mkl··on Apple's 512GB Mac Studio vanishes, a quiet acknowledgment of the RAM shortage
It's the RAM bandwidth that's the advantage, 300GB/s for M5 Pro. RAM in slots is way slower, ~50GB/s.

I'm trying to work out if I should buy a 48GB M4 Pro Mac Mini now, or wait for M5 Pro ones later this year. For AI/ML purposes, mostly. As far as I can tell, the new M5 MacBooks didn't go up much or any for the same amount of RAM?
mkl··on Warn about PyPy being unmaintained
Almost none of it will have been ported to CPython, as it's a completely different approach.

mkl··on MacBook Neo
Not iPads specifically, but digital devices. I did a show of hands poll in a big university course a couple of weeks ago, and 70-80% of students are writing their maths notes on a digital device. iPad is most popular, but Surface and other Windows devices are also popular, quite a few use Android (as do I for my lectures), and a tiny number use ReMarkable or other e-paper. Many students bring both a tablet and laptop to class, and I see handwritten notes viewed on non-handwriting laptops pretty often while they're writing other things on a tablet.

> we believe that mass domestic surveillance of Americans constitutes a violation of fundamental rights

Mass surveillance of people constitutes a violation of fundamental rights. The red line is in the wrong place.

The LICENSE file that refers to is missing. There's one in the python folder, but not for the rest of the code.
mkl··on Making Wolfram tech available as a foundation tool for LLM systems
Maxima, Axiom, SymPy, and many more CAS systems exist. They don't run Mathematica code, so if that's your goal they don't help.

mkl··on Ask HN: Have you ever cloned a cat?
Ah, I see. Well it's viable as people are doing it, but as well as being expensive it leads to multiple other cats needing homes: https://www.catster.com/weekly-mews/the-dark-side-of-cat-clo...

Seems best avoided.

mkl··on Ask HN: Have you ever cloned a cat?
I get missing a pet dearly. I don't get how the clone fixes anything. Replacing them with a clone that has no memories seems like declaring the memories and history mean nothing, and that to me is a strange betrayal of the lost relationship.

Grief is hard, but going back is impossible.

mkl··on Ask HN: Have you ever cloned a cat?
Maybe get a new cat and donate $60k to an animal shelter?

I guess the fact of such services existing and competing drives forward and funds genetics research, so from that point of view I'm glad they exist, but it seems like a strange way to spend so much money.

How are the annotations put into the markdown? Claude needs to be able to identify them as annotations and not parts of the plan.

"SWE-Bench Verified" is the name of the benchmark: https://dev.to/duplys/swe-bench-swe-bench-verified-benchmark.... Same with "HLE-Verified". It's nothing to do with third party testing. The citation you point to makes that clear.

Was, he said it a long time ago. He has said a lot of things that sounded kind of far-fetched and paranoid at the time, but which were later demonstrated to be true, so "Stallman was right" is reappraising the past statement.
