mkeblx··on Notes From the MIT Startup Bootcamp 2011
Drove up from NYC. As shown in your write-up there was a good diversity of startup experiences expressed which made it worthwhile. One thing that I noticed, probably particularly since it is a decision I am weighing heavily now, is the emphasis on being in the valley by most of the founders present. What do you think of that, as I saw you are planning on going to New Delhi?

I disagree with the sentiment of the puppies vs. dogs statement. It's perfectly reasonable to like startups as a class over larger companies for a long list of reasons.

mkeblx··on YC Office Hours at TC Disrupt [Live]
And that should be a softball question: why are you doing this startup over a multitude of others you could be doing?
mkeblx··on The Hackathon Never Sleeps
I'm there right now working on a new idea I came up with today, TaskTurtle. It's like TaskRabbit but for tasks that you don't need to get done anytime soon and want to spend far less on. Economy shipping vs overnight delivery. We match up people with tasks and the unemployed, elderly and homeless to do these task economically.

mkeblx··on Ask HN: Avoiding entrepreneurial development events ok?
Obviously before these type of meetups entrepreneurs were successful in creating companies so it's not a requirement. But there is a lot of value in getting out there and interacting with people, it's only networking for networking sake if that's how you approach it. A great time to talk about what you're doing is exactly before you have an actual viable product. Personally if I would have waited until everything was 'ready' I would have missed some critical connections. The risks are zero (well the reputation thing could be real, so have something to say), the potential reward is actually high.
mkeblx··on Interstate (YC S11) Plots Your Development Progress On The Map
I've been playing around with it for a week and I really like it so far, enough to transition everything over from Basecamp.

I really like that I'll be able to incorporate the development progress easily into an internal status page for our startup. (Actually thinking of doing a road-based metaphor visualization of the 'interstates'.)

I'm very hesitant to have a publicly visible progress page though, out of concern that would encourage people to wait to pay until a certain announced feature was in place. Would at least have to be handled carefully.

Thanks. Beta launch this summer.

Madison, WI - REMOTE

A new funded startup creating an easy to use electronic design webapp for the maker movement.

Passionate about making tools that simplify people's lives? We are looking for an all-around hacker, experienced with creating advanced frontend interfaces. Mainly would be doing a large amount of HTML5, Javascript+SVG (Raphael, custom), and using PHP, MySQL on the backend (Cake). Big bonus points if you have a hardware background: microcontrollers, designing PCBs, tearing things apart, and general familiarity with the Maker movement.

mkeblx··on [dead]
Do you expect to ever have to update it to No?
mkeblx··on Y Combinator Is Boot Camp for Startups
YC is a unique thing so any analogy will break down. The article did mention 'American Idol' which I thick is a lot closer, as A.I. has that same sense of people pinning their hope on getting in, the best talent winning out (in theory), constant all-around testing, competition, access to resources, and the large stakes for the players involved.
mkeblx··on Y Combinator Is Boot Camp for Startups
For a relatively brief piece on YC I think it was very accurate, capturing the significance of YC, the experience of the founders, and the general excited feeling all around that imbues YC. Obviously it's for a more general audience so probably contains nothing much new content-wise for HN readers but is interesting to see it all put together.

This is something I'll email my dad, who when I mentioned I mentioned I applied for an incubator asked "What do you need office space for?"

