mkl··on I bought Friendster for $30k – Here's what I'm doing with it
Accelerometer, by putting the two phones together and shaking (some app used to do this, but I can't find it with a quick search). Edit: I might have been thinking of Bump, mentioned downthread, though it's a different physical mechanism: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bump_(application)

Camera, and point it at their changing screen (or both at the same scene at the same moment). Not too intrusive.

GPS, but that would require location permission. Intrusive.

Audio, but that would require allowing microphone. Intrusive.

mkl··on Sawe becomes first athlete to run a sub-two-hour marathon in a competitive race
Why not? People were not far from it and have been getting closer and closer to it for years. To me it seemed almost certain that it would happen this decade or next.
mkl··on Sawe becomes first athlete to run a sub-two-hour marathon in a competitive race
Two beat two hours is what they meant.

21.19km/h on average, or 17 seconds per hundred metres on average.
mkl··on Show HN: I've built a nice home server OS
It's immutable and you can't install packages, just docker containers.
mkl··on Google plans to invest up to $40B in Anthropic
No, Google's market cap is $4.1T, over 10 times $350B.
mkl··on Meta tells staff it will cut 10% of jobs
I can't find that exact quote, but the US navy had barges (made of concrete!) that made ice cream in World War 2, and those barges were unarmed so needed guarding: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_cream_barge
mkl··on Adobe Is Cooked
It's been open and free on Adobe's website for 20+ years, aside from proprietary extensions like XFA. It's the ISO standards that until recently required payment (as that's how ISO generally works).
mkl··on Adobe Is Cooked
It has been since 2008.
mkl··on M 7.4 earthquake – 100 km ENE of Miyako, Japan
In my experience (NZ) that means it was strong but distant.
mkl··on SPEAKE(a)R: Turn Speakers to Microphones for Fun and Profit [pdf] (2017)
It's pretty obvious if you did high school physics. I experimented with earphones as microphones as a teenager but couldn't get any meaningful audio data.

I think they're being downvoted because their comments all seem to have AI features.

mkl··on Claude Opus 4.7
That should be "research" and "straight" in the last sentence. Maybe that will improve it further?
mkl··on Lean proved this program correct; then I found a bug
We care only about a very small and narrow subset of possible programs, not any arbitrary one. It's possible to solve this kind of problem in large enough classes of program to be useful.
mkl··on Servo is now available on crates.io
The JS engine is SpiderMonkey, which is C++.
mkl··on Is math big or small?
Right, I immediately saw a torus - it was light blue (that's trivial to change, but I can't have no colour if it's visual) - but it could have been the size of a bacterium or the size of a galaxy. Without any context or application, the size is undefined.
mkl··on Is math big or small?
> When Illustrating a mathematical idea, the first thing you need to decide is the scale.

I have spent much of my life illustrating mathematical ideas, and scale is never the first thing I decide. Most commonly it stays abstract and there is no scale; it's flexible and I can zoom in and out at will. Sometimes I will choose a scale partway through or towards the end of an explanation, if I want to use a specific analogy, but I can comfortably rescale it to something else - the scale is never fixed.

Interesting to see such a different view.

mkl··on We've raised $17M to build what comes after Git
jacquesm did that impressively 9 years ago: https://jacquesmattheij.com/sorting-two-metric-tons-of-lego, https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14226889 (follow-up posts with more details: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14280569, https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14654223).

It doesn't solve the picking-up-off-the-floor problem.

mkl··on Many African families spend fortunes burying their dead
The USA system is hardly the only alternative.
mkl··on Native Americans had dice 12k years ago
That sounds like one very narrow cultural perspective.
mkl··on VOID: Video Object and Interaction Deletion
You missed the embedded video near the top.
mkl··on My Google Workspace account suspension
ZeroTier. It works well for me. I chose it over Tailscale because it doesn't require a third party for login.
mkl··on Why are we still using Markdown?
I say "heck" instead of "hell" all the time. I'm not religious, so the invented "heck" is more of a swearword.
mkl··on Automatic Textbook Formalization
That just shows the first post for most people. Here is all of it: https://xcancel.com/FabianGloeckle/status/204008278585190440...
mkl··on EmDash – A spiritual successor to WordPress that solves plugin security
Does Cloudflare use EmDash in production? Showing that its design and implementation have been refined through real-world use would help instil confidence.

It's for code though, not lists or bullet points.

mkl··on New Apple Silicon M4 and M5 HiDPI Limitation on 4K External Displays
That's what I'm pointing out. The person I replied to thinks it does: "I have personally refused to accept in the past that 27 inch 4k isn’t as bad as people say and got one myself only to regret buying it. Get the correct size and scaling and your life will be peaceful. I would recommend the same for Linux and Windows too tbh but people who game might be fine with other sizes and resolutions."
mkl··on New Apple Silicon M4 and M5 HiDPI Limitation on 4K External Displays
27" 4k is totally fine on Windows 11 (not a gamer). Everything is sharp at 150% scale.
