mmrezaie··on Exploiting modern microarchitectures: Meltdown, Spectre, and other attacks [pdf]
I understand this is not related, but how did the counters hide after couples seconds in the pdf? Can I do this using Latex? But what a great presentation of hardware architecture!
mmrezaie··on Want to see all data Windows 10 sends Microsoft?
I remember using bitvisor (a very thin hypervisor like Xen but for intercepting sys-calls or hyper-calls) to see if Windows XP and Windows 7 send anything without being caught by the OS level firewall. It was actually but I never investigate further. So with a grain of salt, I would never trust what Microsoft provides a way to increase the trust of people who are worried. Also in this documentation, it doesn't mention what is the data actually but it only says some keys and ids.

I would like to see how the OS I have paid for (not everyone is just upgrading) can be stopped of monitorings. Granted I am coming from Linux and Mac but it took me a lot of time to find the checkboxes and there is still no way to know if I have unchecked them all and if they are adding more of these in the future updates. Which may be this tool can be helpful for me knowing oops I missed one of those apparently.

mmrezaie··on Linux Driver Management 1.0 Released
It is weird I didn't see the Gentoo Portage and BSD Ports as the first mentions. They are basically forerunners not sure if they are actually the first.
mmrezaie··on HiSilicon Kirin 970 Review
I find the comparison between ARM's GPU and others very interesting. I wonder what exactly Apple and Qualcomm are doing that they are way more efficient based on power usage?
mmrezaie··on Linus Torvalds: “Somebody is pushing complete garbage for unclear reasons.”
Well many years ago his rational (which I agree) was that you should not be vague on the mailing list or people will be confused and Linux Kernel is serious. For all those who do not like this attitude, I point you to the responses coming from Intel/AMD these days. In AMD's response to specture v2, I still cannot understand the text if they say their CPUs are exposed or not. If it wasn't because of the comments in here I would have guessed that they may not.

One of many source codes online and they are actually pretty understandable by me. I am just a mediocre c programmer.

mmrezaie··on Why Did ProtonMail Vanish from Google Search Results? (2016)
Well said, making us pay them for the quality/uncensored search results basically destroys the main source of how they can create insights on data by letting people use their services for free. Google's search business is now a public utility but so far I do not see regulatory systems capable of regulating it without destroying it (catch 22 so far).
mmrezaie··on Using a logbook to improve your programming
or maybe http://orgmode.org/ if you are using emacs. I do not know how awesome orgmode was, and I was missing it. plus you can export it even to latex if you wanna track your research and write your thesis.
mmrezaie··on Qubes OS: A reasonably secure operating system
way smaller compared to KVM/Linux's but compared to seL4's 10k LOC it is huge which is why seL4 is a good candidate as industry standard size for trustable hypervisor layer [1] but I am not sure how and what happened to L4Linux project other than being just an academic project!

mmrezaie··on Qubes OS: A reasonably secure operating system
Xen's hypervisor's size is very small. Qubes is about security and trustability of the whole system. In operating systems for measuring the trustability of the system, one very important measure is the lines of the code. Xen has a smaller footprint in the hypervisor part. Additionally, Xen has a robust model isolation for the drivers. That's why they went for Xen not KVM. But boy I wish to see more seL4. It was sad to see Gnu Hurd/seL4 didn't make it.
mmrezaie··on The Shock of Sweden's Housing Market Is Hitting the Country's Currency
As someone just bought an apartment in Stockholm two years ago I was shocked seeing that I made 50 or more percent on how much I paid for my apartment but when I checked the data there I saw not all the areas in Stockholm raised in the same time and rate. I think there were many areas got hyped and there are many old buildings which raised and if you check the data you will see the start of falling in prices is not happening everywhere. I would guess prices will continue falling for two or more years but to the point, before the scare and excitement started which raised the prices too high in a year, and then it will stabilize. There is a talk also to loosen the restriction on companies which renting apartments. I really do not think this is like US's 2008 era inflation.
mmrezaie··on Rivals Intel and AMD Team Up on PC Chips to Battle Nvidia
I would have liked to see that too but I assume one of the reasons can be porting the BIOS/UEFI and Chipset Drivers, and keep the quality the same as the one that they have already. AMD has done good on the hardware but they are not famous for being stable on the driver and software side.
mmrezaie··on Rivals Intel and AMD Team Up on PC Chips to Battle Nvidia
Probably next Apple release cycle is the main motivation, but who knows?
mmrezaie··on Linux containers in 500 lines of code (2016)
I ask the same question from my wife! Some people only read on paper. We have two of each book because I read on Kindle and she reads it on the actual physical book.
mmrezaie··on Apache Kafka Goes 1.0
I am not sure if you had seen comparisons like this [1] or not but it has some important points when comparing these two. But I would say it also depends on how you are gonna use the streams. For example, if like us, you are going to digest the streams using Spark I would say Spark's API is more mature with Kafka (unless you have switched to Spark 2.2 and higher).

