mlaretallack··on A Gov.uk site dedicated to porn?
I am now taking bets on how long it will last.

'This site is hosted on a Raspberry Pi 4B in the author's living room (behind the couch)'

mlaretallack··on Batteries included with Emacs (2020)
I really respect people who can use emacs (and vim, vi etc...) they wiz around doing allsorts and make it look effortless.

The only reason I have not tried is I seem to spend most of my time thinking about the change, and the time saved is easily wiped out by the time taked to re-write the line 5 times.

mlaretallack··on TaskJuggler – A Free and Open Source Project Management Software
I have used TaskJuggler alot in the past, however that was more in a waterfall developement where we needed to plan the whole project over 6 months to 3 years, For agile I have not really used it, a SCRUM/Other board tends to fit better. But I still really like TaskJuggler
mlaretallack··on Mosquitto: An open-source MQTT broker
That is where MQTT-SN comes in. I have used it over NB-IOT and then a gateway to full MQTT over mTLS to AWS IoT.
mlaretallack··on List of Emerging Technologies
good point, all the above are 'communications'. the question is, what is the next stage of communications.
mlaretallack··on Linux Memory Management FAQ
The times I have had to explain how mm works is draining. yes you can malloc 2M, no that does not mean you have 2M to use.
mlaretallack··on Pidgin – A Universal Chat Client
yep. I used it when I had to talk to all my friends on msn messanger etc.. one app to talk to everyone no matter what they where using. Now I have to have 10 different apps to talk to just 10 friends.
mlaretallack··on Signal is having technical difficulties
We need a Open Inferstructure Foundation...
mlaretallack··on Traffic Simulator
For 2, Eclipse Sumo allows import of a road network from openstreetmap.
mlaretallack··on Learn how to design and defend an embedded Linux device
ive not done hard real time for a number of years (usually I have foubd its not needed), but Xenomai would be one option for real hard realtime. The other option is to use the rtlinux patches, however that is not true hard real time, but for most use-cases works ok.
mlaretallack··on Open-Source Virtual Background
Very interesting,

The magic is pyfakewebcam and v4l2loopback, I was looking foe a way to turn myself into a potato on Teams. The bit I was missing was how to create a virtual webcam.

mlaretallack··on JP Morgan economists warn of 'catastrophic' climate change
"It's not about being right."

This is the best advice to all sides.

I have found in the past that the best way to convince people is not to try to "convince" them that my "view" is correct but to listen to their views.

I call this being a "Cardboard engineer". It does not work for everyone.

mlaretallack··on Google plans to move UK users' accounts outside EU jurisdiction
February 1st was officially the "first day" out.
mlaretallack··on Guide to Software Defined Radio
Start with the spectrum analyser app, it is a nice way to see what transmissions are around. This leads to "what is that".....
mlaretallack··on Open-Source Home Automation
And thank you for a great system, from a user.
mlaretallack··on Open-Source Home Automation
I do not have home automation

However I use Home assistant.

Why, because it shows me what is going on....

Its a dashboard for my house.

mlaretallack··on Open-Source Home Automation
I think this is exactly the point of the developers,

First seal to see Then seal to control

Home assistant is the "see" bit. Then you use it (or something else) to control the process

mlaretallack··on Open-Source Home Automation
Originally it was curiosity, however of has moved on from that.

I work in the traffic industry.

If we can slow people down before they reach the queue, then we can reduce the impact of them joining the queue (co2 etc....).

mlaretallack··on Open-Source Home Automation
And my last 4 years :)
mlaretallack··on Open-Source Home Automation
I have my old flat in 2000(ish) fully linked. This. Included PIR sensors, door sensors, and lamps, lights. I also had. The heating fitted with an x10 switch. This meant that I could turn the heating on and my kettle on remotely on the way home from work.

X10 was nice that it could communicate through main, but when I started to use Ethernet over power, it stopped working. It also was one-way. There was no confirm or status from the switch devices.

mlaretallack··on Open-Source Home Automation
The data comes from the open rail data project

https://wiki.openraildata.com//index.php?title=Main_Page

Some crossings in the uk are directly available as a state within the data, mine is not so I have to track the trains into and out of a region. When the train enters the region, I assume the crossing must be down and when it leaves, I assume it must be up.

Its about 30 seconds to a minute off, but for my purpose that's OK.

mlaretallack··on Open-Source Home Automation
I have been using home assistant for about 6 months now.

Currently I am mainly using it to show what is happening around the home (device detection, adsl data usage, weather from my simple weather station, house power usage etc, local train level crossing state (barrier down/up))

Very impressed with how easy it is to add new items to the overview.

I have one smart plug, the intention is to control the Christmas lights this year. I did do this about 15 years ago with my old x10 system and it would be nice to try something a bit more advanced.

mlaretallack··on Jimmy Wales has quietly launched a Facebook rival
The problem I always have is "all my friends". I joined MSN messenger in the 2003(ish) only because that was the only away to join my friends. Facebook came next, and what's app moved them over to that. When it comes to " social media", the clue is in the name.

What is the solution?

A system that using a unique ID I can contact anyone else in the world, the two methods are voice or message. :)

mlaretallack··on IKEA Will Be Entirely Meat-Free This Christmas
IKEA breakfast are the only reason I visit. That's one place I new to visit. Amazon it is then...
mlaretallack··on Everything I googled in a week as a professional software engineer
Yep.
mlaretallack··on Everything I googled in a week as a professional software engineer
Same here.

Its one of those things that after almost 20 years, I should remember. But it just does not go in.

It becomes interesting when junior programmers are watching how I do something and I end up googl'ing things that they know.

I use the excuse that it fees up more space for other more interesting stuff, a bit like some execs just ware T-shirt and jeans to reduce the number of things to distract them in the morning so that can concentrate on the important things.

mlaretallack··on Major power failure affects homes and transport
Its not often we have power outages. And when we do they usually have "understandable" reasons ( lightning etc..) And are localised.

This seems different.

mlaretallack··on Senate passes bill to decrease grid digitization, move toward manual control
Most industrial application also done know or care what ssl/TLS is (however this is starting to change). I have had industrial control systems reboot by just doing an nmap scan.
mlaretallack··on Open source firmware is important for security
I would start with qemu and uefi coreboot. Docker is too high level for this.
mlaretallack··on GPS Flaw: Security Expert Says He Won't Fly April 6
GPS provides the time (hour, minute, seconds) and date (day, month, year) over the NMEA messages. It also provides a week counter. This wraps around at 1024. The last time was about year 1999.

With most of the things I have used NMEA for (time sync), I did not use the weeks counter. However if there is any software that does use it, it needs to be able to handle the rollover.