mkeblx··on ROME HTML5 demo
How does the running performance of WebGL compare to what would be possible if it was a native app? Are there inherent limitations of implementing this in the context of the web that will keep it much slower or will continuing optimization and things like hardware accelerated canvas elements allow achieving near parity (>80%) in performance?
mkeblx··on Ask HN: Anyone using Amazon's SES & if so are you liking it?
Is it feasible to call the script that authorizes an individual sending email address on demand? Or in a loop for every possible support-*@domain.com?
mkeblx··on Antifuse, the opposite of a fuse
I don't get why this is on the front page. It's just a normal fuse, except it works in the opposite manner. Now a standard fuse made of anti-matter...
mkeblx··on TechCrunch BCC Fail Reveal Emails of Everyone Who Applied to Disrupt Hackathon
Yes, but not just an idea. Assume each entry is scored with equal weight in terms of the business model, functionality, pitch and team. If functionality=0 (no working app) you may limit the maximum absolute score to 75, which may in fact be greater than any other entry. If it would advisable to purposely not make something that works would depend on the competition criteria.
mkeblx··on TechCrunch BCC Fail Reveal Emails of Everyone Who Applied to Disrupt Hackathon
I've heard teams have won hackathons with 0 lines of code, which makes sense to me. Biz model+mockups+presentation (and if it seems technologically feasible) should beat the neatest app.
mkeblx··on CoffeeScript: Accelerated JavaScript Development (PragProg book, now in beta)
I really want to try CoffeeScript out but am fairly comfortable with developing with plain JS (I say that now at least). One thing that would make me likely to jump in right now is if it will make development faster, caring less about the beauty of the code (Going from PHP to CS could be too jarring). Has it been your experience that it's more 'accelerated'?
mkeblx··on Schematic & PCB layout webapp for makers
This is a webapp I'm working on just for hardware hackers/makers. I've found the whole process of designing a circuit and getting a PCB produced a lot harder than it should be, especially for the broad group of people who are simply trying to get their project done.

I'm interested in those on HN who have some experience with projects integrating electronics what they think of the concept (albeit based on the currently very minimal description given)? Sign up for the private beta. Thanks.

mkeblx··on "It'll never work": a collection of failed predictions
Hence the "probably"'s.
mkeblx··on How to build an 8x8x8 LED cube
Really cool. I really want to play that 3D maze-like game.

The link says this was created in 2006/7. Have there been any advances since then in terms of resolution, or otherwise?

mkeblx··on Ask HN: What are the best technologies you've worked with this year?
three.js (https://github.com/mrdoob/three.js/) An easy to use wrapper for doing 3D graphics via JS using canvas, WebGL, and SVG renderers. Check out the cool demos. I'm betting 2011 will see a lot done with this and similar libraries.
mkeblx··on Staying Healthy and Sane At a Startup
Agreed. 7 miles at a moderate pace shouldn't get you too sweaty either, but you do lose time by most likely having to spend 5 minutes cooling down or cleaning up before actually sitting down at your desk.

Also helps to live in a city such as Madison, WI with tons of paved bike paths.

mkeblx··on [dead]
What kind of hardware hacking culture exists in the area currently? It is my perception (which is not to say right) of New Delhi as an software outsourcing center that doesn't do much hardware.
mkeblx··on Depression-era color photos
You beat me to it, except I think it's more HuffPo or Flipboard. Maybe looking at old photos can be used to find start-up ideas.
mkeblx··on Wipeout recreated with an RC car and lots of cardboard
Why joking? Powersliding is possible. Tape up the tires or otherwise reduce their frictional coefficient. See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TraYbBVRH4
mkeblx··on Ask HN: What are you working on today?
Just lost job today, possibly due to HN. Pondering whether to start job search or startup my business.
mkeblx··on Dropbox is hiring a Web Engineer
Yes, yes it is. It is similar to Apple looking for Antennae Engineers. It must be a sign that Dropbox is having issues with their web operations, and they are about to issue an open letter to their users.
mkeblx··on Just Do It: Move to Silicon Valley
Are there no eligible females in SV? Being a person more interested in finding a mate than the "predominantly male engineers 24/7 who are only talking about tech" wouldn't that put you at a comparative advantage to them with the females who do exist in SV?

I would think it might even be better than LA where being a developer or startup founder is not a asset in a movie fame and fortune mindset.

An idea: stay in LA and do a startup that manages/matches talent to managers. No business plan needed and doesn't need to even work past the "I can get you a deal/make you famous" intro.

mkeblx··on Future-Proofing Your Android App
What is this Android? I have never heard of it.
