mmwelt··on Signal is experiencing technical difficulties
I, too, thouht that, until I realised that the iOS clients are terrible in comparison with Android. :-(
mmwelt··on Congratulations, Mini, you made the stupidest turn signals ever
FYI, Firefox has limited support for addons on mobile devices, so you would be able to us Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin, AdGuard, etc.
mmwelt··on The Silicon Carbide Race Begins
From your linked article:

> If the charger provides 800V and a minimum of 300A, the Taycan can charge from five to 80 per cent in 22.5 minutes.

Wow! That's an insanely huge amount of current. Obviously the cables would have to be very thick to reduce transmission losses, but then you'd also have to have sufficient insulation/protection at 800V!

mmwelt··on uBlock Origin review
That works if you're browsing from a fixed location.

By contrast, browser extensions work wherever you are -- at work, in a bus/train, in a hotel, etc.

mmwelt··on A dubious writing style emerging in science
"designs preparing unit" = graphics processing unit (GPU)

"focal preparing unit" = central processing unit (CPU)

"individual computerized collaborator" = personal digital assistant (PDA)

It really is quite hilarious.

mmwelt··on Secure Messaging, Anywhere
Yup[1], it's a pity because it will greatly reduce the network effect needed to get enough people using the app.

mmwelt··on It's virtually impossible to read old iMessages and they take up tons of storage
The business solution would be... buy one! :-P
mmwelt··on Audacity 3.0
I've found Shotcut[1] to be pretty good. It's not quite professional, but not at all hard to learn as an amateur. It is also open source, and works on Windows, Linux and macOS.

mmwelt··on GNOME has no thumbnails in the file picker and my toilets are blocked
Thank you for that hint! I always thought it wasn't possible, so I didn't even try typing.
mmwelt··on WhatsApp gives users an ultimatum: Share data with Facebook or stop using app
International SMS is quite expensive and sometimes unreliable.

iMessage is only for Apple devices.

mmwelt··on Virtual Machine Detection in the Browser (2019)
While changing the reported device names can just make the VM a little less obvious, I suspect there will always be clues that indicate a VM. For example:

- Do network adapter MAC vendor ID's make sense?

- Does the hard drive size make sense?

- Which 3D acceleration features are supported/work correctly?

- How much graphics RAM is there?

- Timing-based methods

It's a bit like detecting private/incognito mode in a browser. Everything worked great, until websites realised there are ways to detect it, then became a game of cat and mouse.

mmwelt··on Firefox 84.0
Looks like grid view of open tabs[1] will also be available on Android. It's good to see the Android version improving together with the desktop version, since it's pretty much the only mainstream Android browser to support extensions.

mmwelt··on Why does Linux have so much trouble sleeping and waking?
I found it to be my USB mouse. I'd already disabled the option to wake the PC in the mouse device, but then found out that you also have to do that with a separate "keyboard" device[1]. But ever since disabling the option on both devices, things have become a lot better.

mmwelt··on Dark Reader – enable Dark Mode on Wikipedia and many other websites
I think you'll be very happy to find out that Dark Reader is now supported on Firefox on Android:

Right, it looks like it should be coming soon to Win10 2021H1:

mmwelt··on Lossless-cut: The swiss army knife of lossless video/audio editing
Looks interesting, but seems to be based on electron. I use avidemux[1] for lossless video/audio editing, works really well.

mmwelt··on Facebook Container for Firefox
> "The Facebook Container Extension is currently only available for Firefox for Desktop."

I hope this comes to Firefox for Android soon!

mmwelt··on Room-Temperature Superconductivity Achieved for the First Time
Sounds interesting, but the video doesn't seem to be available anymore. I'd be interested if anyone has a working link!
mmwelt··on Firefox's JIT is getting significantly faster
Is it even possible to access about:config on Android? In the new Daylight Firefox, I just get an error page.

There are a whole lot of other options I'd like to set...

mmwelt··on US bans WeChat, TikTok from app stores, threatens shutdowns
Yes, there is, but it requires you to scan a code with your mobile phone before you can use it!
mmwelt··on Croc: Easily and securely send things from one computer to another
Snapdrop[1] works quite well if you're on the same network. It's cross platform, you only need a reasonably recent web browser.

mmwelt··on OnlyOffice is an alternative to LibreOffice
The author talks about "top notch Microsoft Office compatibility", including formatting. However, something relatively simple, such as "Center Accross Selection" cell formatting in Excel does not display correctly in OnlyOffice. Hmm...
mmwelt··on Show HN: Unscreen – Automatically remove video backgrounds with ML
It killed my Android tablet running Firefox! First everything slowed down, then the status bar disappeared, then... black screen. Had to restart.
mmwelt··on Two vulnerabilities in Zoom could lead to code execution
Yes, this is a good option for some.

However, the ZOOM web client lacks quite a few features, including viewing the video of more than one participant at a time. I believe it's also not possible to share audio. So if you need to do any of these things, you really still have to install the ZOOM client on your computer!

mmwelt··on Sharedrop – Easy P2P file transfer powered by WebRTC
Looks pretty good, but it also seems to have stagnated. Latest commit was in January 2019. It would be nice to have a shorter URL for rooms, so it's easier to share with others.
mmwelt··on Satellite Babies
Sounds very related to the situation with "left-behind children" in China[1] (留守儿童), where parents leave their children with their extended family so they can work in larger cities. This has already caused massive social problems.

mmwelt··on Google Duo rolls out realtime AV1
The major problem in China is that Duo doesn't work at all, where as FaceTime works quite reliably.
