mlang23··on After a decade as Apple’s assistant, Siri still hasn’t figured out the job
My favourite Siri bug: If it fails to understand the name of the person I want to call, it suggests to call myself! "OK, so you want to call <your name>?" This bug exists since about 10 years, and apparently has never been fixed.
mlang23··on Apple execs describe a “unique arrangement” with Netflix (2018)
I think you are underestimating the value of being present on the platform that is Apple. I basically only created my Netflix subscription (which I cancelled by now) because it was super easy to sign up on my Apple TV. I probably wouldn't have bothered to do so on a PC.

I stopped taking the nobel prize seriously when they awarded the peace nobel prize to Obama.
mlang23··on Facebook whistleblower says she wants to fix company, not harm it
Well, same applies to YouTube. Most of the ads I get in the past 6 months are absolutely borderline scam.
mlang23··on Removing my site from Google search
Interesting. Judging from your comment, I guess you are living in a country with a two party system and the death penalty? Well, I dont.
mlang23··on Removing my site from Google search
You seem to imply that not voting for the left automatically means voting for the right. May I remind you that there is another option you probably forgot about? Did you ever hear about the concept of abstaining from voting?
mlang23··on Removing my site from Google search
And comparing everything you dont like with anti-vax is not manipulative? C'mon, be more creative.
mlang23··on Removing my site from Google search
DId you just compare boycotting Google with not getting vaxed? I used to vote left. But reading people like you arguing like this reminds me to never ever do so again.
mlang23··on Ruby removed “Participants will be tolerant of opposing views” from its CoC
To answer your question, I believe no.

My experience as a person with a disability is that whenever things were written down in rigid rules, humanity was lacking during execution of said rules. Whenever I was able to make things up on the spot with the people around me, I felt safe and OK.

Besides, I am wondering, does your choiceof screenname here imply something? Mockery perhaps? Or do you show up in this discussion with such a screenname totally by accident?

mlang23··on Ruby removed “Participants will be tolerant of opposing views” from its CoC
Its like fighting a windmill. The CoC was just established. And attendees were encouraged to bring their children. I guess the organizers didnt realize what can of worms they just opened, or they were not willing to reflect. I agree with your point of view, but I cant say that it would fit the reality I see and saw. In fact, what happened was exactly the reason why I am against CoCs: I was effectively silenced because I was afraid of the backlash I would get if I opened spoke out about children in the conference room. This is psychological terrorism, and I am not having it.
mlang23··on Ruby removed “Participants will be tolerant of opposing views” from its CoC
It looks like you cant execute one of the common CoC rules. Assume good intentions. I dont need to look at a CoC of a conference, because, you know, I am living these ideas: I actually assume good intentions, so I dont need a CoC to assure myself.
mlang23··on Ruby removed “Participants will be tolerant of opposing views” from its CoC
And all the virtue signalling apparently leads to people like me, who are adults and can very well stand for themselves, not attending such conferences anymore. I truely think that people who are not willing or able to defend themselves in a social setting have bigger problems then FLOSS conferences. They have skipped a part of growing up. I feel sorry for them. But I dont agree that we should plaster everything with pseudo-laws to give them a false sense of security.

So it is apparently ok if the mentally weak feel welcome, and those which have learnt to defend themselves no longer showing up because they dont feel at home? Great, reminds me of one of the last interactions I had in a conference setting. Small children in the conference room. As a blind individual, I really rely on hearing what the speaker says. I cant just look at the slides. I already knew it wouldnt go well, but I tried to discuss the issue. At first, I heard some sympathy for my point of view. And 2 hours later, the same person didnt want to stand up for the issue anymore. So I guess womens right to bring their 1 year olds everywhere they want was trumping the needs of a disabled person attending the same conference. Thanks, I am done with this hypocrity.

