mkinsella··on Native style momentum scrolling to arrive in iOS5
Any idea if this will be ported into the typically gimped UIWebView?
mkinsella··on Apple's iCloud will automatically store, sync data for free
Keep in mind it's $29.95 per year. They did say you get "DRM-free" music through the service. But with an annual fee, will you have to continue to pay the fee to access your iTunes Matched music?
mkinsella··on Why F1 Steering Wheels Have Over 20 Buttons - And What They All Do
And as long as they are properly trained. None of us would be able to simply get into an F1 car and figure out what even half of these buttons do.
mkinsella··on PSN has been hacked again
The latest PSN update required a password change. They could have also added a required security question and then used that when resetting passwords.
mkinsella··on Sony: All personal data stolen from PSN
60 million users isn't "a few million"
mkinsella··on Phisher dupes Conde Nast out of $8 million with just one email
The Secret Service was originally created to investigate counterfeiting. While the role has mostly shifted focus to protecting the President, it still investigates financial crimes.

mkinsella··on Ultra high-speed broadband is coming to Kansas City, Kansas
Kansas City, Kansas makes up only a small part of the large Kansas City metro area. And, frankly, KCK is the least desirable area to live in (even with this new development).
mkinsella··on The Rolodex Logo Shock
Personally, I prefer the new one. It oozes strength and confidence -- definitely two traits you want in a shipping company.
mkinsella··on Anatomy of a Crushing
It isn't per month -- it's a one-time signup fee.
mkinsella··on Anatomy of a Crushing
Reverse-engineering is much more fun
mkinsella··on Anatomy of a Crushing
With the signup fee currently at $9.25 and a pricing scheme of

  fee = (number of users * $0.001)
that means there are currently approximately 9250 registered users. Who remembers calculus and can calculate how much revenue they have generated, assuming their signup fee started at $0.01?
mkinsella··on Amazon launches Prime instant videos, unlimited streaming for Prime subscribers
I assume they'll be pushing for more client apps first: Xbox 360, PS3, etc.
mkinsella··on Rent vs. Buy Visualization of Top 50 Cities
Having just moved to KCMO, I was very confused by this though happy that I'm renting
mkinsella··on Verizon iPhone 4
"On February 3rd our existing customers will have an opportunity to pre-order... on February 10th, everyone will be able to order online, in stores, or in Apple stores."

For once, a telecommunications company gives perks to existing customers. For far too long have cell phone and broadband companies pampered new customers with deals rather than existing customers (and rightly so but still frustrating).

mkinsella··on Facebook Now Allows You To “Download Your Information”
That's what people said about MySpace
mkinsella··on Start ups, please don't force me to log in with Facebook
How do you know 90% of your market has a Facebook account when 100% of your registered users are required to have a Facebook account? Don't allow your user base to be restricted by another user base.
mkinsella··on A Case Study of “Designed By Developers:” Stack Overflow
Keep in mind the author-icon/info-on-left concept isn't exclusive to phpBB, it's used by most forum software. It's used so frequently because it's what the user expects which is what drove this layout: making the site easier to use for first time users coming from Google.
mkinsella··on Arrington Gets an Anybot
I assume he's saying there isn't a licensing restriction to have as many users as you'd like. Meaning, the client doesn't have to buy the hardware product plus a per-seat license.
mkinsella··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring?
I'll be moving out to Kansas City next month and would love to work at a startup. Do you know of any that are hiring?
mkinsella··on IPhone OS 4.0 unveiled, adds multitasking, shipping this summer
Google Maps is clearly necessary on the iPhone but Google Search could be easily replaced with Bing.
mkinsella··on Typography on the iPad
Typography has always been a bit of a black art for me. In the end, I usually just settle on something that (I think) doesn't look terrible. Anyone have some basic and intermediate tutorials/guides, sites, and book recommendations?

Google's purchase of AdMob now looks like a great exit by AdMob and horrible purchase by Google
mkinsella··on Five Portland startups looking to hire developers and technical talent
Somewhat off-topic but this is the first time I've heard the phrase "Silicon Forest" and it's quite catchy! Silicon Florist is even better. Kudos from someone who appreciates a quality name but sucks at coming up with them.
mkinsella··on Google Maps: Which Highway is Which?
Completely useless article. If you're going to criticize something, present an interesting solution. Otherwise, stop trying to increase your hit count.

I do agree that the labels can be confusing and should probably be changed to the same way roads are handled: text perpendicular to the road, making it easy to distinguish.

mkinsella··on Garmin Connect team asked to relocate - this is how they declined
Thanks (to everyone) for the advice! You've definitely taken some of the stress out of it and I'm looking forward to the new experiences.
mkinsella··on Garmin Connect team asked to relocate - this is how they declined
Well this is certainly disheartening as I'll be moving to Kansas City in a few months with my girlfriend as she attends medical school... My job hunt begins soon and all I'm hearing is negativity about KC.
mkinsella··on Regular Expression Matching in the Wild
Great article. I've been interested in compilers since my college class and this scratches the itch.
mkinsella··on Twelve Months Notice
Especially relevant, as I'll be moving to Kansas City in July and have yet to start the process. Now that I'm only 4 months away, I'll probably tell my employer (a medium sized startup of 25ish employees) and get to applying!
mkinsella··on NBC's broken Olympic coverage
Because watching it on my computer isn't nearly as easy (stuttering, finding URLs, downloading players), convenient, relaxing, or high quality as sitting on my couch while watching an HD broadcast on my 50" LCD.
mkinsella··on Google's Super Bowl ad - video and instant analysis
Great ad with no bullshit that shows off the core of Google. It was funny, memorable, and different than the rest of the Super Bowl commercials.
