mnky9800n··on Top researchers leave USA for the Netherlands (in Dutch)
I apologise if this is overly negative. It is based on my experience working as a soft money researcher (my own grants) at a Dutch university. My opinions may not be shared.

In my experience The Netherlands is a rather unsupportive place to do research. There is essentially no money from the government that will pay salaries in full, especially early career salaries (vini, vidi, vici). I have had friends win ERC grants (millions in euros) that were fired as a result because there was not a space in the department to hire them full time (Dutch work law requires contracts to become permanent after a certain number of years of working). Departments also seem to have glass ceilings for non Dutch. Researchers are often given large teaching commitments that cannot be bought out with grants. University incubators seem to be better suited to let professors pretend to be start up founders then actual innovation centers. I have tried on multiple occasions to engage the local incubator and have always been run around. Yet local Dutch have no issues. The rules seem to be different for Dutch than for foreigners. A foreign colleague was offered a lucrative consulting contract (a normal thing for successful professors at other universities). The Dutch university he was at refused to let him take it except under the understanding the money would be entirely consumed by the university and he would receive no compensation for bringing in private money even though he would be doing all of the work. Meanwhile the Dutch colleague in the next office was allowed to start a private consulting agency through the local incubator and spend as much time as he wanted working in the start up. The universities publish reports how progressive they are by evaluating professors on teaching and outreach meanwhile having internal department expectations of PhD students to publish at least four first author papers or are not allowed to graduate (on four year contracts with one year full time teaching commitment). In my experience it is rare that PhD students finish on time. As one adminstrator told me, “university promoters are more interested in promoting their careers then their PhD students” (promoter is the word used for the adviser). The universities also disallow working outside of typical hours and there is no ability to work in your own office on the weekends. Also, recently they defended against this, but it will come up again, the government has discussed changing the tax law such that startup shares will have real world value so new valuations become taxable events.

This all is not atypical to universities world wide. But in the Netherlands I have not found a place that made me feel like I could work to the best of my ability and at the cutting edge. This is unfortunate. It’s nice to live here but I’m leaving to go to greener pastures.

mnky9800n··on Never ask a model to do something a deterministic system can do reliably
I always thought that a clever AI agent system would create deterministic systems that had been explored randomly through user request. Like, Lovable should have a giant treasure of data that can be used to essentially create building blocks that can be put together for a fraction of the cost of having the coding agent live generate everything all at once. It only needs some sort of knowledge structure like a graph to be able to traverse things and then a predictive structure to show where a building block might need some custom thing that an AI agent could do. Or from an ML perspective, why ask an LLM to calculate the sentiment of some text, have an LLM write a code that calculates the sentiment using VADER (or whatever). I could be wrong about all of this or speaking in too much abstraction.

I would be afraid that the size of the revenue versus the margin would make small fluctuations in revenue create large fluctuations in margin.
mnky9800n··on HackerRank open sourced its ATS. My resume scored 90/100. Oh wait 74. No – 88
There is evidence that children will oscillate between understanding and not understanding while learning topics. Philip Sadler at Harvard published about this but i can't find the paper im thinking of on his google scholar. too many papers!

but moreover, to verify a test item you need to make sure that peopel will select the same answers under teh same conditions at different times. people generally forget the specific questions they were asked if you ask them the same questions a month later so being able to get them to answer the same way each time is important. it is assumed the people have some static knowledge of a topic in this scenario.

If you want to consider a statistical examination of how people answer tests and how we assess knowledge and other things in people through surveying you can read about item response theory and rasch analysis.

mnky9800n··on 'AI washing': firms are scrambling to rebrand themselves as tech-focused
it is somewhat sad that a company already profitable would devote it's time and energy and profits to becoming more profitable instead of doing cool shit. doing cool shit always seems to be a better idea than anything else when one has profit.
mnky9800n··on 'AI washing': firms are scrambling to rebrand themselves as tech-focused
I think the worst part of all this is AI managed to make software cool again while also attacking software developers for no reason at all. Instead of claiming that AI will automate everything (like hello what do you think software does?). They could have said this will create millions of new jobs by giving access to tooling that lets you create whatever you want inside of a computer and offer it up to others. I guess people just like being negative about things.

LinkedIn is good. It’s not addictive. All your friends have one already. You can post whatever you want but nobody does because they think it’s work related. If you do post whatever you want you will begin to filter who is real and who is ai slop. You can’t spend more than like ten minutes a day looking at it because most of it is too boring to care. mnky9800n··on Scaffold a 1990s Geocities-themed static website
Feel free to take it I would love if more people do. I found the original a long time ago somewhere on GitHub. Actually one thing I wanted to do and never got around to it was making it like one click deploy to GitHub pages so anyone can fork the repo and run a setup and build their own version of the page. Although now Claude code basically solves that problem. Lol.

Feel free to send me a link to your page when you make it and we can add it to the list of MySpace graduates (currently me and you).

mnky9800n··on We let AIs run radio stations
As part of the ongoing expansion of https://rainy-city.com multimedia empire I too have launched an AI enabled radio station. It’s more trip hop rainy city vibes. If it’s streaming and the job hasn’t fallen over on my server (there are many tasks that I as mayor of rainy-city.com must oversee), then you can find it on YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/live/2Q7r9P16GRs?si=kwiSQMeN9wExdHer

This is a non revenue generating, rainy-city.com tax payer funded service to the greater community everywhere. The backend uses Nvidia NIM to generate the text because I saw you can do it for free and elevenlabs free voice tier for dj Jennifer.

mnky9800n··on Scaffold a 1990s Geocities-themed static website
This is the way.

I made my home page like MySpace:

https://johnspace.xyz

Because it used to be the internet was fun and centered on making stuff yourself and sharing with others. Just like geocities allowed. But now a lot of it all seems like the people making things want to sell things and this has been done at the expense of having spaces for non profit seeking creativity. This is also why I made https://rainy-city.com. Sorry for the self promotion but I really want people to create more stuff like this. Just fun things to find on the internet.

mnky9800n··on The Hiddn Financial Bubble in AI Infrastructure [pdf]
This is the same bubble everyone is talking about for a while now. GPUs don’t last long enough to justify the infrastructure cost. But what if they exist for longer than current estimated life cycles? That’s always my question as someone using A80s and A100s in 2026.

mnky9800n··on SWE-bench Verified no longer measures frontier coding capabilities
I feel like you are being pedantic. There are very few parts of Zork that are not static to the game. Yes the thief shows up randomly but that’s not the main point of the game.
mnky9800n··on SWE-bench Verified no longer measures frontier coding capabilities
we should talk. i sent you an email.
mnky9800n··on SWE-bench Verified no longer measures frontier coding capabilities
This is why I made Zork bench. Zork, the text adventure game, is in the training data for LLMs. It’s also deterministic. Therefore it should be easy for an LLM to play and complete. Yet they don’t. Understanding why is the goal of Zork bench.