mlang23··on Ruby removed “Participants will be tolerant of opposing views” from its CoC
I realize CoCs were introduced to make certain supposedly marginalized groups more at home at conferences. But my personal experience/feeling is the complete reverse. I am a member of a minority as a person with a disability. In all the years I was interacting with the community, I haven't had a single issue with someone I couldn't handle myself. I never felt uneasy interacting with others. But the day I saw the first CoC being used in a community I was interacting with, I started to feel uneasy. I cant really say why, but I feel I dont want to interact with groups which need rules like these. I also stopped going to conferences. Gosh, I am even glad I didnt go to the DebConf where they invited Linus only to realize later that they are very unhappy with his speaking style. I would have felt too much shame for being a part of such a group of hyprocrits.
mlang23··on Almost All of Facebook’s Top Christian Pages in 2019 Run by Foreign Troll Farms
I beg to differ. I have met people who have been mentally damaged by religion to a point where they are no longer a useful member of society, to the contrary. While media is also doing a lot of damage to people, especially in the last 2 years, I am convinced nothing can top the horror that is religion. Besides, people that have to believe in a supernatural overload to function in this world are just spooky to me.
mlang23··on I'm working on open source full time
If I were to give $1 monthly to everyone who substantially contributed to the software I am using on a daily basis, I believe my salary wouldn't suffice and I'd have to go live on the street. I know about Patreon, yes. But I also know that only the most prominent figures will actually earn enough to make it worthwhile. And in a sense, they are making money off the fact that the other 99% does not try to get payed for what they volunteered for.
mlang23··on I'm working on open source full time
OK, lets put it another way. If everyone who deserves support for their work is going to be posted on HN, its going to take a long time until the last one gets their money.
mlang23··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
STFU is not going to work to build trust in government and medical institutions. Frankly, believing it will is one of the reasons why things go downhill these days. "My way or the highway" has never really done anything good to make people understand eachother. I hear that you are frustrated, but your attitude is not going to help anyone except yourself.
mlang23··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
No, they are not crucial social policy. You will have to accept that democracy does not mean that everyone has to be of the same opinion as you.
mlang23··on I'm working on open source full time
The title made it already clear that this is an instance of "I am fighting the good fight, so please give me your money." I am an open source/FLOSS enthusiast since 25 years, but such calls still sound pathetic to me. These days even more then 10 years ago. Its a bit like going "I volunteer as an ambulance driver, do you have a few dollars?" I can see that some people dream of becoming financially independent from just coding open source. I have dreams as well. But the truth is, only a very select few ever reach that point. Joey Hess with git-annex comes to mind. I guess he just hit a nail at the right time, and wrote something that many people actually use. But if you're just that tad below the "everyone knows your tool"-line, you will never ever make your living from donations.
mlang23··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
Right, people like you need to be stopped. Lets stop talking to people like you, and support them in our community. Lets stop helping people like you if they need something. Lets just drop people like you out of society.
mlang23··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
At this point in time, nobody not vaccinated yet is interested in your propaganda. Also, the post you are replying to is already sort of doxing his own wife, so please dont make it even worse by capitalising on that.

Another reason to NOT by YouTube Premium, and leave my spare phone on autoplay when going out, so that youtube ad customers get to pay for supporting the biggest scam operation ever. 80% of the ads I get would never pass a sanity-check in my home country, such ads are simply illegal on our TV. But hey, the american is spreading scam ads, so lets just accept that.

As some others have already hinted, this sounds a lot like Emacs with Org-mode. Also, who writes such testimonial snippets? The style of writing doesnt make me particularily trust they are real :-)
mlang23··on Sometimes mindlessness is better than mindfulness
I fully agree. Although there are exceptions, much of the self-help industry has a similar spooky feel to me. Also, I find it hilarious that people are using apps to meditate or be "mindful". I cant quite explain it with words, but... If the first step of your journey is already in the wrong direction, forget about the rest...
mlang23··on The Mom Test – How to talk to customers
I get your attitude, but I can't confirm. For one, I am not sure if you actually realize how much work it is to learn to navigate your environment blind in a city. Even if there is no PA, asking is a million times simpler then moving to another city, because, you know, if you move, you have to start all over again and will need at least a year until you can somewhat move freely in that new city again. Also, where I come from we are pretty used to snow. Its not quite far up north, but our snow plowing infrastructure works, and flooding isn't a common event either. So yeah, in general, I am on your side, I'd love to have a PA. But the truth is, in the two most largest cities in my country, there is none, so I have to resort to either knowing which line arrives where, or simply ask someone. I've gotten used to that. Also, I have a certain feeling that involving random strangers in accessibility issues is actually doing something for the society. It forces people to deal with the issues disabled people have.
mlang23··on The Mom Test – How to talk to customers
Although not quite the same, this reminds me of a very simple trick many blind people are taught during training on how to navigate the city: Never ever ask "Is this line 4" if you want to know which tram just arrived. Ask "which line is this?" Simply because the first version will make many people answer "yeah yeah" without even looking. The second version forces them to actually answer your question with something other then yes/no.
mlang23··on Apple’s app review prevents developer from submitting fix to game for the blind
Well, if you lack accessibility experience, and insist that a week of hackery on a custom framework should be enough, that is not VoiceOvers fault. Accessibility is a serious thing, not something you can do as a side project while waiting till the baby wakes up.
mlang23··on Apple’s app review prevents developer from submitting fix to game for the blind
Yes, my bad.
mlang23··on Apple’s app review prevents developer from submitting fix to game for the blind
Wait, did you just imply that apps by certain big companies dont need a review because you think these special biig companies deserve a bit of extra trust? Fascinating, how did you arrive at this conclusion?
mlang23··on Apple’s app review prevents developer from submitting fix to game for the blind
Apple killed one of the best voiceover enabled single-player poker simulator about 2 years ago. THETAPoker was absolutely great, and the author invested a lot of time and energy to make the game perfectly self-voicing. Until Apple review falsely identified it as a gambling-app which needs to be banned. The author tried to get someone to listen at apple, and was totally ignored. Now, Apple has a similar poker simulator, called hold'em, which is by far not as good regarding VoiceOver support. It feels like a scam to kick someone from the AppStore who did a very good job just to make your own botched copy-cat app more prominent.

That said, Apple VoiceOver is still one of the best shipped-by-default accessibility systems. However, we have to thank Steve Jobs for this. If it were only for Tim Cook, apple wouldn't even know how to spell accessibility.
