mnd999··on California wants to end Cupertino's tax deal with Apple
In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.

Unless you’re a corporation. Special tax treatment for anyone should be illegal. Pay your fucking taxes.

Edit: angrier

mnd999··on Email obfuscation rendered almost ineffective against ChatGPT
Another really useful societal benefit of AI.
mnd999··on Monsters of the Road: What Should the UK Do About SUVs?
I’m guessing you live somewhere with wider roads and more private vehicle-centric urban planning. That is not the UK.
mnd999··on Big landlords used software to collude on rent prices, DC lawsuit says
Sounds a bit too commie for the yanks.
mnd999··on Big landlords used software to collude on rent prices, DC lawsuit says
The private homebuilding sector is not going to build at the rate required to improve supply, because excess supply will cut into their margins. Deregulating will just allow them to build a ton of cheap low quality housing and still charge enormous amounts for it. Landlords would just pass that on.

The solution is quality social housing, built by the state in large enough quantities to disrupt the market.

mnd999··on Top Best OpenWrt Routers for VPN in 2023
I’m still using my Turris Omnia. It’s not strictly OpenWRT (it’s a derivative distribution packaged by Turris) but it’s been doing a great job for years.
mnd999··on The beauty of finished software
I get the downvotes, it's kinda snarky but I think it's a legit point. If he had more modern software, would he get more done?
mnd999··on The beauty of finished software
It’s a shame Mr Martin is less good at finishing his books.
mnd999··on Gmail, Yahoo announce new 2024 authentication requirements for bulk senders
Yep, just another step towards “we only accept email from Yahoo and Microsoft and they only accept mail from us”.
mnd999··on Xbox's new policy – say goodbye to unofficial accessories from November
Error 0x82d60002 seems intentionally user hostile as well.
mnd999··on Sweden (Not Switzerland)
Not to mention the tech: Klarna, Spotify, Neo4j, Ericsson
mnd999··on Sweden (Not Switzerland)
Swaziland changed it’s name to Eswatini partially to avoid the same problem.
mnd999··on Six Great Features with the Upcoming Linux 6.6 Kernel
I’m guessing they broke zfs again? Just because they can.
mnd999··on No federal privacy law? After the 23andMe hack, it's time to take action
Just be sure to change you DNA if you were impacted by the hack.
mnd999··on A BART seat-slashing gang that was part of an upholstery racket (2019)
So fix _that_ problem
mnd999··on Ask HN: Brother printers sending ink data to Amazon?
If you cared about privacy you won’t have an Alexa device in your house.
mnd999··on Linux ate my RAM (2009)
Really broken and stupid would be how I would describe it. Typically is just hangs hard with the disk at 100% and if you’re really patient you might be able to get a shell and kill some things over the course of the next 10 minutes.
mnd999··on Safe AI Image Generation
You decide everything is either good or bad with no shades of grey, declare yourself a free speech absolutist and tell everyone that however bad that is, censorship is worse.
mnd999··on Zen 5's Leaked Slides
Doesn’t EPYC already do this? You can put an EPYC in a desktop - I did.
mnd999··on 23andMe says user data stolen in credential stuffing attack
> Why are you letting people log into an account from a brand-new IP with no additional verification?

The opposite is the bigger WTF, why are the letting so many different people log in from the same IP at the same time. That’s a red flag on every fraud detection system I’ve seen. Not to mention there would be may failed logins for different accounts which is also a pretty strong warning.

mnd999··on Satya Nadella Says Copilot Will Be as Significant as the PC
That’s cos it is.
mnd999··on Satya Nadella Says Copilot Will Be as Significant as the PC
Shrug, the point is still relevant. Has he trained it on his own data, or just everyone else's?
mnd999··on Satya Nadella Says Copilot Will Be as Significant as the PC
Has he put his money where his mouth is and trained it on his own source code?
mnd999··on Could EU force hardware manufacturers to make working drivers for Linux?
A much more EU style directive would be to force all operating systems to use the Linux 5.1 kernel.
mnd999··on A couple of messages about changes to ianVisits
If I compress a Getty images photo to .jpg and put it on my website I’m still breaching copyright even though it’s gone through lossy compression and isn’t exactly the same. That’s essentially all a AI model is doing.

And copyright applies to every copy, not just when you download something to train the model. It also applies every time you make a copy with said model.

mnd999··on LG halts production of ATSC 3.0-compatible TVs over patent concerns
Doubt anyone is going to miss advanced advertising.
mnd999··on ChatGPT-4 significantly increased performance of business consultants
Makes sense. The bullshit generator can replace professional bullshitters.
mnd999··on A couple of messages about changes to ianVisits
All AI generated content is doing is ripping off peoples work, it’s just AI seems to come with a get out of jail free card.
mnd999··on UK Government Extends Petrol and Diesel Car Sales Until 2035
Try it sometime. It works for me and I’m not a single bachelor or in my 20s.

But I’m in Toronto next week, without a car so I guess I’ll see how I go there.

mnd999··on UK Government Extends Petrol and Diesel Car Sales Until 2035
Yeah in central that’s true. The currently ULEZ expansion controversy (at least the bits of it that aren’t shady Twitter / Facebook bot farms trying to engineer a Tory mayor) does indicate that a lot of folks in outer boroughs rely on their cars.
