mkeblx··on TI releases Launchpad, a $4.30 (shipping included) microproccessor dev kit
There's an internal oscillator on the uC.

"32kHz crystal increases MSP430 MCUs’ integrated digitally controlled oscillator to real-time accuracy for various peripherals and timers"

But even running at 32kHz you can do real work, probably even run a MUMPS deployment.

mkeblx··on Slackware 13.1 Released
I have a not so computer literate family member who wants to see what this whole linux thing is about but don't know whether to suggest Ubuntu or Slackware? Thoughts or suggestions?
mkeblx··on For loops help - comp.lang.c
What percent of HN users could figure this out without using references? I've been .NET programming for 5+ years and couldn't figure it out giving it a few hours to try.
mkeblx··on Focus
Isn't the point larger than there are certain sites that are timesucks but that in general surfing the internet is counter productive? It's not about whether you are looking at HN, it's whether you're browsing aimlessly.

I have a question: what percent of the time is needed to be online or even just on a computer for doing all the pieces of a web software startup? I'd go with 20%, maybe less. And it would probably work better that way without a browser just a click away, ready to steal countless hours that would make the difference between making progress on a project and learning about HN members' workspaces.

(I have a theory that HN is really a devious ploy by pg to divert the attention of wannabe web entrepreneurs from getting stuff done so that his YCers don't have competition.)

mkeblx··on Ask HN: Moving balls to the wall on a fantastic idea?
First: what's the idea? It's kind of important to know in terms of giving feedback on how to proceed. Being terrified that someone will steal your idea is common but counter productive and most likely misinformed. Sharing your idea here might get you a partner or at some good specific feedback. Most people here are too busy with their own ideas they hold in high regard to try and take yours and run with it.
mkeblx··on A 2.5 Year-Old Has A First Encounter with An iPad
Whoa, I didn't know there were 500,000 apps in the app store. I would posit that there aren't even that many potentially different apps that are possible, even considering monkeys on typewriters with an infinite amount of time.
mkeblx··on Ask HN: Is short-term value creation ever justifiable over long-term?
See Any Rand, plus criticisms of.
mkeblx··on Ask HN: How viable is it for a programmer to switch to a DVORAK keyboard layout?
I just use the 0 and 1 keys and have my IDE convert to corresponding character every 8 keypresses. This way I don't have to move my fingers around at all and only need two fingers. It's a minor speedup and lets most of your fingers rest all day.
mkeblx··on The death of the URL
Although how to handle mailto: links is a browser setting, of course, you could have detected her IP and redirected her to GMail. That's probably why she was furious with you.

Does C# really deserve this treatment?
mkeblx··on Ask HN: Best code editor?
Notepad. It's a simple, feature-rich, light-weight editor. The learning curve is long and steep though, but well worth it. I've been using if for 3 years now and still don't know all it's bells and whistles. Best of all it comes preinstalled on a lot of OSs so you don't have to go through a laborious install process.
mkeblx··on How much does a university payroll system cost? $30 million, apparently.
And the $12m is just for the initial planning stage, no actual implementation, so the final cost will be much higher. But you get to amortize it over ~35 years.
mkeblx··on If you accept evolution, you must oppose over-regulation of the economy
I advocate over-regulation. It's not very hard: figure out the exact set of regulation you want, x, and then advocate x&y, where y is not the null set. Since the likelihood of x&y is logically less that of x alone you stand a better chance of getting x implemented.
