mjsir911··on A New Future for Icanhazip
This kind of service is exactly what STUN servers are made for. Designed to be used with webrtc, but it works perfectly alright by itself.

There are a plethora of unauthenticated STUN servers around, and while there's still room for abuse, the protocol is a bit more lightweight than full-blown http requests, and faster, too!

I've dabbled with doing this on my own, but I've found `myip` to do the job nicely and without hassle:

> Out of the box, VIM has no easy way to colorize tabs.

From my vimrc:

    set list
    listchars=tab:>-
It's not colorizing, but will list out a tab character as `>---`

Not exactly sure what you mean by "show list" but I believe you can append to `listchars` whatever nonprintable character formatting you want

+1 on SiIvagunner (with a capital i!), the amount of variation they provide on a daily basis has quickly made them my go-to focus music.

A while back it was called ironcast! The rename confused me a bit

mjsir911··on X11 Universal File Opener and XDG Mess
Here's my attempt at solving the same kind of problem for just URIs, I try to defer to .mailcap for file based auto-opening.

Never had much luck with xdg-open

mjsir911··on How many x86 instructions are there? (2016)
From my fairly riced gentoo system:

  $ objdump -w -j .text --no-show-raw-insn -d /usr/lib64/firefox/firefox-bin | egrep '^ \*[0-9]+:' | awk '{print $2}' | sort | uniq | wc -l
  134
So actually, less!
mjsir911··on Urwid - Console user interface library for Python
The long list of optional dependencies listed on the page?

If I'm understanding correctly, these just provide additional niceties and is fully usable without them.

We're already most of the way there with SSTP, although it's a bit fiddly with SNI

Also the Christmas special of Black Mirror. It's about a police interrogation on a brain scan where you have less ethical issues getting in the way (arguably). A few other black mirror episodes touch on the same thing, but not nearly as much as this one.

Probably near my favorite black mirror episode for the sheer amount of dread it's caused me.

The video game SOMA touches on a similar topic of brain scans, "copying" your brain somewhere else (while leaving the old one still around) and general humanity-ness.

Its a horror game but I would absolutely recommend it as a bit of a descent into this stuff

mjsir911··on Paradox-free time travel is theoretically possible
Nothing changes in the past, including your arrival, because your arrival would have always happened. The past stays consistent because it was already determined to have happened.

How this would work going back in time to kill your toddler self is that, well, you don't. Gun jams, you have an aneurysm before you can, or maybe you killed the wrong toddler and there was just always a toddler killed in the past.

The fact that you are alive to go back in time means you were not killed in toddler form.

mjsir911··on An advent of code solution which takes seconds on Safari and minutes on Chrome
A friend ran into this for her solution in javascript, and the drastic speed up was replacing the javascript object with a `Map` object.

  const seen = new Map()
with `seen.set` and `seen.get` replacing `[]` runs the code in 5s on node on my machine
mjsir911··on A nameless hiker and the case the internet can’t crack
The article at least hints to the fact that MH was weary about digital evidence: "He asked Mostly Harmless if he could take a picture. Mostly Harmless hesitated but then agreed"

Are there better ways to slip into the void than going into the wilderness without even a phone?

mjsir911··on Garmin services and production go down after ransomware attack
I've actually done extensive work with reverse engineering garmin's bluetooth protocol for setting the time on my vivofit 3 watch without making an account!

It's mostly shambled together stuff but I have a wireshark plugin that works pretty good for the few pieces it supports

https://github.com/mjsir911/GarminBLE

I started this project with no bluetooth experience either, it's definitely been a lot of learning.

Let me know if you are interested in continuing / working on this, might give me a nudge to get back on it.

mjsir911··on Garmin services and production go down after ransomware attack
I was give a garmin vivofit 3 as a gift and was soured by the fact that I had to create an account and log in to set the time.

I've been very slowly working on a fork of gadgetbridge[1] to support the vivofit 3 for a while now and can successfuly set the time with no account!

mjsir911··on Show HN: Gitern is a Git host for hackers
This is really nice!

I wonder if some of the cli commands like create can be auto-executed on first git push.

Is this open source? Would love to hack onto it.

mjsir911··on Show HN: HNTerm – Browse Hacker News in the Terminal
That's nice! There are some other mentions about color themes, but I'm wondering if it could just respect my terminal's color theme with background & foreground colors?
mjsir911··on Setting up a home VPN server with WireGuard
I've ended up using softether for the sstp server support, and my only complaint with it is that it feels like a second-class citizen from the linux CLI.

Configuring it is a pain done through their `vpncmd` command which gives you a shell with custom commands (not very automatable/reproducable)

Logging is also stuck between logging to a file or sending it to a syslog port, which, with the rise of systemd, leaves it logging to nowhere that journald can access

It's a pretty solid piece of software, but it definitely feels like it was developed for windows GUI admins

mjsir911··on DigitalJs: Digital circuit simulator in browser
I used the yosys demo found in the readme to learn verilog alongside my computer science machine organization curriculum, and that was a blast! It's a wonderful little simulator and has plenty of examples for commonly taught logic circuits in university.