mmrezaie··on Permissionless innovation
I don't think he was against relation but he mentions in the interview what kind of regulations actually stops even starting businesses like building a hospital only if other hospitals sign that city needs another one. He had other examples too.
mmrezaie··on Permissionless innovation
The author has a great interview on econtalk about this which I found very interesting.
mmrezaie··on Soylent can no longer ship to Canada
So they relabel it and it would be fine?
mmrezaie··on Tabs, spaces and your salary – how is it really?
Art or whatever it is subjective to decide which code formatting is better. As long as a single "code format actor" can transform different styles automatically then why one should care. I think most communities are having an agreement on which one they would like to choose and most of the times they chose the best style but doesn't mean one has to limit themselves into those formats anyway. Something like git push --code-style somestyle would be a relaxing.
mmrezaie··on Chelsea Manning released from prison
the myopic eyesight of the masses.
mmrezaie··on CoreFreq – CPU monitoring for 64-bit processors
Linux has MSR module or one can use perf.
mmrezaie··on CoreFreq – CPU monitoring for 64-bit processors
Well using perf or reading MSR doesn't need you writing your kernel module. I think the overhead of using perf or direct access to MSR are kinda similar.
mmrezaie··on System76 is moving product design and manufacturing in house
Well, it works fine when I use HDMI for the external display. I have not tested the DisplayPort.
mmrezaie··on Tiny Linux distro that runs the entire OS as Docker containers
Probably it was not the vision of these types of projects, but this reminds me a lot of Qubes OS[1]. I actually have occasionally used docker (lxc) to run some applications that I was not trusting, and I was controlling them using cgroups. Right now my chrome browser is running like that.

mmrezaie··on 1.1B taxi rides benchmarked on distributed GPU-powered MapD
Is there a bridge for using MapD with Spark interface or somehow combining them? This can be interesting for the clusters with a lot of GPUs and a lot of data to do data manipulations.
mmrezaie··on System76 is moving product design and manufacturing in house
XPS 13 is amazing and with Linux support it is fine, but that keyboard though. You need to test it to see if it fits for you.
mmrezaie··on System76 is moving product design and manufacturing in house
I had bumblebee on my precision 5520, and it works fine. You need to meddle with it a little bit, but after that everything works fine. Actually, I loved it since I could have my X11 memory space controlled by Intel and my Cuda application development wouldn't have messed up the X11 while running. Something you expect to not happen, but happens all the time.

Bumblebee and optirun can be better, but it is usable right now.

mmrezaie··on YC will hold interviews in Vancouver for founders who can’t get US visas
Well the recent passed executive rules are about "legal immigrants" not the un-documented immigrants. That yet to come, "officially".
mmrezaie··on WikiLeaks Releases Trove of Alleged C.I.A. Hacking Documents
Well, it would be really dangerous if they have put a headline that did not make normal people not read it. I do not see this as click bait, and I see this as a usual signal for the mainstream to be aware.

Also, if you these people read only the title, then the problem is not any sort of text, you should fix those people first. No matter what words were chosen they will most likely make the wrong judgment.

mmrezaie··on Seven earth-sized planets discovered circling a star 39 light years from Earth
I was very stressed and watching this calm me down. Thanks
