Of course a lot of people are trying to leech revenues in Affiliate marketing, that why affiliate need to be reviewed and monitored. It's not a scam you just accepted to do business with people without checking where their traffic comes from.
Its possible to disable it but it's enabled by default. Lets see how long they last before Google strike back !
Free has always been in trouble with Google because they don't want to pay for the peering.
I have tried to use @font-face on a large website where all the users don't have up to date. All was just getting emails about old versions of safari crashing, ipads crashing chrome crashing etc.
I agree with you TypeKit wont be useful forever but for now it's the best solution I have found.
