mjcohen··on Show HN: If YouTube had actual channels
Regarding sound, if you are on a Mac you can use Audio Hijack to made the sound do anything you want.
mjcohen··on Keep uBlock Origin in Chrome for another year by enabling Enterprise policy
I use Brave everywhere and just ignore the ads stuff. Just use it as a browser.
mjcohen··on Twitter kills its San Francisco headquarters, will relocate to South Bay
Musk has been following his hero Trump in not paying those he owes money to. So now X stands for shmuck.
mjcohen··on Buster: Captcha Solver for Humans
There seems to be quite a business with small businesses being sued for violating the ADA. They can pay about $10,000 to make the lawsuit go away.
mjcohen··on Graunt and Statistics
Ah, yes. A Google search came up with it being the answer to problem 51 in his "The Canterbury Puzzles" on page 202. The link is https://books.google.com/books?id=ce5LDwAAQBAJ&pg=PA202&lpg=...
mjcohen··on Graunt and Statistics
I think I saw it used as part of an answer for a H. E. Dudeney puzzle.
mjcohen··on Scoped Propagators
The same thing seems to apply for Zoom background videos.
mjcohen··on New technology and old tactics have made buying a car a death march of deception
10% of $40,000 is quite significant (at least to me).
mjcohen··on Discovered June 16th, large asteroid to pass between Earth and moon on Saturday
The way I heard this is, at a military site, "No change in azimuth. No change in elevation. Let's get the hell out of here!"
mjcohen··on Free software hijacked Philip Hazel's life
I think that's a poor example because bridges wear out and need to be maintained. There are a number of Youtubers devoted to disasters (One is "Plainly Difficult") and bridge failures are a large component of their examples.
mjcohen··on Atkinson Dithering (2021)
Thanks. Low Tech Magazine is fascinating.
mjcohen··on Helen Keller on her life before self-consciousness (1908)
It might help her to take improv classes. You are almost forced to consider what your scene partner is feeling/thinking.
mjcohen··on Clever code is probably the worst code you could write (2023)
What if n is not a multiple of 4? There is a trick I can't recall at the moment for handling this with a case statement on n mod 4 at the end to wrap this up.
mjcohen··on New exponent functions that make SiLU and SoftMax 2x faster, at full accuracy
About 20 years ago, I was programming for the Hughes radar signal processor, a highly parallel pipelined machine which accounted for much of Hughes success in radar processing. Anyway, I needed to compute e^x for 0 < x < 1. The processor had a multiply, so I used four 256 long tables of e^x for each possible 8-bit values in the 4 blocks in the 32-bit word, multiplied them to get the final value. It was about 5 times as fast as the previous best e^x routine. That machine was fun! It is obsolete now, but for many years is could process radar signals faster that processors that were nominally many times faster.
mjcohen··on Why the CORDIC algorithm lives rent-free in my head
Years ago, I was programming in Ada and ran across a case where the value of a constant in a program differed from the same constant being converted at runtime. Took a while to track that one down.
mjcohen··on Cylindrical Slide Rules
I still have my small and large straight and circular slide rules.

In junior high, I was an enthusiastic member of the slide rule club (late 50's).

mjcohen··on Trailer Park Residents Are Forming Cooperatives
We have a good friend who lives in a trailer park where they own the trailers but not the land. The park was sold and the new owner is raising the rent incredibly quickly and there's nothing the residents can do about it. People want to leave but they can't sell because any new owner (of the trailer) will be charged greatly increased rent. Scum.
mjcohen··on A History of C Compilers – Part 1: Performance, Portability and Freedom
IIRC, it was a 53-pass compiler.
mjcohen··on System/360 – CHM Revolution
I did a lot of stuff on that machine. One was an interactive processor so users could write their own simple programs to do whatever they wanted. It had numeric and string accumulators and numeric and string operators.

One program I wrote for it could take text and convert it to pig latin.

IIRC, the processor was about 12,000 lines of 360 assembly language.

mjcohen··on Ask HN: What is the most useless project you have worked on?
I once worked on adding a feature to a radar processor. After a number of months and getting it working, it was cancelled. At least the checks didn't bounce.
mjcohen··on Xz: Can you spot the single character that disabled Linux landlock?
This may be naive, but it seems to me that a failed compile should generate an error worth worrying about.
mjcohen··on Is the Sun Conscious? (2021) [pdf]
Made me think of Star Maker by Olaf Stapledon.
mjcohen··on Canada faces a series of crises that will test it in the coming years, RCMP warn
One thing that I believe democracies have to beware of is Muslim immigrants forming isolated, self-contained communities that avoid connection with outsiders.

If that makes me an Islamaphobe, then so be it.

mjcohen··on Look, ma, no matrices
No. In n dimensions a cross product of n-1 n-vectors is the determinant with the top row being the basis elements (e_1, e_2, ..., e_n) and the next n-1 rows being the n-1 vectors. The result is a n-vector orthogonal to the n-1 vectors.

In 2 dimensions it is i j x y

In 3 dimensions it is

i j k x1 y1 z1 x2 y2 z2

And so on.

mjcohen··on The Era of 1-bit LLMs: ternary parameters for cost-effective computing
IIRC, Hamming's book "Digital Filters" (1989) has a section on FFTs with only the sign of the coefficient being used. It performed surprisingly well.
mjcohen··on I was infected with Zika to test a vaccine
based or biased?
mjcohen··on Floats Are Weird
A number of years back I was programming in ADA, a language I generally liked, and had a case where the compiled version of a floating point constant differed from the value generated when the same string was entered at run time. Evidently, the compiler and the run time used different routines to convert strings to floats.

The difference wasn't much, but it was there.

mjcohen··on Everything is a linear model
In the 70's in CS grad school at USC, I wrote an adaptive least squares cubic spline fit routine. Kept subdividing intervals and fitting a least squares cubic spline in each interval until a criteria was met.

Fun times.

Don't have the code or writeup any more.

mjcohen··on Nokia made too many phones
A google search for "keyboard with roller" brings up a lot of options.
mjcohen··on K Isn't Lisp (2004)
And you can use the system sort or gawk's internal sort to get them in order.
