mlmlmasd··on Windows 10 0day exploit goes wild, and so do Microsoft marketers
Yes, but the point is you wouldn't be aware unless he released the info. He gave individual users an option to protect themselves in the absence of a patch from MS.
mlmlmasd··on Windows 10 0day exploit goes wild, and so do Microsoft marketers
> Now that everybody knows that

Wait, when did everyone become aware of that? I'm willing to bet the vast majority of windows users have no idea. _Some_ people only know _because_ he released the bug.

mlmlmasd··on Windows 10 0day exploit goes wild, and so do Microsoft marketers
No, it was only a 0day before he made it public. He is merely providing security-conscious persons information and a way to defend themselves from an exploit which MS has not fixed. He is turning a 0day into a known vuln.
mlmlmasd··on Windows 10 0day exploit goes wild, and so do Microsoft marketers
MS is acting 'totally unethically' by not patching this bug immediately and rewarding the researcher.
mlmlmasd··on Windows 10 0day exploit goes wild, and so do Microsoft marketers
> so he's causing microsoft and USERS problems they didn't have before.

He's not causing problems, he's solving them.

No.
mlmlmasd··on To Live Your Best Life, Do Mathematics
> To understand this you need to look at the career track of newly minted math PhDs and what one needs to do to secure tenure.

You can pursue new mathematics without having a PhD. I think the most difficult/frustrating part about academic/institutional mathematics is the politics and bureaucratic bullshit.

mlmlmasd··on To Live Your Best Life, Do Mathematics
> I believe that mathematics can be learned and appreciated by many, because mathematics is a language for articulating inner urges and perceptions that are common to a wide range of creatures, not only humans

I'm not sure where you're getting the 'wide range of creatures, not humans' part, or even why that matters, but I agree, mathematics is a formalization/projection of our own thinking process, which pretty much every human has.

I would pay to see Google, Oracle, Microsoft, etc be judged by FSF.
mlmlmasd··on Reuters' position on covering Trump
> but the appearance/practice of being impartial increased sales opportunities.

Is this based on any real data? Have there been any credible studies that show unbiased reporting = higher sales?

mlmlmasd··on Ask HN: How to answer properly “Why we should hire you” question?
The fact that they tell you how many other candidates there are for the same position is a bad sign about their hiring process to be honest.
mlmlmasd··on Ask HN: How to answer properly “Why we should hire you” question?
That's why you have interviews... use them wisely instead of asking silly questions.
mlmlmasd··on Ask HN: How to answer properly “Why we should hire you” question?
By being good at what you do, not by giving cute answers to retarded questions.
mlmlmasd··on How Camus and Sartre split up over the question of how to be free
What difference in tone and focus are you referring to? Noam Chomsky seems like a much more 'European-style' (academic?) intellectual then the pop/celeb 'intellectuals' popular in America such as Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, etc.
mlmlmasd··on “The Origins of Totalitarianism“ is out of stock on Amazon
Not really, there is nothing about being labeled a 'mystic' that means the person is less politically informed. The Catholic Popes are arguably in the same bucket but were and are some of the most politically informed and influential people on the planet. Simone Weil was very politically active and quite well informed.
mlmlmasd··on “The Origins of Totalitarianism“ is out of stock on Amazon
> That said, if you're looking for concrete political understanding, probably don't read the work of a French mystic who starved herself to death.

That's like saying 'probably don't concern yourself with Godel's mathematics because he was mentally ill and starved himself to death'. Such a stupid reason to look down on someone's work for.

mlmlmasd··on “The Origins of Totalitarianism“ is out of stock on Amazon
> I remember a lot of people buying The Road to Serfdom eight years ago.

Not sure how that's relevant.

There's a difference between using tax payer money to pay people in that country, vs paying outsourced labor somewhere in another country.

From my experience, most large companies have support policies that basically blacklist all forms of help that may incur cost for the company. What I found works quite often though, is drafting a formal letter (can be email) referencing your country's consumer protection act and sending it directly to the corporate office :). I've used this method with ISPs, Godaddy, a few other companies.
mlmlmasd··on Uber Hires Former Google Search Chief Amit Singhal as SVP of Engineering
What Uber has, that all of the other players don't is a platform, data, and experience operating such a service. All they have to do is add in the self driving cars, whereas all (most) of the other players have to build the whole platform.
mlmlmasd··on Uber Hires Former Google Search Chief Amit Singhal as SVP of Engineering
There is no evidence of Uber being better or worse than the others, but they are ahead in terms of using self driving cars as taxis.

mlmlmasd··on Uber Hires Former Google Search Chief Amit Singhal as SVP of Engineering
> As long as ridesharing companies need human drivers network effects ensure that Uber will remain at the top.

I think it is the opposite... Uber's only real way to turn a profit while staying competitive is to get rid of the cost of drivers.

> What's stopping an upstart company to buy/lease 10,000 self-driving cars and let them loose on the street?

The fact that Uber is already working on this, has a platform, has tons of data?

mlmlmasd··on Selecting a platform: JavaScript vs Elm vs PureScript vs GHCjs
Both are pretty trivial to integrate, because you can essentially white-list the rules you want applied, but the documentation on how to properly do this is lacking for typescript in my opinion. There is also a lot of contradictory information on best approaches when using Typescript.
