaming politicians and the "elite". They gave away for free all the technological advancements and knowledge to China to make huge profits and become filthy rich, and now they complaining that no one is buying their expensive outdated cars and other goods that people can't afford because they don't have decent jobs any more and the economy is bad. The only goal with outsourcing everything to China was to make as much money as possible for themselves, with no regard for the future and how this will affect our economies in the long run, but that doesn't matter when you are rich, for now.
mns··on Nielsen Norman Group on iOS 26 usability
I actually like it. There are glitches and various issues, but it still feels solid and something that Apple would do, not Microsoft with Vista. Looks like something funky and a breath of fresh air compared with all the boring flat designs that took over everything.
mns··on Americans increasingly see legal sports betting as a bad thing for society
I also left my country years ago and come back once or twice a year. This year the city hall introduced a new parking app that can't be installed on a phone with an app store registered outside Romania, because the freaking parking app has a gambling section and they decided to go with gambling instead of supporting a universal parking app (like the previous one that they had) available also for tourists from outside the country. I called them out on that and said that they can't make it available outside the country because of legal issues with the gambling section....
mns··on Homeowner baffled after washing machine uses 3.6GB of internet data a day (2024)
On Fritzbox you need to enable it for each device individually. Good thing I saw this post, as I wanted to check out what some of my appliances are doing and enabled it for a few of them a month ago.
mns··on YouTube says it'll bring back creators banned for Covid and election content
Because in that case you wouldn't be able to use disinformation yourself.
mns··on Tomorrow's emoji today: Unicode 17.0
Or a submarine :(
mns··on iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max
It’s a phone, who or what are those pros that use this in a pro way? And I’m saying this as a pro owner who only got it for the camera, which I use to take casual photos
mns··on The Storm Hits the Art Market
That's actually great! This comment thread is such a breath of fresh air. We moved this year to a new place and was looking at art, and I had the feeling that art also became some sort of mass produced low cost product, and I wanted to look into smaller artists and original pieces. Loved the works of the artist you mentioned as well as some of the other ones mentioned above.
