mlmonkey··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
> What empty, bare land?

Have you been to Death Valley, my friend? All of Southeastern California is empty, barren land. Death Valley, Mojave Desert, etc.

mlmonkey··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
They should give credit where credit is due. Solar panels on top of irrigation canals was pioneered in the Indian state of Gujarat back in 2012[1]

mlmonkey··on Fable 5 – Median thinking declined in August
Anecdotally, I have found the same. I spend a lot of time with these frontier models, brainstorming, etc. and the drop in performance from, say, week 1 to week 8 is often massive. Whereas in the beginning, it seemed like a capable research assistant, by the end of week 8 or so it starts acting like a puppy dog eager to make its 'master' happy for a few treats.
mlmonkey··on Asking authors about their own papers
I hear you. I just happened to submit a paper to Neurips this year, and the "reviewer" sent back so many questions, etc. that the character limit of the response could never accomodate my response. So I just addressed a few of the main points and called it a day.

I am sure an LLM review could be made much shorter with some prompting.

mlmonkey··on Asking authors about their own papers
Boy do I have news for you! :-D

"low quality, superficial reviews" have always been around. Reviewing is most often an unpaid, thankless job and many times reviewers barely put in the effort.

mlmonkey··on Asking authors about their own papers
IMHO (not a paper writer, but read a lot during my grad school years), the Genie is out of the bottle. The only way forward, as I see it, is using LLMs for reviews also. Basically, filter all submitted papers with an LLM and ask it to summarize it, find the biggest weaknesses and main strong points, etc. that a human can then use to review the paper. Basically, LLM-as-a-reviewer .

Personally, I would love to see a conference where people are explicitly encouraged to use LLMs for doing the work and writing the papers, and LLMs are used to review them too.

mlmonkey··on The first new cat species discovered in 100 years
> Let's see if it (or crossbreeds) can be tamed.

Clearly you are not a cat person ... the question is not if it can be tamed, but how quickly it can tame the humans around it ... ;-)

mlmonkey··on Dream-RSI: Recursive Self-Improvement through Evolving Worlds
All along I had thought that "AGI", "RSI", etc. were at the model level: but this paper seems to be talking about "agents", etc. I'm not sure having a swarm of agents explore a problem space in parallel via brute force is what "AGI" is about. I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

> Ask yourself, how does Google -- a company that famously does everything -- benefit from SWEs outside of Google having access to powerful coding models?

Catch is, even Googlers internally do not have access to top-tier models. (or did not until recently, when apparently Claude was made accessible to the SWEs internally).

mlmonkey··on The Last AI Built by Humans: Toward Genuine Recursive Self-Improvement
The goal is to kill us all .... j/k. :-)
mlmonkey··on Sergey Brin pours more than $100M into fighting California's billionaire tax
But what is the point of a 1-time tax? It doesn't solve anything! It's just a slush fund for the SEIU!
mlmonkey··on Sergey Brin pours more than $100M into fighting California's billionaire tax
I don't understand the point of a "one time" tax. What happens once the money runs out a year later? Another "one time" tax?? Why not implement a permanent tax if you want to permanently solve the problem??
mlmonkey··on Anthropic boss Dario Amodei calls for AI development to slow down

mlmonkey··on Technique for Manipulating Satellite Photos Now Reveals Ancient Images (2025)
Is there an imagemagick implementation that I can just throw into the pipeline?
mlmonkey··on I resigned from Anthropic today
Agreed. And his doom words have set a 1000 mouths in the Pentagon/Whitehall/August 1st Building/Kremlin salivating with excitement.

Take China, for example. Look at any recent ML conference, and see the fraction of articles majority-authored from Chinese universities and labs. Do you think they'll slow things down anytime soon? I don't think so!

It's a global arms race, and we're just spectators.

mlmonkey··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
Hand over every piece of personal information to Zuck .... um... no thanks, dawg, I'll pass.
mlmonkey··on Ask HN: How do you manage skills files?
I think skills also count towards the token counts. In the end, everything becomes a 1-D array of input text.
mlmonkey··on 'You Can See Everything' Review: Nathan Fielder's Doc About Elizabeth Holmes
Sergey Brin (of Google fame) was known for "dating" young interns/employees at Google in the early days. Once, when HR reminded him that he could get into trouble (since it was against policy), his response was, basically (paraphrasing) along the lines of "Why am I hiring them then?"

Basically, he considered it is his right to have his way with his young interns and employees.

mlmonkey··on South African diamond mines are closing due to weak sales and lab-grown stones
I heard once that even if DeBeers stopped all diamond mining activity, their existing stockpile would last for a 100 years or more.
mlmonkey··on Private German rocket makes history, reaches orbit from European soil
Ariane is from the ESA, which is an organization under EU. The claim was that "EU is finally decoupling itself from the USA". My point is: the EU already has Ariane, for instance. It decoupled a long time ago.
mlmonkey··on Private German rocket makes history, reaches orbit from European soil
Are we forgetting about Ariane?

I met a senior (as in, 4th year of college) recently and she asked me: what advice do you have for someone just graduating in the AI age? (as I had told her that I've been in ML for 20+ years, etc.)

My recommendation to her was: just _play_ with the AI! It's a brand new tool, and none of us knows its capabilities, limitations, boundaries etc. (which are fluid, of course). So just spend as much time as you can tinkering with it, playing with it, making it do things it was not expected to do, etc. and you'll develop an idea of how to make better use of it.

mlmonkey··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
I don't mean to sound like a conspiracy theorist, and this is just based on my 33 years of observing the USG at work, so: maybe because Anthropic refused to cooperate with the USG and give them access to whatever it is that they (USG) wanted; or maybe because Anthropic was refusing to play ball in some other aspect and needed to be taught a lesson.

The dark parts of the USG act like a mafia. Don't let the "freedom, democracy, 'bill of rights'" etc. charade fool you.

As someone who spent countless nights tweaking Edge Detectors (looking at you, Canny), morphology operators, etc., building models to recognize 10 handwritten digits, let me tell you: the current set of LLMs (even the smaller ones) seem like magic. I had never imagined a computer would do such things in my lifetime.
mlmonkey··on GPT-6 Astra
I often feel like the use cases, demos, etc. that these Silicon Valley employees put out are based around their needs and how they operate.

"Oh hey! Here's a demo of an AI planning out a 1-week trip to Paris!" No one in Middle America would just hand their credit card to an AI and let it come up with such a trip!

I wish SV companies took more of the middle-class (and lower-middle-class) into consideration when coming up with such demos.

(Note: I live in SF)

Burning Man is ...... what you make of it.

The last time I went, there was this dude in a camp next to where I was camped. The entire week I was there, I only saw him sitting and drinking; he was totally hammered the entire 7 days and didn't go anwhere (AFAICT). That really saddened me: he could have done the same back home wherever he had come from; what's the point of coming to BM if you're going to just sit in one place and get drunk?

I really wanted to take it all in, so I stayed away from drinking or smoking, and had a great time! There is so much to see, so many creative people to interact with. You can end up having a deep conversation on just about any topic under the sky with random people. I ended up chatting with this Physics graduate student about, of all things, quarks (an area of specialty for him). He ended up patiently explaining various things to me, as if we were long-lost friends.

My recommendation: jump in with both feet in the spirit of contribution and cooperation. Have fun, respect boundaries, contribute however you can.

The food comes out early in the morning (8AM). This guy I often find watching me around noon. So the food has long been consumed and forgotten.
